  • The guy is a P*R*O*F*E*S*S*I*O*N*A*L M*U*S*I*C*I*A*N - and most likely....YOU ARE NOT. So, stop with crybaby "I call bullshit" comments, just bc you're too stupid & LAZY to fuck with your own setup and get it right doesn't mean he's wrong! WTF??!! Why the fuck is Youtube filled with smartass whiners on every fucking video post?? Im beginning to think this is a reflection of society as a whole...pathetic

  • Its like a B bender on every string.

  • Wish he was using something other than regular slinkies.... maybe light top/heavy bottom for the average player

  • 0:22 sorry i couldnt help myself...

  • $300 Fender Strat, I've never heard of such a thing......where can I get one that cheap?

  • @nudnik1123 The twilight zone

  • just an angled claw and ur unmodified strat will stay perfectly intune?? im calling bs on that theres got to be some locking tuners or oil on the nut

  • @destructocaster BS on a strat staying in tune with moderate tremolo use? It's not like he's dive bombing left and right. If you set up a strat right, it can stay in tune just fine, assuming you don't go too crazy. Also, oiling the nut should be standard practice for EVERY guitar unless it has a graphite nut or the like. >.>

  • @rjg7000 im just saying that all it was is just to adjust the claw? i never knew this was possible, i bought a $300 super-vee locking tremolo just for tuning stablility and after seeing this i question my own exsistance

  • @destructocaster Well, I wouldn't say tuning stability is accomplished by adjusting the claw alone. And nowhere was it claimed that it was the only important factor. The entire setup of the guitar plays a role in the tuning stability. Setting your guitar up right can be the difference between your guitar always being in tune and your guitar falling out of tune just by looking at it funny.

  • @rjg7000 i had a fender style tremolo on my guitar before the super-vee, i used everything on it and tuning was always a problem even after the cheap whammy bar broke and the bridge was useless. my baby stays in tune better than ever but i just think that this guy got lucky with his guitar

  • @destructocaster I'm glad you found something that works for you, but isn't it just as possible that you got *unlucky* with your guitar? All I'm saying is that I've seen and played many strats that stayed in tune really well without any aftermarket additions. It's very possible you just had a bad set up on yours. Just saying, don't be surprised if you see lots of vids and play lots of strats that stay in tune well. It's not as uncommon as people think.

  • @rjg7000 or a tusq xl! good point.

  • How can his string tension equal the spring tension if the bridge is not sitting perfectly parallel with the body? If his bridge has the ability to pull up then his string tension must be more than his spring tension; it is pulling the bridge off the body.

  • Ha Ha, why does this guy endorse super vee tremola units

  • this is crapola, in the first place this guy doesn't do his own guitar, he has a tech guy, in the second place the string and spring tension is not that sensitive but has to be balanced accordingly to achieve this, the tension is distributed evenly across the claw, as long as it comes to a zero or neutral position your in bussiness

  • @vox1003

How do you know he doesn't know how to set up his own guitar?

  • you should let Lance and Josh know about this.

They never taught me any of this

  • what about dive bombs?

  • no Carl, THANK YOU!

  • this guy is a monster player

  • A VERY IMPORTANT DETAIL ABOUT KEEPING YOUR AXE IN TUNE WHEN USING A WHAMMY BAR IS EXPLAINEd BY SCOTT HENDERSON

    watch?v=Sm_VSjadCiU (from 11:20 on)

  • @markushalfmad Scott is right on about that, but there is alot more vairables involved

  • Just set my strat up with the angled claw, and got the height to make those intervals. Seems to hold its tune very well, even through ridiculous divebombs.

  • Will I ever be this good at guitar?

  • wow, seems to work!

  • probably used from a pawn shop or something so he can prove his point , sure pickups will run us 200-300+ dollars for single coils for all three but if companies buy in bulk like 1000 say seymour duncans they get a discount

never knew this "rule" applied to stratocaster bridge because if a floyd rose isn't you're going to have problems.. but it doesnt hurt to have locking nuts or locking tuners, heavier gauge strings mean better tuning stabillity but less speed as well.

