  • Hey thanks for your tips since i have discovered your videos you have helped me a lot, now i average 8-10 points on my middle school team (I try not to be a ball hog ) and you guys have helped me improve my game all around

    Thanks

  • Why does the ball have to be infront of the eye?

  • @onemogain23 Imagine aiming a pistol or rifle. If you hold the weapon out and off your shoulder you have no sight line to line up the shot. With the ball in front of your shooting eye you have a much better reference for the shot. Eye + ball + target = SCORE!

  • @ShotScience (please respond) Hi Chase i have a little problem everytime i shoot my thumb gets in my way. What should i do??

  • @goldenhawk33 Which thumb? You must mean the Assist Hand Thumb. If that is the case you need to spend a lot of time getting rid of this because it really screws up your accuracy. One way to do this is to shoot with that thumb pinching your index finger. It may take a week or two to get this working for you.

  • @ShotScience Thank you . By the way do you have some sort of video that will help?

  • @goldenhawk33 There is a video on the ASSIST Hand in our play list. Check it out.

  • (please respond) Hey Mr. Chase, when you showed the L-set point from the 3 views, i noticed from the rear view your arm was a little tilted. Is that right, or was it supposed to be exactly straight?

  • @451Hman The elbow is allowed to be a little outward, but too much and you get a really flat shot.

  • For some reason, at 1:12 when I have my arm straight like that my hand is facing left and i can't get it straight without putting my elbow out. What should I do?

  • @xTheLampMasterx "PRACTICE UNTIL IT BECOMES A MATTER OF muscle memory!

  • @ShotScience

Should the ball be released by the thumb and the forefinger?

  • @mxftw15 No! The ball should be released off the first and second fingers for the best control.

  • My jumpshot are usually off target like hitting the side of the grim ? And air ball for long shot ? Am I release wrong ? Help

  • @thanhnguyen2011 If you go to our play list you will find several videos entitled "Interactive Basketball Shooting." Review these and you will the answers to your questions.

  • When shooting free throws should I jump? I am 5'10" and I just can't seem to make my darn free throws. We lost a game by 1 because I missed them.

  • @TJames2269 The biggest question is why did you miss them??? Were you short, right left or long? This will help us to help you.

  • @TJames2269 BTW, there is no problem with your feet coming off the floor on your free throws.

  • @shotscience

Hey, so what do you see when having the ball in the set point? Example: do you see ball already in the goal? Is the ball above the goal? Is your wrist just to the right of the rim (of you're right-handed)? Thanks.

  • @koolgordon Please take a look at our "Interactive Shooting Videos" for the answers to your questions about the Set Point. There are several that show this and also talk about problems with your shot and how to fix them.

  • Are you suppose to raise your elbow when you shoot or are you suppose to snap your wrist back.

  • @bu9 The answers to your questions are in this video and other of our shooting videos. Check them out!

  • Guys nice videos you uploaded!!

I seem to be having a problem with my shooting though....I've seen your shooting videos and they have helped..but i don't seem to be getting most of my shots into the basket...can you suggest some solution for this???

  • @dmnkllr22 Our "FORM SHOOTING DRILL!" This is the way to perfect your stroke!! Start today!

  • @ShotScience Any chances that you could send me or upload another video to help others like me ???!!!

  • @dmnkllr22 this is the only video we have for the Set Point and do not plan another for sometime. Sorry!

  • i can't seem to able to keep my set point infront of my eye and tend to raise my set point higher and seems like a pull back when shooting with defender infront of me how do i solve this.

  • @YeoWeiXiong It sounds like you have an idea of what is wrong with your shot and you can fix it if you spend the time. We recommend that you use our video "Get PERFECT Shooting Form Drill" to help you get this doen.

  • @ShotScience Hey shot science, what do you mean the ball should be in front of the shooting eye, not shoulder? Should my hand be in front of right eye (im a righty) when I shoot? I have the ball in front of shoulder when I shoot. Does this mean I should change my shot and if so how should I redevelop my shot. Thanks

  • @YeoWeiXiong The set point for your shot should look like this: Eye - ball - target. If you shoot off the shoulder, which a lot of players do, your accuracy will probably not be very good. Think about aiming a pistol!

