Sereni's voice, by his own admission, wasn't as big as those of Warren, Merrill or MacNeil. But it was certainly strong and beautiful, with fine top tones. Corelli is predictably splendid here; he and Sereni play off one another very effectively:) --
@ivansperanza How can you make a comment like that....what the hell do you call it then? If it's not a fucking C, what do they call it where you live?
I tried to reply to pasfresh123 but the account is closed, so here is my reply anyway:
1. I can't hear Sereni "yelling." On the contrary, he seems to sing with a smaller voice here than usual.
2. It is a victory cry, Don Carlo/Corelli sings "Liberta" (freedom). Victory over tyranny. Of course, those who don't know the value of freedom because they have always had it will not understand.
Why is Sereni yelling so much? Disappointing. I love him in other stuff. The high C at the end: it's strange to make such a powerful "victorious" assertion at the end of a friendship duet. It would be more appropriate for a feeling like victory over an enemy, etc.
I know it sounds stupid but ever since I heard Corelli's interpolated high C at the end of this duet all other renditions seem somehow 'incomplete' without that note. Just strange feeling I get. Anyways that man could sing!
Exactly right about Corelli's voice; the combination of vocal power, brilliance, and dark center, and the vulnerability he brought to the vocal color is unique. He could use this to very effectively portray heros who are self-doubting, in conflict emotionally with the action they have determined is necessary, who act with conviction but little hope.
There are actually a couple of recordings with him in that part! I had never heard anything from that live but indeed it seems to have been one of these stupendously unforgettable opera nights. Sereni is quite fantastic too!
Gracias por subir algo más del Maestro Franco Corelli, pese a que el audio no es óptimo,Vale como Registro Histórico y Bello Recuerdo.Gracias otra vez Gtelloz!-¡¡¡BRAVO POR SIEMPRE MAESTRO FRANCO CORELLI!!!

How about those of us who have never had freedom, we still don't get why Corelli spoils this wonderful duet!

Because the word is "Liberta" -- "freedom": sublimated cry from a character who understand the value of freedom because he lives under a tyranny.

COOL! I never thought of it until I saw this, but what a great Don Carlos Corelli would have made!
