I have read a few recent comments & I agree--I posted re: another TT song & I see that I didn't do my math correctly, for I was listening to TT when I was 19 (26 yrs. ago)--& yes, their music hits home & straight to the heart. The ambience, lyrics & soul take us away to emotions that cannot be described, only experienced. Thank you for enlightening more to TalkTalk's music, and thank you, You Tube.
Man, I really needed some god-damned support today - which was evidently absent, (as usual, when you really need it). Support is that which lets you know that you're not alone - at times when you feel completely frigging deserted by ALL.
Religious books simply don't give me that mental support I need - not even the over-rated fucking bible.
But fuck me, after 5 mins 22 seconds, I once again KNOW there's someone there for me, no matter what... his initial are MH
A completely unique voice and a unique band - Hollis's retirement is as big a waste as I have ever known. I remember David Gahan from Depeche Mode being quoted as saying that The Colour Of Spring was his favourite album of the 80s - well, it's one of my favourite albums of more than just the 80s. Sublime.
One of the better cover artworks...perfectly fitting for Talk Talk-Showing the goose who laid the golden egg with a noose around its neck-a good analogy to Mark Hollis and EMI-and the relationship between commerce and Art which Hollis obviously struggled with. Mark Hollis could stun you by singing the phone book. He was never meant to be famous-and to be fair, EMI did back talk talk, -nearly bankrupting them in process to create albums as sublime/influential as Spirit of Eden & Laughing Stock.
@fetishalchemy OBJECTION! Laughing Stock came out for Verve Records, Talk Talk were sacked by EMI after they took their sweet (and precious) time recording Spirit of Eden and the label released a single without the band's permission (they only allowed EMI to take one single from Spirit).
@6MDMaster6 Well, I have two versions of Laughing Stock and neither of them mentions the Verve record labels name anywhere-they are as far as I know the original issue on vinyl and CD respectively(polydor-whose logo is clearly on both copies released these in 1991-the year I bought them. Not sure what copy you have but you are right that Verve is the label that reissued it. Sure its not the re-issue?
Keith Aspden got TT released from EMI and got TT at 2 album deal with Polydor, Laughing Stock is the first and Mark Hollis solo album is the 2. if i'm not mistaken.
"fetishalchemy" - "Mark Hollis could stun you by singing the phone book." Haa! Well said! That's what I love about MH: not just that inimitable voice, but his minimal unpretentious lyrics. He conveys the kind of immeasurable lyrical depth & enduring emotion through such frigging simple lines (like: "every trial you'll give... enough enough, not all... " or: "Enough, ain't it enough... ") that someone like bono could never dream of conveying by singing something as long as... errr, a phone book.
Mark's lyrics are sometimes vague & open to interpretation... but that's what makes them so unique. You kind of have to listen with your heart since they won't always make sense to your head. I've always said MH doesn't so much communicate as he facilitates: the music takes you someWHERE instead of telling you someTHING. Doesn't really answer your question, but hope it helps. Cheers.
Wow good explanation, this how MH songs feels, I dont even understand so much the words he says, its the feeling that he'll make in U, feelingmusick...Talk Talk is the bet the 80's have brought on music, always listen to them when im on inernet, while working, What is MH doing now acctualy I've heard he retired?
If EMI had backed TalkTalk then who knows maybe they would have been on of the biggest bands in the world, i'm not sure that would suit Mark Hollis though!
IMHO above all, MH is human. It is precisely this quality that infuses his voice and lyrics with that fragile vulnerability that still somehow touches on the divine. His voice expresses what so many of us can't quite put into words....
sweet god....... this is not music - this is further than mere music can't even begin to put into words the overwhelming dimension of this song. Words aren't good enough to describe the indescribable. This is beyond words. This song, this band.... and that sacred unparalleled voice.
Everything else in the world disappears next to this, it simply doesn't matter, nothing matters.... at incomprehensibly difficult times in my life, god wasn't there for me.... this man was.
@JohnoEAL I understand you SO much right now. I am grieving the recent death of someone very close to me and i know You DO have an idea how much this music means at such a time as this. You put the words in your comment so well!
I love to hear you sing In every style you give Sometimes I'll touch the right Finally you tried Such pressure you cannot bring In every trial you'll give Enough, enough, not all Finally you'll fall I love to hear you sing Along, along, along the crowd Finally you've found
b-sides are sometimes priceless like this little gem and 'getting late' pure quality..thanks for posting..oh yes, and its my favourite too, for close friends no longer here, McGuinness, Mam, always loved..
besides... just see how this music get´s people to express and communicate in a convenient way, compared to all the other stuff on tube and the way that ppl are placing comments.
This song has me in tears everytime I listen to it...this was my dads favourite song by Talk Talk. I think of my dad everytime I hear this. R.I.P Dad.
Oh, I love this song. I love the whole Spirit Of Eden album, too. This band was so brilliant. I will not say that they were short lived... I will say that they were amazing while they lasted. This is something amazing that I would love to cover.
This song makes me visualize driving in Miami Beach on an old convertible on a cool crisp night....so soooooothing so peaceful so hypnotic!!THX 4 posting it!