  • All hail the beautiful Fender Stratocaster.

  • Comment removed

  • Now having yard sale... all music equipment must go... dammit

  • that's the nicest tex mex strat I've ever seen

  • @rippinshifter seriously. and those pickups are seymour duncans.

  • @jmuci haha, unless the rest of the guitar was free, it sure as hell isn't a 300 dollar guitar because those pickups run about that alone.

  • I first learned this angled claw trem trick from the Star Trek episode "The Changeling", where Nomad was seeking out "perfect" life forms. Jackson ROY Kirk was the inventor.

  • I don't see how he could ever feel naked considering his home-grown pelt... look at those arms!!! He's a great player, though, & some of his hints here really helped me out. ;)

  • carl trem block is not flexible

  • Nice! Too bad he doesn't mention anything about the 6 screws on the front (which have influence on the stability) or how to get a smooth playing tremolo ARM; that it's not too loose or too tight and not have any slack.

  • Put the claw at a weird angle... and WARP your neck... It wasn't a surpirse he used a cheap guitar instead of a expensive one.

  • If you actually PLAY the guitar (I.E. bend strings), you will not get away with this. Even the whole angled claw thing is crap, check out GreenAsJade's video.

  • hit 8 over and over: sustaaaain

  • the proof that you don't need 5000 dollar equipm.

  • @stoofbuis im sure that deluxe reverb over there cost 300 too... -____-

any guitar on a good amp souns good.

expensie guitar on a cheap amps sounds like shit

  • Tremolo bar is located on the high E string side......does that mean it only operates the higher pitch strings and not the lower ones? Thats a silly a theory....sounds like bullshit to me.

  • I just got in 2 strats in the last week and have never actually set up any guitar let alone a strat. I had wondered how to do this and i found your video discussing the very topic. I have been very lazy for the last 46 years of playing guitar but thought i might as well get off my butt and learn how to do these simple tasks. Thanks. now to find some more along same lines .

  • Great stuff Carl. This worked like a champ on my Partscaster with a 6 screw KWS bridge. Thanks

  • @gam515 Did what he said (he's right) ; It works. Thank You,Thank You, Thank You.

  • Lots of comments here on the setup of guitars. Hes obviously doing alot of vibrato stuff here on a stock fender vibrato and staying in tune fairly well. If its working for him and he has a system that he beleives in i can see in this video lots of proof that this guy uses a vibrato system alot. What works well for a floyd rose with 9's on it for deep divebombs and giant pullups has no bearing on what works for this 6 screw tremolo system.

  • i have a flyod rose. why do i find in very hard to do fast tremolo picking? even that my guitar is in starndard tuning, the strings feel very loose. why???????????//

  • I've tried what this guy says and I can tell you that you can't play your strat properly if you don't watch this video

  • a really useful vid, thanks! any other good ones?

  • You're so full of S**t Karl. adjusting the claw means nothing for tuning stability. Each string has its own tension for a certain pitch, yes? when you achieve this balance, and you raise or lower the whammy bar, you are adding force negative of positive to the strings. Now, the ammount of force you add is pretty much the same, whether you have an angled claw or not. All you are doing, is changing the maximum distance the bridge rotates, hence changing the max or minimum change in pitch

  • good tips and they work but theres something technically wrong with what he says. 1. The spring tension will not equal the string tension because the string coming off the saddle will be at an angle, hence there will be less. 2. each string requires a certain tension to reach a certain pitch. Therefore, angling the springs in the back will not change the tuning stability or change how much the pitch will change per unit force on the trem bar. only increase the distance bridge will move

  • can you do those guitar screams using this as well?

  • it works, thanks

  • u man r epic at doing this stuff

  • this guy is really good

  • Comment removed

  • so what i have to do is only agjust the screw? will this change the calibration or something? im really a newbie in this. Thanks for the video.