  • @ShotScience so when i raise to my set point i must see my L shape and ball at the same time?

  • @YeoWeiXiong Yeo, go back and review this video and it should help you figure out the answer to your question.

  • shot science, for years ive been having this same problem. Overall I feel like my strength is shooting, but am EXTREMELY inconsistent.I attribute this to the minor side spin to the right (im a righty), but cant figure out why. I've tinkered with my "flop", ebow, and guide hand. I feel like i do everything im supposed to do with my shot, but cant figure out what is causing the sidespin on my shot. PLEASE HELP.

  • @aws5361 Send a video today!

  • did chase just said "Guide Hand"?

  • @ISonbabball He Did!!!!! and he was reprimanded immediately!

  • If I were to place the ball in front of my shooting eye, I'd have dislocated my shoulder. What happens when I shoot right handed but aim left eyed? I think a few of us out there are like this.

  • @EyJuchiro If you were to go to our videos and watch our shooter they all have the ball in front of their shooting eyes and there are no shoulder problems. Right handers need to have the ball in front of the right eye and vice versa on the left handers.

  • Hello shotscience, i was wondering if you can answer my question! Well, it is cause i am having problems shooting in game times. While i am doing nothing but shooting, i seem to be able to make most of my shots but when in a game, i always hit the brick. Please help me :(

  • @whysoown shot science has a video on this called make in practice miss in games

  • do shooting sleeves work? in ur opinion

  • @ccostain for me yeah. I use it on my left arm though, not the arm I take jump shots with

  • Why is it that some people can't maintain the set point when shooting a three pointer?

  • @TheKobe24Jordan23 They are looking for more power from the arms and shoulders rather than relying on their leg power.

  • @ShotScience randon question is it true you get a higher arc on your shot if you start shooting as you bring the ball up and if its true does it mean by the time the ball is at ur set point you should be releasing it?

  • @lakersshowbarber24 The higher arc is not the result of when you release it, but where and how you release it. Release the ball with your shooting elbow higher than your eyes for a good arc. Also, on your finish or Flop of the wrist DO NOT pull down on your arm as this will make the ball short of the target. See our video " Get PERFECT Shooting Arc" for a better understanding of how to achieve the proper arc.

  • @ShotScience so you mean like when you release the ball your arm should elvate and it should be higher than eye level so that means not bringing the ball up higher than eye level then releasing it?

  • @lakersshowbarber24 The elbow should be higher than your eye level at the completion of your stroke. Your Set Point, or the location of the ball just prior to your shot should be located above and in line with your shooting eye.

  • @ShotScience thnks i remmeber that i just forgot to realease off the index and middle fingers

  • @lakersshowbarber24 OK, lets get ti going now!

  • @ShotScience yeep

  • @lakersshowbarber24 Ditto, yeep!

  • @ShottScience Elevate the ball upward so that you can see the basket under your shooting thumb and do this without ducking lower to get a look.

  • @ShottScience There is space, but it appears to be in contact with the palm.

  • @ShottScience Nope!

  • @ShottScience They are not down loadable at this time.

  • @ShottScience Sorry, we do not make any recommendations any shoes at this time. This is really a matter of choice as you have indicated in your comment/question.

  • thumbs up for old youtube!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @AUBURNISBOSS1 hahahaha! We'll take it ;-)

  • I think so, I just remember you saying one time it should be 10 degrees out. I want to know why it should be 10 degrees out.

  • @onemogain23 because it's more ergonomic/comfortable than trying to pull it into your body. It really is a very slight margin and if you're more comfortable the other way, use that. Check out our Stagger Your Feet video.

  • Why shouldn't your elbow be completely straight?

  • @onemogain23 do you mean the L-shape being pulled in completely perpendicular with the floor?

  • Hey coach tryouts are coming up in less then a week and my shot is horrible. Whenever i shoot i just cant seem to point directly to the basket my hand just points a little bit right of that no matter how hard i try. My question is that how can i avoid putting my elbow out as this is really messing up my shot! And how can i get my hand to point directly to the basket without it going slightly to the right messing up my shot? One more qeustion. Should i rotate my hip when i shoot?

