Live in Decatur, GA like 15 minutes from Downtown Atlanta. These bad storms always get on 20 and head east . I cant stand that because I live pretty much near I-20 and Wesley Chapel Road. I remember we were in the basement when this hit. Scared the mess out of all of us. THANK GOD NO ONE WAS KILLED!
Good video of home. My parents got that baseball sized hail, and they lived very close to I-20 at the time. I lived further down Hwy 5 and we only got quarter sized hail there.
That is the warning system of Douglas county, Georgia. They were installed after a tornado struck Douglasville in 1991. The siren you can hear blaring in Mike's video was located at the intersection of Chapel Hill road and Douglas boulevard...just south of I-20 (where Mike and his chase partner were filming).
Is this the one that hit the city and took out alot of the windows and stuff? I remember something like that a few months ago, they had to shut down some roads due to falling glass.
Hey Mike, every time I pass over the Chapel Hill road bridge, I think of that wild Saturday afternoon and your video. I'm still amazed my SUV didn't get trashed; several neighbors had vehicle damage (broken windows, dents); several also forced to re-roof their homes due to leaks caused by that large hail.
Yes, I have a total of 90 dents in my car from this storm, ranging in size from quarters to baseballs. I also had to have my front windshield replaced. That's all part of storm chasing, and most chasers never have the dents repaired since they will just get more of them the next day, or the next week.
It was very near my home....video was shot from the Chapel Hill road bridge (exit #36) over interstate 20 just south of Douglasville, Georgia (just east of Arbor Place mall)....Mike and his chase partner were shooting west toward Ga. highway 5 (exit #34).
Osama, you did not understand my comments. there where alot of people on the road who did not listen to the weather reports and many who do not even care, they are only concerned about the shopping they are doing. Thats what I meant.
fiddle-dee-dee...we got the same shit in Alpharetta, it was amazing...you can see it at my house, just type into search my username. it's the one called hellstorm. probably a little over-exaggerated on my part.
Its amazing how many idiots kept driving during these storms and fast i might add.. how stupid, what dumb asses...they should not have even been on the road.
I agree whb1965. I've been tracking and documenting severe storms in the field for a long time, and I am continually amazed at how oblivious a lot of drivers are to what is happening around them. I've seen people driving at or above the speed limit in large hail and about 200 yards from a large tornado, and they seem to not even know or care that it is there. I'm not quite sure what is going on in their heads when they do that.
It never ceases to boggle the freaking mind are how whacked people's priorities are & how brainless they can be - Some of them even call themselves storm chasers(ala "TVN").
'NO LIFEGUARD IN THE GENE POOL!' LOL. I like that! I agree, there are a lot of people out there who have no business at all anywhere near a severe storm, let alone chasing it! So far I don't think a "storm chaser" has been killed while actively chasing a storm. I do know of a couple that have lost control of their vehicles and died on the way home from a chase. With all the chasers and tour groups out there these days we will see some storm chasing related deaths in the future.
I remember that. I was standing outside walking my dog, and a piece of hail, the size of a golf ball, hit me in the middle of my forehead. Me and my dog starting running to the house, and a piece of hail hit him in the eye, and nearly knocked it out. My dog is blind in 1 eye now, and I have a little bump on my forehead :'(
I was turning off at exit 36 & chapel hill road when I saw the hail and then the tornado. People were on the overpass with their camcorders. That was one hell of a tornado.
That's where we shot the video, so that was probably us who you saw. I was driving a red Pontiac Vibe. It wasn't quite a tornado, but rather an impressive wall cloud.
It looked so big I thought it was a tornado. But like you said, it was an impressive cloud. And I did notice your car. I was driving a black Kia Sorrento.
Thanks Perry. I wonder if very many people in north Georgia realize just how incredibly lucky they are? This particular storm could have easily produced a tornado that would have ripped through Douglasville as well as the south side of Atlanta and the worlds busiest airport. Also, earlier in the day had the northwest GA EF3 killer tornado tracked a little farther south it would have hit Cedartown, Rockmart and the north ATL suburbs.
There were a few baseballs mixed in with mainly marble and golfball hail. I have two baseball-sized dents in my car to prove it. The hail was also what's known as "soft" hail, and it tended to explode like a snowball when it struck. Also, the fact that we had slowed down a lot helped preserve the windshield. I've been in baseball sized hail numerous times over the past 20 years, and there has been no time that I have had a windshield smashed. Very lucky I guess.
Are you all still Chasing?

c'mon dude, where do you think a giant semi is going to park, Under a huge freaking tarp
Also some people are storm chasers and get paid money to do this stuff
Also this part of Georgia hasnt seen weather like that in years. I bet most people assumed it would be just a little rain and left it at that.

Great video Mike! That bridge is only about one mile south of my home, and I can verify hail of that size fell in Douglasville.

that didn't look like baseball hail, if it was baseball, your windshield would have been smashed.

yes, very lucky, every video I saw with a storm chaser in the middle of baseball hail, their windshield would basically "cave in!"
