  • I love you man.

  • One of the best boxers I look up to really. The best man in the game yes he is.

  • WOW MAN THIS VID IS 5 YEARS OLD.AND THAT KID SWEET PEA JUST MATURES LIKE A FINE WHISKY.WELL THATS WHAT WE SAY IN SCOTLAND.HE WAS 1 ONE OV MY FAVES.GREAT VID JOSE.

  • he didnt get hit much in his career so it must of been the drugs that have slurred his speech

  • who he likes?

  • Whitaker got robbed man times. Especially against Mexican boxers.

  • Pernell Whitaker is a bitch and Parnell you are NOT A FIGHTER you son of a bitch !!!!!!!

  • @36predator you don't know shit about boxing man. sorry.......

  • All he did in the Chavez fight was run! How do you win a fight running!?!? Pitty pat boxing should be left in the amatures. I'll give him this, he was very slick, but far from being GOAT.

A fight that I would have loved to have seen was Sweet Pea vs Meldrick Taylor; now that would've been something!

  • @polo81920 GFive me a break. Whitaker beat Chavez fair and square.

  • @SoulfulLova i think pernel barley one that fight though he landed a few more punches than chavez

  • @phillyshell94 But he won the fight though?

  • @SoulfulLova yea true but im mexican so its kinda hard to admit that he beat a legend like chavez but yes putting race aside pernel won

  • @phillyshell94 way to speak the truth, your the first true mexican, way to keep it real dude, cool shit

  • @polo81920 I agree with you pernell ran alot but he clearly outboxed chavez. Not to mention landing numerous flush shots on the iron chinned chavez. His style wasnt to fan friendly but if u stood there and slugged it out with chavez you'd look like meldrick taylor with swelling and facial fractures.

  • G.O.A.T

    H~

  • i dont care wut nobody say pernell is da best and he never lost 2 de la hoya, they cheated him and he never lost 2 chavez either

  • i dont care wut nobody say pernell is da best

  • Why does his voice sound so sluggish. Is he punch drunk?

  • A fight between him and Duran at 135 would have been one of the best ever.

  • @dhuang8 woulda been the best ever!!!!

  • If you take out the politics Pernell is one of the 20 greatest of all time.

  • Oscar De La Hoya won the fight and sweet pea had sour grapes and its too bad he was not a big draw he was a good fighter but its seems he never could win a big fight or be PPV king he talked too much and did alot of showboating but he could not stand toe to toe he just wiggled his way

  • Why does pernell sound like he from new york or something

  • is it just me or does he really Slur????

  • Hey ! How about Wilfredo Benitez ? He had great footwork and can fight of the ropes and beat you!

  • Bull crap Pernell was NEVER the best pound for pound fighter

It went Duran for most of the 70s and until the early 80s when he lost to

    Leonard until his 1st retirement

    then Pryor

    then Hagler

    then Leonard again

    then Chavez

Then Roy Jones Jr from 1994 until he went up to heavyweight in the 2000s

  • @tatertots00 nah arguello and pernell at some stage where the best fighters in the world

even if only for a week

  • @tatertots00 respect for having the knowledge to put pryor in there alot of so fans dont know who he is

the macho man was a great fighter for a period of time

  • @tatertots00 Chaves fought hand picked oponents, won fights on points he shouldn't have (biased/paid off judges) and had a referee who was on his site.

Not a pound for pound, plus he got beat by sweet pea though the judges didn't seem to agree with that ;)

  • @ANNABECKDK LOL Chavez fought EVERY single contender at 140 he hand picked NO ONE.

  • @tatertots00 Nah they were hand picked, plus was beat by sweet pea so sweet pea should be ranked higher.

  • @ANNABECKDK Name someone who he ducked?

  • @ANNABECKDK Chavez was still a great fighter, an all time legend. Yes he did fight a lot of nobodies but that's because he used them to tune up for the real fights. It was his form of training and staying sharp.

  • sounds like the interviewer may have taken a few too many shots to the head himself.

  • I'M 42 YEARS OLD!