  • @mvpmit12 Well we don't have a lot of room here so let me refer you to our shooting videos. Go check them out. If you rotate your hand placement on the ball so that your index finger is pointing up the elbow will come in. Please set down and watch these shooting videos from the shooting play list AND THEN use our video "Get Perfect Shooting Form!! Form Shooting Drill" to develop the proper mechanics. Let us know how it goes for you.

  • coach while im in my shooting motion rising up to my set point should i have my index finger in the center of the ball? or my middle?

  • @oneonly606 That index finger should be in the middle of the ball. You should be able to look at that finger and it should point directly to the basket. This location of the finger really helps to keep the elbow in. An elbow out on your stroke usually results in a flat shot.

  • @ShotScience ok thanks for the help

  • @oneonly606 Our pleasure to be of assistance.

  • I have a set point(90 degrees), but I shoot like Derek Fisher. So the ball is like over the shoulder. Is that bad?

  • @ShortCreeper This is not Good! Imagine aiming and shooting a pistol or rifle with the weapon out to the side. We really want the alignment to be Eye-Ball-Target. So we recommend the beball located in front of and above the shooting eye and NOT LIKE FISHER.

  • 18 people obvs don't know how do perform a set point :/

  • @asianflower97 They just do not know, right????

  • @ShotScience Can you please explain how to shoot from a lower set point? I know how to shoot from this form, but I'm not so good with the form for younger kids and I would like to teach a friend a few basics points. (he's not that strong in his legs or arms)

  • @koolgordon The fundamental skills are the same in both locations. The Set Point for the lower set is at the shoulder with the ball.

  • @ShotScience Alright, thanks.

  • @koolgordon You are very welcome. Glad we could help.

  • @ShotScience ball in front of your shooting eye!!!!! tom nordland told me the same thing. however, kobe and ray allen put the ball in the middle . is that also the right shooting form though? where goes the elbow though?

  • @AceboyDaniel We feel that the ball infront of and above the shooting eye is the best place for the ball in Set Point for the best accuracy. There are a lot of Pros who have their own ideas about where to ave the ball because that is how they learned. Check out Nowitski's set point. He is possibly one of the best shooters in pro ball.

  • @ShotScience what about the elbow though?

  • @AceboyDaniel If you go back to this video you will see that the elbow in in and under the ball, but not tucked in hard. It usually hangs out about 10 degrees and is comfortable. If the elbow is out further your shots will become flat. Not good!

  • Comment removed

  • @IS0iOS You are very welcome.

  • Shouldn't your L shape slant upward since your looking up? Also my knees go inward the more i bend my knees so it limits how much i can go down. is there anything i can do to prevent this?

  • @m3v2p The "L" positon of the arm can move upwards with no problem. Different people have legs that bend as you say yours do. Not a problem. You do not have to go real deep on your bending of your legs.

  • I was wondering why should you have your elbow under the ball if it feels weird. I shoot somewhat like this but my elbow is a little bit back and it feels natural.

  • @jayrad2011 If we have the ball back of the elbow it often causes a flat shot which is not desirable. Even though it feels a little unnatural, this is the best location of the ball.

  • ShotScience-I was wondering as I always had my arm vertically under the ball. Is that the right way to position it when taking a shot?

  • @AssassinsSharkCreed You do want your elbow under the ball, but not tucked in!

  • @ShotScience Thanks for the tip, Plus I'm enjoying your videos

  • @AssassinsSharkCreed We are so pleased to hear this. Please stay tuned for more.

  • hey shotscience,

I have a shooting problem. I used to be an on-point shooter, and was able to hit almost anything that came to me. Now I can barely make anything. My shot also does feel funny, and i think it changed a little from before. I've also been saying that i can't shoot anymore, and i feel that this could also be affecting my game. Can you guys please help?

    Thank you guys so much!

  • @joemama995 It sounds like your confidence is slipping. If you will send us a video we will analyze it fore you and see if we can help out. Make it 2-3 minutes ad from all angles. We do not need to see the ball go in the basket. We will be looking for your video.