  • Hey I use 11,15,19,33,43,53 strings.. would that make a difference using thicker strings.. I tried this setup and I'm finding that I have to use 4 springs instead of three in the back. Can I still make it work with 3 springs while having strings that are thicker than .009s or .010s?

  • Comment removed

  • OK just to start would someone guide me? should i De-tune my strat & then open backplate & loosen / Tighten those three strings & then re-tune? Do i have to perform intonation as well?

  • That boy good. He should be in my band Sexual Chocolate.

  • @MELLSBAD Your comments a reference to coming to america with Eddie Murphy, LOL

  • Excellent instruction; thanks for the pointers and sharing your knowledge Carl. Gonna tweak my axes based on this new info...

  • danm he makes me wanna get a strat!!!

  • How come nobody mentioned this guy's serious talent. He plays awesome and its a rather good demonstration of the use of pull ups in music. Awesome licks right there :-D

    TFK

  • @TFKofBD Yeah his demo had me staring at the screen in amazement. His harp harmonics were lovely.

  • Carl Verheyen must have missed his physics lessons!

  • wang bar XD

  • Harmonics ala Eric Johnson buddy..!

  • @sensational1982 lenny breau DUDE

  • Brilliant!

  • Ankgled claw is bullshit myth

  • how do you adjust the tension on the springs?

  • @lowisao On the back Carl showed you that "claw." Well there are screws through the claw parallel to the body. Screw those in or out; a long Phillips head screwdriver will help. This changes the angle of the arm which in turn changes how much "up whammy" you allow - if you like Carl's idea there. You might also have to adjust the screws holding the whammy down.

  • @ChordBender thx man, i did it, but it was a bad idea.... i can't seem to tune my guitar like this... even without using whammy bar....

  • @lowisao Google "half-step stop” This sort of thing makes tuning easy. Otherwise floating" (up AND down) whammies are a pistol to tune.

  • string and spring XD

  • This system working only if you don't push up the (for example) the "G" string on the fingerboard. If you do, will be goes out of the tune....

I use US standard strat w/ graphite saddles and nut, and locking tuners but doesn't help.... G string is the big problem...)))

  • wang bar why does that sounds so wrong for me

  • My Schecter Omen 6 Doesn't have one but i use my finger

  • @SimanGtr75 Check the nut. I believe Carl missed this part due to the fact that he is not a luthier nor a tech. A well cut nut is a must for any guitar, tremolo or not. Bone and Graphtech are really the only good nuts besides roller and locking. Saddles have to be stable as well.

  • $300, not where i come from.

  • As said before, it's just the way fender guitars are setup from the factory (it's maybe wrong with physics ... but the fact is the method IS working from the dawn of stratocaster time) it works fine BUT i believe it's impossible to get that setup right if you go with a wounded G string : YOU HAVE TO USE A PLAIN G STRING or you'll never get a minor third on the G and the pitch will be higher on B and high E

  • i feel naked when i play the guitar naked.

  • @dpb77 I feel akward when you play the guitar naked.. O_o ..

  • Carl Verheyen apparently know nothing about basic physics!

  • I followed this setup and it twisted the neck on my strat. Nice.

  • @365Avalon sue him!

  • @365Avalon

Send the smug fucker the bill!

  • @365Avalon how is that possible? Did you have a real Fender Strat or a Squier?

  • @kynoceph Fender

  • @365Avalon I would really get in touch with Fender about that. I don't think skewing the trem claw works, but it absolutely should not have twisted the neck of your guitar. That's a manufacturing fault.

  • @kynoceph The problem is that it only happened when I followed this setup. It was even visible to the eye. Looking down the low E side of the neck looked perfect, just the right amount of relief. Looking down the high E side had no relief at all. You could see the twist. A bad piece of wood perhaps, but I think it shows uneven tension following this setup.