  • my favorite boxer of all time forever!!!!! God bless you Pernell!~!!!

  • He's obviously drunk or stoned...or both.:P

  • i love pernell whitaker he's my 7th favorite fighter ever.

  • He's got the best footwork of any boxer I can think of. I feel like he even moves better than Ray Leonard. Anybody out there know someone who knows their way around around the ring better than ol' P-WIddy? I know Willie Pep had legendary footwork and Ray Robinson was legendary at everything, but what about somebody in the last 30-40 years whose fights are accessible?

  • Typical ghetto guy.

  • Thanks you, Sweet Pea. I pray you fine success outside the ring as you found during your career.

  • damn he slurring his speech. not my man !!!!! lmao.

  • one of the greatest fighters of our time

  • @ikarljoseph hell yeah.

  • He aint a damn legend. I could never stand this fucking prick. He was faking the supposed pain in his shoulder when he lost in four rounds to Carlos.

  • dude pernell ur the fuckin man, i love watching ur fights

  • one of the most underated fighters of all time.

  • zab aint shit hes all mouth now.

  • Perhaps THE greatest left handed fighter ever.

  • dam! whats a mess

  • @Chaz770 u hear the slurring in his speech.... damn!!!! i cant watch anymore

  • yes it is DEFAMATION of the highest order

He is a legend and known as one of the best ever even here in Dublin, btw Winky was robbed too - a black southpaw too

  • @ikarljoseph winky = garbage

  • wot a perfect defantion of the perfect boxer PERNELL WHITIKER

  • THIS MAN HAS GREAT DEFENSE WELL DID WTV

  • Pernell is high!

  • why are english and linguistic majors here criticizing a fighter? most guys are local guys who become successful in a sport and environment where the exchange of words wasn't the basis of their profession.

sure it would be nice for them to be more 'articulate' but hey...the man can feed his family. if that's what he's working with, damn...i accept as is. he's no more or less than i.

then you have people who speak for senseless word play...

people always find something to put you down.

  • @doctorsizzle ...lolol... yeah like 16 guys graded an English paper then decided to watch a video about fighters!

  • @doctorsizzle You might as well be a English major for such a beautiful comment, written 2 years ago ;)

  • This guy was probably the greatest welterweight in the last 30 years definitely top 5 of all time.

  • REAL TALK!

  • Im sure the crack didn t help.

  • sweet pea whatta legend! his heads been rattled tho. all boxers that have long careers get serious head injuries. its the cost of success. sucks tho. whit's only 42 in this vid and he don't sound like he's used to slurrin but whatev he's still the man. just a little tuff to see

  • @Abernier3 tbh he has always sounded pritty much like this , i though the same but watch his early interviews i watched one right after the olympics and he sounded the same as he does now

  • false.

  • Well said Sweet Pea !!!

  • I dont get how a defensive wizzard like Whitaker speaks slurry and George Foreman who got hit about 12 millon times flush on the chin still speaks perfect. George got to have a kranium casted in bronze.

  • George doesnt have a slur because he retired soon after the Ali fight..he retired very early..thats why he was able to reserve his health..he never took clean shots in his prime until the ALI fight..he was knocking everyone out before that within the first few rounds...Pernell actually had brawls and exchanges...sorta like Mickey Ward..they have a similar slurred speech.

  • He always had the slurr. It wasn't from boxing.

  • @Doderhultarn89

Didn't you watch the movie "Lean On Me", when the great Morgan Freeman says the following about crack: "It kills your brains cells, son. It kills your brain cells."

Sweat Pea is my favorite fighter of all time...

  • In the top 20 of all time.

  • Hey fellas', Pernell is not a Harvard graduate, but he's never been a gang-banger either. He was an UNDISPUTED FOUR TIME world champion and Olympic Gold medalist. Boxing historians believe that at his prime, Pernell was 'POUND FOR POUND" the greatest fighter in the world. Enough said.

  • Sweet Pea was a super nice fighter.

  • He was an undisputed lightweight champion. the titles he held at jr. welterweight, welterweight, and jr. middleweight were fragmented titles and no one... NO ONE is the pound4pound greatest fighter in the world.

