@AssociationAdmirer True but everything must have its start somewhere. It is upon these original efforts of the sixties things have improved. People then were more into a band’s look than into a band’s lip-synching. Today of course both impressions being perfected take the highest priority. In those days screaming girls drowned out a lot of the music anyway to the point where it was hard to tell if the band was lip-synching or not -- it was actually a nostalgic, neat effect!
An instant hit in 1965. It was released around the same time Lou Christie came out with his hit single "Lightning Strikes".
In those days "singles" were available on 45 RPM black-vinyl discs called "records".
Record companies also released larger recordings that held numerous songs on huge 331/3 RPM black-vinyl discs called "albums".
Of course you needed a "record player" having a “turntable” that was adjustable to the two speeds if you wished to play both records and albums on the same player.
Am composing emails about my daughters wedding and including links to music to listen to as they are read! This one came to mind and I loved seeing the Hugh Grant Style in the Outsiders lead singer! Great tune has held up well = At least for me! Rock ON Great Smiles included!
First of all, love the song, great bass line, brass, lead guitar, melody, etc., I really think it's held up well. The semi-live performance is much preferable to many 60's lip-sinc performances. Check out the Stones doing Brown Sugar on Top of the Pops for an awesome example - it actually rocks harder than the single!
As mentioned earlier, this is a vocal performance to the instumental backing track. The only people mic'ed are the lead, bass player, and guitarist playing the Gretch. This was another typical TV performance method, other than a total live performance or a totally lip-sync'ed (pre-recorded) performance. Most performances on TV wouldn't sound exact to the released version because studio recordings & mastering mixdowns utilize specific equilization and special effects (echo, flanging, etc.).
I don't know how many times I have watched this video and just now noticed all the upturned furniture - what a hoot; pretty clever pop culture representation going on there.
I believe that's Sonny Geraci doing the vocals. Tom King, the lead guitarist, formed this group under the original name of Tom King and the Starfires. If you're as old as I am, 54, and a native to NE Ohio.. You would remember a very famous local TV celebrity who would place a goatee on and play some very odd Sci-Fi movies on Friday night. His stage name was Ghoulardi (Ernie Anderson) and was a Cleveland 60's legend. Ernie used the Starfires song "Stronger than dirt" as his opening them song.
I LOVE THIS SONG! WHAT'S UP WITH THE CLOTHING FLYING INSIDE THE ROOM?? THIS SONG HAS SUCH A CATCHY SOUND TO IT...GETS STUCK IN MY HEAD FOR HOURS! HOW COULD ANYONE NOT LIKE IT?
The drummer in this video is Jim Fox, Heights High grad, who later started The James Gang with Mr. Guitar (Eagles member Joe Walsh) & Bassist Dale Peters.