  • "Wang bar"? xD

  • Make no mistake folks, you MUST have a well cut nut. Some of the best to use a re a very well cut and slick bone nut, a GraphTech TremNut or TUSQ (synthetic bone), or a roller nut (Wilkinson or LSR). GraphTech nuts are the easiest for those with limited access to tools. Tuners and strings trees mean a lot as wells as there can be binding. Lastly, the saddles must be free from grooves and the thicker steel block helps as the strings sit down further to the back. After, you will be good to go!

  • Hey Carl, what amp and effects are you using. The combination sounds great!

    Thanks, Danny

    dlrdanny

  • @dlrdanny it looks like hes using either a deluxe or a twin with some reverb and delay to me

  • @NintendoSinceBirth1

    Thanks! Cool!

    Danny

  • that bridge doent looke like a floyd rose...why can he pull it up?..i think typical stratocasters have whammys that can only be pushed down...

  • @Codsrock Like he said, it's setup as a floating tremolo. When they "float", you can pull them either way. When it's set flat against the body, you can only drop the pitch. Lighter spring tension allows the block to lift off the body from relatively higher string tension. Jeff Beck really owns this setup and style of playing the trem as Carl acknowledged as well.

  • This guy never took a Statics class...Isaac Newton would kick his ass!

  • how do i make the whammy bar stay where it is like he has his, mine just falls down?

  • @Huntman1394 just tighten it, swivel it around a few times into the hole and it will grip it

  • @Huntman1394 Does yours have the little tension spring inside the threaded hole? It has to have that to hold it in position. Tighten the arm until it stops, then back off one turn until it's in playing position, and the tension spring will hold it in place.

  • incredible so simple and so good . without shit exotic expensive hardware

thanks for this lesson : )

  • Overall balance of spring to string tension needs to be achieved on any floating system to achieve any given tuning. Imbalance of this is not caused by a given tremolo pitch. Pinching nuts and string strings, worn tuners and worn mounting studs are to blame for tuning stability issues.

  • haha 'wang bar'. Very nice. I too feel naked without a tremolo bar in hand.

  • @samosurfer74 i found the problem. the bridge screws were too loose so once i tightened them and reset the spring tension to match the string tension i was good to go. thanks anyway

  • @samosurfer74 i'm using 10 gauge strings. fender pure nickels. the tremolo bar end is really close to the body and it touches it if I push on the whammy bar. I have the correct intervals and it doesn't go out of tune. I tried tightening the screws to increase the spring tension but I can't get the intervals right and it goes out of tune. I'll try adding springs

  • This I have GOT to try! The whammy on my Deluxe Players Strat has always felt overly stiff and un-useable.

  • i did it and it works just fine. the tuning remains intact, but the thing is my bridge is way too high. like almost 1cm above the body. is there anything i can do?

  • @doomey89 add one more spring onto the back of the bridge. If you already have them all installed then try screwing the springs in further/ increasing the spring tension! What gauge strings do you use?

  • I imagine that using 11-12 gauge strings can be compensated by adjusting the claw back to increase tension........yeah?

  • @samosurfer74 I would also adjust the neck/truss rod for such a gage of strings. I normally use an Ibanez, because the ibanez trem bridge dives 20x a fender whammy, just a matter of preference. Anyways, putting stronger springs for thicker strings would also put a lot of pressure on your neck/truss rod. However, you break one string on a guitar with a whammy, and you take 40 minutes to 1 hour to change it and get it in tune again.... not a very nice scene in a concert. Done in 2 min on a fix br

  • @wanttowatch80 Thanks for reminding me about the truss rod! However, breaking a string on classic strat "vibrato" bridge does not need 40 mins. to replace. When you restring all the other strings retune where they were. I always have a second guitar as back up while a friend restrings the 1st! That usually takes 1-2 songs to complete.

  • @samosurfer74 OK i was talking of my Ibanez bridge. Maybe it's not a vibrato bridge and a floating Floyd Rose Type bridge.... that takes time

  • Master teach me the ways!

  • This is utter nonsense and should be taken down.