  • pernell whitaker's gangsta

  • Whats going on with him now? I hear he got arrested for doing drugs or some shit.

  • it's sad when you see what boxing does to their speech. I can see it's starting to happen with Shane now.

  • sweet pea also had a lot of drug problems

  • nah thats just the drugs haha

  • what was his voice like before?

  • nah its the drugs, pernell hardly took any punches in his whole career

  • its not becuase of boxing hes talking like that the man never got hit hes just into alot of drugs and drinking startubg to get to him

  • i love pernell whitaker great defence man

  • thank you sweat pea for only caring who your fans think won.. FUCK JUDGES.. their fat pigs that sit on there asses...

This fan thinks you never lost a fight!!

much love. and RIP ARTURO GATTI.

  • His first loss should have been against Tito. The decision with Jose Luis Ramirez was bullshit and he beat Chavez easy. And I had Whitaker ahead of Oscar 7-5 on my card.

  • @dhuang8 No way you can give Whitaker 7 rounds against Oscar, I had Oscar win that fight by 1 pt after the knock down 7 rounds to 5.

  • @casasjohn2000 nah he whipped oscar. watch the fight again closely

  • @lubui2583 Sure did watch it, watch the punch landed count, Oscar outlands Pernell, I had the fight even going into the twelth and Pernell just did not punch in the final minute of that fight. Sorry man I am not biased but Oscar did just win this fight. Had Pernell won the last round I would have given him a 1 pt. decision. Giving Pernell 6 rounds in this fight would have been generous.

  • de la hoya won and sweet pea fought alot of taxi cab drivers this guy could not fill arenas not an exciting fighter to much show boat and likes to dance like a girl look at the de la hoya fight the way he was acting or was he or she I for one do not miss this guy out of sight out of mind

  • @dhuang8 his first lost should had come against jorge paez

  • Comment removed

  • This video makes me like him more. But he lost to DLH fair and square. The sad part is he could have easily won the fight if he was more serious. He wasn't robbed against DLH. Other than that good interview.

  • i dont care what nebody say pernell was never beat in his time he beat oscar too thank u sweet pea for all the great fights pernells da man

  • @TheCmackAttack jorge paez beat him but robbed him

  • @TheCmackAttack He sure did..!!!

    He won that fight!!!

    H~

  • he was a legend! too bad he got captured in louisana airway with 300g coke hes in prison now

  • that's how chavez , ramirez did to sweet pea lol he talked stupid now

  • datz watz up, my boy sweet pea a legend

  • My second fav after Hagler...top fighter and top bloke...what a great boxer should be i.e a inspiration to all...Thank you Sweet Pea...

  • never was knocked out fought everybody

  • No one could really beat this man, and in my opinion he was the hardest boxer to beat. The reason being is that he didn't go in there to brawl, he first study his opponents and then he calculated how to wear them down. He was boxing's mathmatician. That's why I respect fighters like him and the late Salvador Sanchez, because they were master tacticians who found ways to dismantled some truly heavy punchers.

  • i agree floyd and whitcker would have made a great fight . Of course when it come to skills.

  • Sweet Pea is good but he was just that a sweet Pea in boxing, he doesn't cross the line of the ultimate greats. Duran, Salvador Sanchez, Hagler, Hearns, Leonard, Pryor, Julian Jackson, Arguello, Wilfredo Gomez, Wifredo Benitez... These guys were the bastards of their day. Every guy I named could put Whitaker out with one punch. Julian Jackson had the best knockout ratio of his time, Leonard's combinations, Duran ferociousness, Benitez king of the sweet science and don't let me start on Pryor!

  • what you fail (maybe) to realize is that most of the fighters you named were heavier fighters than whitaker ,in his weight class (lightweight) he would outbox any of those guys.

  • One of the GOAT! Sweet Pea!

  • Chavez wouldnt have been able to handle Duran. He was a very good fighter but Duran's power was just to much.for a lot of fighter's and Chavez would have been one of them.