  • @ShotScience Ok thanks! i will be getting you the video around next week if thats okay. I don't have time to get to a hoop till the weekend. But thank you guys so much for your help and responding to comments. you guys are awesome!

  • @joemama995 Glad we could help.

  • hey coach...

can a hand grip improve my wrist strength for shooting??

  • @jheymsz07 Well anything like that can help, however your present strength is probably fine. Almost all of your power for shooting comes from your legs and arms, not your wrist. If you check out our video "Basketball Shooting Release - The Flop Finish" you will understand that a strong wrist is not that important. We do not want to snap the wrist and get more spin!

  • on saturday i couldnt miss then on tuesday i played again and i counldnt score i think its because my wrist wasnt cocked back correct???coach

  • @lakersshowbarber24 Well there is no way we can know what your problem is, but it sounds like you are getting in tune with your stroke. You will be able to figure it out. Try the cocked wrist and tinker until you figure it out. A good idea is to make a video of your self and study it to see what you discover about your stroke.

  • @ShotScience i think i found out my shooting flaw it was that i wasnt using the flop finish but now i realized that i dont use my legs until im close to the 3pt line but i still make it not using much leg power should i start using my legs?

  • @lakersshowbarber24 Learning to use your legs for power is a major milestone. Learning to use them for the threes in critical. If the shot is short and flat or "FEELS UNDERPOWERED" YOU NEED THAT LEG POWER. Learn to use the power. It all comes from practicing and understanding what's going on.

  • shotscience: Theres just one thing im unsure about...So when we bend our legs is that when we bring up our arms into the set pint or do you start your arms in the set point position straight away

  • @Ollie872 Both things begin at the same time. Ball to set point as the leg bend to get ready. All in a very smooth manner.

  • Hey coach does it matter how you bring the ball up like I tend to bring my arms up slightly above me head and then release it with a flop finish does it matter how high i bring the ball up then release because i saw chase's highlights and he dont do that ........ and what Uriel Janoach said should i practice this drill everytime i get a chance too?

  • @lakersshowbarber24 Every player is a little different on where they like to have the ball in their set point. Chase likes a little lower, but one of my sons likes a higher set. Just don't let it get too low. PRACTICE, PRACTICE and then PRACTICE some more!!!!

  • @ShotScience thanks and should i do the drill everytime i get a chance too about getting perfect shooting form so after like i said i bring it up to just above my head and then flop it off with a high hand witch is ok correct but we got to keep the high arc and finish with the flop and have your shooting hand infront of your shooting eye correct?

  • @lakersshowbarber24 oh yeah and aint for the NEST!

  • Respond to this video... You got it!!

  • @ShotScience thanks! :)

  • @lakersshowbarber24 Your welcome.

  • @ShotScience when i said thanks now i say very thank you becuase i just got back from the y and i saw the improvement instantly!

  • @lakersshowbarber24 Yes, yes, yes!!!!

  • @lakersshowbarber24 YES!!!!

  • Hey guys :) Maybe i missed something, but i've been wondering: Is there any particular REASON as to why one should start off the shot with an L shape? I tend to point my elbow a bit more towards the sky instead of straight ahead. Is that gonna decrease accuracy or something? Thanks for your help!

  • @UrielJanoach When we point that elbow we tend to bring the ball back over our head. When we do this our shot tends to be more flat. We should really look to get a nice arc on every shot. If you check out our video on the arc it will tell you why this element is so important.

  • @ShotScience Hey, that's exactly what i realized today when i was testing the L shaped shot... I shot with a higher arc. Having watched your vid on the arc, I now know this is a good thing :) However, one thing came to my mind: If you shoot with a higher arc, the distance travelled by the ball becomes longer. then i thought: longer distance = easier to miss because during the ball's longer airtime, slight ball-release-errors transform into big problems. Is this of relevance?

  • @UrielJanoach These differences work out after you spend time working on the arc, especially if you use our "Get Perfect Shooting Form - Form Shooting Drill." Your stroke makes the changes necessary pretty quickly. Let us know how it goes.