Go to the gear page and HRI for a full explanation of why.

  • @ajpeagle well it clearly works so why is it nonsense

  • @Fiarzen

    Did you read ?

It doesn't work , you can't affect the spread of the tension to match individual strings or adjust relative pitch shift on a six screw strat trem without altering the action or intonation.

  • @ajpeagle

You should be more specific with what actually "does not work" about this way of setting up a guitar. Clearly it is set up exactly the way he wants it to be and it is in tune with the benefit of the set bend up range with the tremolo.

Keep in mind that Carl has over 45 years of experience, is a gear/tech head, toured with Supertramp, is a fantastic studio musician, his intonation is flawless and subsequently his info is echoed in the fender site.

The proof is in the vid anyway lmao.

  • @ajpeagle Man I've checked out your page and all you ever do on youtube is find a video and talk shit about it. What's the point man? Is your life so compromised with pure hell and hatred that you must pretend to be some keyboard man behind the monitor "know it all"? Just let people do what makes them happy if it isn't causing any bodily harm to you and relax. Try to have some fun yourself without being an ass. Thanks for the time it took to read this though I'm sure you'll ignore the "message".

  • @9timesnine karl is full of shit in this video, and I don't like people who are full of shit. If you like people who are full of shit, then go kiss them and suck the shit out of their mouths. You're just scared of any confrontation, as implied by your response. Yes the world is full of love and happiness but it is also full of evil, ugliness, pain, suffering. If you are denying that then you are yourself a pussy and ignorant.

  • @porlino87 You put a lot of effort into your comments just to promote anger and hate for what purpose? Its redicullous. I aint going to pursuade you to be "more peaceful", if you're a hateful old bastard then that dont really bother me none as I dont have to hear from or see you evryday. If you wanna hate....then hate. Its all good. Later. -Cody Lee Meece

  • @9timesnine I'm not trying to promote anger. I'm trying to promote how full of shit Karl is, and I don't like people who claim to know what their talking about.

And as for you, you are scared of angry people, and you are probably a coward that always avoids confrontation. Welcome to the real world pinocchio

  • @porlino87 Alright man. Cool. Do what you do but you look like a hatemongerin douchebag just for "trying to promote how full of shit Karl is". Who cares? Nearly every great guitar slinger since the dawn of time has had some crazy and rediculous way that they say does "this" or "that" for thier tone. It is what it is man. No need in ragin on youtube to save people from crazy trial and error methods for thier guitar's playabillty. Make sense?

  • Comment removed

  • @9timesnine Lmao. Try not to be TOO serious man. It causes people not to take you seriously at all. Later days man. Peace. -Cody Lee Meece by they way I just wasted more of your time.

  • @porlino87

You are saying that Karl is full of shit but also hate people who claim to know what they're talking about (forgive me for knowing the difference between their and they're)???

Think about what you just said before your next therapy session....

  • @ThieleM I hate people who are full of shit and claim to know what they are talking about. in this case, angling the claw has nothing to do with tuning stability or the "intervals" as Karl puts it. Experiment with it yourself and you will see what I mean. Also check out the response video, he proves it as well. The "spring tension must equal string tension" argument stupid too. This will be the case with any set up. If this was not the case there would be a net force and acceleration.

  • @porlino87

You need to chill out dude

If you have a floating trem bar and want stability in tuning your spring tension and string tension MUST match...that is simple high school physics and applies to suspension bridges and a lot of other similar structures.

Carl doesn't say that the intervals are an aid in tuning stability...he is saying that is how it works for him. I don't angle the claw myself, I use the /I\ pattern, which I would contend is better but angling does work.

    now chill

  • Comment removed

  • @ThieleM @ThieleM response continued....

Think about it. Each string requires a certain tension to achieve a certain pitch. Once tuned up, this tension will be equal to the average tension asserted by the floating bridge. Raising and lowering the whammy bar adds tension to either the "string side" or the "spring side". But either way, tension will be distributed evenly to the springs. The angled claw has no effect here, try it yourself.