  • Drug's and age took whitaker out. But no one can dispute in his prime he was one of the best pfp fighter's ever. Trini woudn't have had a chance with whitaker in his prime. Period. One more thing, Ray leonard was also one of the greatest ever and no one could beat him in his prime other than duran and he was said to be on drug's the first fight. But ,man could he hit.

  • what about hagler. that fight was great.

  • .Hagler was one of the best brawler's ever. He also was a very good boxer. When i think of Hagler i would categorize him and duran as two of the best all out brawler's and there weren't many that could brawl with them. Box with them, yes, brawl...... no

  • Your mad in his prime Trinidad was unstoppable. Go back and check his fights especially against Yori Boy Campus. Yori was 50-1 with about 45 knockouts, he hit Felix with everything and the Felix hit back and that was the end of the fight. For you to make that comment shows your just a watcher of Boxing you never been in the ring. Anybody who has ever boxed would know that Pernell chances of winning would be slim because he would not want to engage Felix who was at his most powerful at that age!

  • Whitaker better than Duran, what the hell are you smoking. Sweet pea didn't have the skill or heart of Sugar Ray Leonard and Duran whup his ass in the first fight.

  • sweet pea didnt have the skill or heart.?when he was past his best he went twelve rounds with a prime tito trinidad with a broken jaw...he got off the canvas twice and was behind on points to knock out hurtado...,whitaker is one of the best fighter's in history..

  • Then you woke up.

  • i woke up?please inform me on anything that ive said that is false or untrue..

  • trinidad is the best ever,he always fought the best in boxing

  • not the time dude. Speaking of time. P was way past his best when he fought Trinidad. Greatest - PLEASE - The greatest win there big fights against other greats. Trinidad LOST when he fought great fighters. And no, he didn't beat DLH - That was some bull - youtube it and DEAL w/ it.

  • No one is debating that fight between Delahoya and Trinidad, but Delahoya lost mad fans after that fight because he was not willing to go all out even Delahoya said it himself, that is why he fought Ike Quartay aggressively. Trinidad though was a much more exciting fighter than Delahoya and Whitaker two fighters who rather look good that fight. Its Boxing not Tennis.

  • God he sounds retared, best welterweight, get real, have people forgot Sugar ray robinson, Wilfredo Benitez, Jose napoles, must I go on, please get real.

  • nona those guys woulda been able to hit him on his best day

  • A harder fight to beat at LW!? More talented!? The ducks and dodges look more talented, but it is a very flashy style of fighting, Duran could evade as well as the best of them and if you want to compare the power of both fighters? Well you cannot say that Whitaker was the harder hitter.

Could a past prime Pernell Whitaker step out of his weight class and perform as well against Hagler or Leonard? I love Pernell Whitaker, but prime vs prime I believe that Duran at lightweight is unbeatable.

  • When Whitaker fought a much bigger fighter in Felix Trinidad he was soundly beaten, albeit I cannot claim that it was a prime Pernell Whitaker. But if you look at Whitakers big fights, he beat Chavez, he beat DLH (even though the decision went against him), he beat Vasquez - but I do not believe that even Chavez or DLH are up there with Leonard or Haglers class.

  • He lost a decision to Esteban De Jesus at LW, I do believe.

  • Possibly the greatest Welterweight ever, I am a huge Whitaker fan. But best lightweight?! For me, it is definately Roberto Duran. I am very sure of that.

  • duran was a punchbag

  • De La Hoya fell from one of those "sissy" punches.

  • ha ha tito beat your ass

  • fuck this punk!! yeah according to him he was robbed against ramirez, chavez, and DLH, no way, he lost those fights , all he didi was throw some sissy punches, hugged, ran, cheated. Watch the end of his fights, he was actually running away!! even when he was the favorite vs Paez, he hugged like a girl in the last round!!! and vs DLH he ran the marathon.

