..response is unplanned and also the dancer "answering" back the guitarist with her zapateado. He "twists and turns" the sound of the guitar and she immediately catches on with her footwork, which seemed completely unplanned.
I LOVE Flamenco and have watched many a 100 vidz of it but a lot of dances seem to be choreographed to such extent that it´s take the "soul", surprise, improvision and feel of the dance. This one, I keep coming back to, because it seems so unplanned and natural. Even the sitting dancers seem to be awstruck, focused and surprised by how she "develops" the dance. And you can tell their response is...
5. Those little shoulder shakes or jerks she does and then clicks her fingers...only a natural dancer, someone who FEELS the dance, does that sort of "quirky" moves because they´re so into it.
6. The way she "wakes up" the ladies clapping in the background with her "zapateado" and clapping after 5:37: AMAZING control of her surrounding!
7. At 2:44, she´s glancing into the distance and seems completely oblivious of her audience. Seems so genuine and focused.
..to be in tune with the feelings you get from the song/music.
3. A lot of dancers seem to think "the faster, the more skilfull" but no. When you dance slowly, like this lady, it´s more difficult because you have to be razor sharp in your details or else, every little flaw will be visible.
4. 1:24, 6:29 the way she looks upwards in pain (and almost questioning) and then claps violently...very spiritual and even religious. Wonderful because it could be interpreted in various ways!
I keep coming back to this vid because there are so many things worth watching and FEELING in it.
1. The way this is a pretty "quiet" dance which gladly puts emphasis on the sound of her shoes and the slow, almost sneaky, guitarsound which accelerates extremely well with her "mood".
2. A true dancer couldn´t care less about the way they look or happen to make faces when they´re feeling the dance. She seems to be completely in her own world and THAT is true Flamenco to me: to be in tune...
This is amazing, the connection between dancer, musicians and palmas, the way they cheer her and the way she dictates where they're going is amazing. BRAVO!!!
tiene gracia y buena tecnica, pero es monota y con esos ojos de cordero desgollao que pone y cara de suplicio parece que fuera un tormento lo que baila...
The lady and the dance, beautiful absolutely beautiful. Flamenco one of the most beautiful, elegant, and soulful dance in the world. I'm very happy I accidently came to this post, thank you @InLacrime.
@IX19UT8O: add passionate to my description of this dance. I'm a latin ballroom dancer and I've always been fascinated by the flamenco music, the dance, and the dancers especially the ladies. This one especially, you can feel the passion in her movements and expresssions. I'm in love.
Grace, style, passion, this dancer has it all. Absolutely beautiful dance and definately one of my favourites. I intend looking for more of her dances. The guitarist was teriffic too.
..if she´s searching above. Very spiritual! I can totally relate to that. She looks upwards several times!
Also, she doesn´t care about her facial expressions....I mean, if it looks bad or nice. That´s very good. And you can tell from her movements, that she seems to be turning herself almost inside out. That´s how intense it gets for her! Which is one aspect of Flamenco that I just love! They´re not afraid to express the hurt, pain etc.
From 4:50 and on it´s so insanely good that I just...."jawdropping". And then after 5:28, the way she seems to effect everything around, from the claps of her mates to the guitar. SHE is the one who sort of wakes them up to accelerate their claps and makes the guitar player play faster and more intense!
The way she looks up to the sky at 5:54 and various other times. With a pain and question in her eyes. And 6:09 to about 6:35....wow! If you notice, she also claps upwards almost as if...
..feelings, and to immerse yourself so deep into it that you start to tell a story through every movement.
So to make it short, ha ha, dancing done with the soul is so completely different from all other kinds of dance. Both for the dancer and for the audience. I sometimes feel like crying or overwhelmed when dancing and that, I think, is good.
I´ll keep coming back to this vid just like I´ve done so many times, it´s SO AMAZING! So much to learn from it. Thank you ever so much for sharing!
..the following times among others, 1:23 and 2:44. That is soul! That is something that cannot be learnt, cannot be taught or faked.
To me, it seems like she´s not even there in that room anymore. Look at how distant her eyes look there. Like she´s completely in that moment of her life, that made her feel like that. The variety of expressions on her face...frustration, softness, sadness and anger. She´s got that very vital quality for true dance: to be able to tap into your feelings.....
True dancing, according to me....the kind that sweeps people off their feet and they don´t understand how they could be captivated when the dancing actually was being done by somebody else.....is done with the soul. If the soul is in it, in the dance....the body will follow automatically.
It´s not 1,2,3 or any counting. Dancing is to be done internally first, then externally. Otherwise, it is just mere movement of the limbs. One has to become the guitar, the drum, the flute etc.
@cornemusa sorry, but it's not "latin" this is from Spain which is in Europe...unless you mean "latin" in the broad sense of the term...but that would include Italy, Portugal and France too...
@thekingofmoney2000 "Latin" culture is of European origin: originating on the banks of the Tiber River in Italy near Rome. I usually use the descriptive "Latin" in the broad sense of the term, encompassing all of the European Latin cultures and those transported to the Americas by Spanish, Portugueses (and, yes, even French) colonization.
@cornemusa You willfully forget however that the Phoenicians, present day Syria, Palestine, Lebanon and Jordan, are the originators of mediteranean culture and that even the continent "Europe" was named after a Phoenician princess from one of their myths. So the 'Arab' line in Flamenco runs back to the beginning of times.
@yamejanakaratoprak It depends on how far back we wish to trace the origins of any given culture. Let's go back 20,000 years to the migrations from Central Asia into far western Asia (Europe) to see where we, who claim European ancestry, really came from.
Regarding flamenco, or any other cultural expression, one has to define some pertinent or manageable point of origin or else just say that everything began in eastern Africa, the homeland of homo sapiens. Fair enough?
@cornemusa No need to go all that far back, my dear man; I for one dont believe that we descend from the apes for that matter. It was just to point out the obvious ethnocentrism of your remark as everything being 'latin' and flamenco in particular. I think its safe to agree that there has always been an 'arab' influence in flamenco and a very historically evident one, assignable with 700/800 years of Moorish presence in Spain during the period of AlAndalus.
Had Olive Oyl only learnt Flamenco, she is good, very good, she makes herself beautiful with her moves, Im keeping this as a favorite... Magnificent is a better word to describe her JuneJune...
Carlos Sanchez todavia magnifico guitarrista ! como siempre!.. You really have kept it going Carlos as always! magnifico ..!
Love it how it accelerates. Just like love: first it´s kind of sneaking, then it quietly takes you over, then you feel it with full emotions, then it threatens to end, and then you desperately fight to keep it, until the end when you get enough and everything crashes down.
The dancer is "La Tempestad" & the guitarist is Carlos Sanchez. The performance was done in the traditional style of Flamenco...completely improvised.
It's really amazing how she expresses such strengh and beauty through her moves and facial expressions! I wish I were her! Those deep eyes... could seduce even the coldest man on earth! To have such power... wow... increadible!
me encanta este baile. es maravilloso, tambien tengo lagrimas en mis ojos si lo veo. yo tambien queria bailar tan magnifico como la mujer, pero no se bailar ningun tipo de flamenco...
