I wasn't offered the choice, since I was still paying off the loan. I owed $5860, they valued it at $4000. Because I had gap insurance, the entire balance was covered...but there was no option to purchase offered. I think it would have a "Salvage" title then, which I don't know much about.
@DebGod It all depends on where you live, in my state a "Salvage" title means nothing other than telling the owners the car was once claimed a complete write off. Some states will require an inspection of the vehicle after repairs, but that's usually it. I have a friend who bought a 1991 Saturn from a dealership after it was "totaled" after a hail storm, it has a salvage title, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with the car other than a bunch of dents.

Cars cost an insane amount to repair. But if it drives right, could you just do a really cheap ugly repair?