    See this

    youtube.com/watch?v=O0Oyc6slYRc

  • @ThieleM the /|\ pattern also has no effect on tuning stability. It's only effect is to slightly increase tension without tightening screws.

    again, watch the response video

    youtube.com/watch?v=5Jz4IkQraN4&feature=watch_response and this youtube.com/watch?v=O0Oyc6slYRc

  • @ThieleM he also doesn't mention what type of strings he uses, Fender super bullets are the best for wammies, unfortunatly if you bust a string your fucked, you have to replace the whole set, tried to replace the b string with a regular string and what a difference

  • @vox1003

I hate super bullets, if the wrap is good you are fine. Jeff Beck, Guthrie Govan and plenty of other guys who use non locking terms use other sting makers and have no problems.

Carl uses Dean Markley Helix strings.

  • @ThieleM super bullets are not great strings, but because of the end of the string they will keep you in better tune, I am a tool and die maker by trade, and I will tell you that sometimes the hole after the small ball of a DMar string, sometimes it is drilled out too large, which makes the string get lodged in the lip, which kind of holds it there until U shake the Wammie and un lodge it, this is what I found out on my own, but these guys you just mentiontioned don't do there own tech work

  • @vox1003

I don't really care if you are a toolmaker. Guys like I listed before get stability that is just as good as bullet users so your appeal to authority fails since the actual evidence shows that you are not correct in your assertion

  • @vox1003

Also just because they have techs doesn't mean they can't do their own work. I saw Carl set up a strat at GIT during a seminar...it went from a mess to just like he describes here. No tech needed.

  • 300$ guitar w/ Seymour Duncans???

  • does it matter the gauge of strings???

  • @mf2304 Yeah, heavier gauge strings bring more tension to the bridge. It will make your bridge come up more so you will need to adjust your claw a bit tighter if you are going from light strings to a heavier gauge.

  • the CLAAAAWWW

    lol.

    carl your awesome

  • Great tip - now I gotta get the strat on the workbench and set it up like this.

  • They stay in tune right, if you look how the CS sets them from factory. The claw setting is not a big deal and not necessary if you string and tune right. My old guitar teacher (70's) showed me so many decades ago how to keep it in tune, he was also a dealer way back into the Leo days and said they came this way. This is nothing new. Everyone who used the trem, set if for that float. It's certainly not his idea.

  • I had some slight up-bend on my mexi strat.. just removed one of the springs (got two springs in now!) and with a bit of adjusting, I've made those interval bends possible and so far, it's holding its tuning pretty well! Hopefully it'll continue this way without any problems! :D

  • i just did this to my mexi strat with the standard trem, it worked! haha its pretty cool, i have to adjust the action now and do a little bit of setting up but the bar is so responsive and fun to use, this is an awesome video.

  • whang bar! lolz its whammy bar

  • ha ha hahahahahaha he said wang bar!!

  • I think i meet this in redding ca. At a blues jam. Its funny im just surfing through the guitar stuff and i see him think he looks formiluar and i remeber he told em he playes allot in la

  • does he mean that when he pulls the whammy bar all the up he gets those intervals?

  • @tehwasabiking Toy Story :)

  • genius!

  • this guy is so much fun

  • This works great IF you are on acid!

  • @tehwasabiking toy story

  • Can't wait to see Carl Verheyen and Haddon Cord Live next month!

  • that was awsome!

  • It's hard to say hmhmh

  • i used to have my strats hardtailed but when i saw this i went and tryed it and IT REALLY WORKS!!!!!!!! this is my new teqnique for strats. i highly recommend this more than getting a floyd rose, Super-Vee, etc. i have one word DAAAMMMMNNNN!!! lol. but seriously TRY IT !!!!

  • hey do u install these in that little hole in the right side of the bridge i have a hole in the side of my Ashton Stratocaster bridge (its a Fender copy made by ashton with 4 pickups) i need a whammy bar how much are they???