  • ok that's why the cover of SI after the chavez fight was "Robbed"

  • By the way he's a hall of famer, 4-time world champ, former p4p king and ring magazine voted him as the best defensive fighter ever He WAS robbed against Ramirez the first timre but won the rematch by a wide margin so it doesn't really matter

  • you don't win fucking 4 world tittles running like a girl dumb ass idiot. you probably a pussy who don't even box. you obviously don't understand boxing. the object of the game is to hit and not get hit.

  • Wow! How can a defensive wizard like Whitaker be punch drunk and George Foreman still can speak clearly?

  • probably too much cocaine

  • Slurred speech. Sad. Like most of the greats.

  • I grew up watching Sweet Pea on HBO. He was the man

  • Pea one of the best ever

  • Damn he sounds ALL fucked up.

  • Sweet Pea is a true legend and I'm glad he made it into the Boxing Hall of Fame. He worked hard for it. I also love the fact that he always supports the up and coming boxers.

  • (LOL) i was going to name mhyy son pernell. but dehn sumthn happnd. lolz sorry so RANDOM rite ?

    uhm yeh

  • Pernell seems like he's been on the Cider. Haha! Had a defence that even Floyd Mayweather would envy. A true legend!

  • I doubt that!

  • What the fuck do you know!

    TWAT!

  • What ever!

  • bullshit ur boy floyd idolized sweet pea he's like Zab Judah a wannabe Pernell

  • haha yeah your dumbass is right!!

  • if you read about sweet pea on wikipedia it says he got arrested for possesion of cocaine, that sucks. well he gave us some great fights

  • Whitaker, from the time he made his debut up until now, has always sounded like this. His cocaine problems did not to him any favors, however. He took very little punishment in the ring because his defense was damn near immaculate.

  • it's punch drunk, not cocaine use. His sluggish facial mannerisms tell it all.

  • Listen to him.

  • ur on fucken smack,, how the fuck could duran have beaten pernell??? de la hoya had faster hands than duran and couldnt land a clean shot?? how the fuck could duran catch pernell??? maybe with a fucken fishing net

  • your a fucking retarded.... Duran fought SUGAR

RAY LEONARD!!! who was 2x better then DLH IN EVERY ASPECT OF HIS GAME.Learn some boxing before you open your mouth.Just because you have a major attribute doesnt mean you gonna win....SKILL WINS FIGHT...PERIOD.

  • Duran would have fuck him up, talking pernel

  • duran wouldnt have landed shit on pernel

  • effortlessly got out of the way of punches, shame he's had so many problems since he retired, love him though

  • My all time great.

Thank you for the great memory's.

If Chavez got humiliated how can Duran do it ? almost the same style.. and we all saw what happened when Leonard boxed him. "No Mas" :)

  • What a champion! True legend

  • i agree,,, pernell belongs with the all time greats :)

  • everyone talks about willie pep. this man is the greatest defensive genius ever. no one will ever match his defensive skills, "NO ONE". he was robbed countless times and always left it up to the fans. class act. miss him, i mean damn gave a young hungry trindad his hardest fight.

  • LOL at people talking mostly about his speech.

  • slur speech isn't an affect of cocain u dumbass unless u overdose and thats even a rare side affect. he never overdosed his slurred speech comes from punishment in the ring if u saw his fights u would know immediatly y he sounds like that. and that is y floyd mayweather is so defensive because there's life after boxing. its sad because whitaker is 42 in this interview

  • cocain doesn't give u slurs dumbass unless u had a overdose and that is a rare side affect of an overdose. pernell never had an overdose that slur is from punishment in the ring. have u seen his fights he took so many punches because he doesn't stop fighting he shows heart but thats why floyd mayweather is so defensive because there's life after boxing pernell is 42years old in this interview. floyd doesn't wanna end up like that.

  • Pernell Whitaker was one of the greatest of all times. it's too bad he was hooked on coke. he was robbed from chavez, de la hoya. he either drunk here or brain damage from cocaine. sweet pea never got hit inside the ring. he is the legend in defensive boxing no doubt!

  • hopefull he was just drunk during this interview, and doesn't have any long standing health problems. He really was one of the greatest ever, and probably would have beaten Ray Leonard at welter and Duran at lightweight.

  • Duran would have beat his ass.