  • yo chase why does my leg hurt everytime i play basketball? everytime i play my joint and my mid leg muscle hurts after like 5 minutes of the game.

  • @Rampage368 We are not sure what may cause this pain, but we recommend "Stretching" prior to playing as a way to make the muscles less tense and more flexible. Give this a shot and let us know how it goes. It may be something that you need a doctor to take a look at.

  • @Rampage368 ok thnx :D

  • coach before i started using my runners to play because my bball shoes hurt, my shot is completely off it either goes to high or just rims out, please help

  • @MsBigBirdsbitch We would bet on the fact that it has nothing to do with your shoes!!! If you will get us a video of you shooting we will analyze it for you and see how we can help you out.

  • @MsBigBirdsbitch Well, we would bet that your shooting problem has nothing to do with your shoes!!!! Send us a video and we will analyze it for you and see if we can help you out with your shot.

  • Hey coach I know this has nothing to do with the video but I think you'd have a good solution to my question. I just wanted to know what I can do to get on my juco team with no organized experience and how can I get the experience because I don't know if adult league will count plz give me advice thanks

  • @onemogain23 Contact the coach and ask if you can try out for the team and he agrees, do everything you can to make it. Play as hard as you can; be the first guy in every drill and always up-front when he talks; get on the floor after every loose ball AND COME UP WITH THEM; do not try to do TOO MUCH. Often we think we can dazzle the coach with "Shake and Bake" when is looking for guys who can handle the ball and finish. Be a BEAST on defense. If you can do this you may have make a chance.

  • @ShotScience i'm 100% sure this comment was your inspiritaion to make newest video that come out today, or I'm wrong hahahha

  • @BazhoFromTheHood Well, lets just say that, but the reality is that we have had this on the back-burner for a while waiting fo the new season try-outs to get underway.

  • hey coach, i am having problems from catching the ball and bringing it to my setpoint, the grip is always awkward, how do i solve this?

    thanks:)

  • @YeoWeiXiong Well Yeo, there is no magic answer on this one. We suggest that you spend time on just making the catch and getting to your set point "WITHOUT SHOOTING". You may want to watch our videos "Quick Shooting release"and "Get your Shot Off Quicker" for answers to help your problem. Let us know how it goes.

  • hey coach can you please help me on y shot, okay when i shoot it does not have any power so it just air balls or my shot is unaccurate and i dont know how to correct this please help me

  • @mrlabnilla Well, this is definitely a power problem. When you consistently shoot short the legs have failed you. See our video "MAKE THREE POINTERS Get your legs into it" on our YT channel. The answers are in this video.

  • Hey Coach, I can be a sniper from downtown with a 10 ft. rim. I can also shoot fadeaways with a 10 ft rim also. But coach, the problem is I joined a league with a 8 ft. rim. That's why my shots are always airball or sometimes it bounces over the backboard. I used to be a team captain of a team. But now, I'm the guy who has the least minutes in court. Can you please give any tips on my shooting?

I've played over 5 games now in the league. And until now, I still don't have any points.

  • Comment removed

  • @davidramos17 Find an 8' rim and go to work. You should make the adjustment fairly quickly.

  • Hi Coach, but don't the set point blocks your vision of the basket? Or is it meant to be so?

Also, at the set point, do you rise your elbow before releasing the ball or you do both at the same time?

I realized that my elbow is (the one that must be parallel to the ground) is tilted instead of the proper "L" form

  • @ExtinguishedVida Well, the Set Point location is high enough that you can see the basket under your shooting hand thumb. You have to see your target. After the leg thrust your elbow should begin to elevate upward and the wrist follow through occurs as you reach the top of your stroke. The elbow does not have to be parallel to the floor and can be raised some to allow for your vision to the basket. Hope this helps you out

  • @ShotScience Thanks for the reply! Yeah, whenever I try the "L" set point the ball blocks my vision of the basketball but if I were to leave it higher it wouldn't be a "L" shaped anymore, is that fine?

  • 45 seconds before any content, annoying

  • @BrianKerr0013 why don't you watch some of our newer stuff

  • @ShotScience hello again, i got another question, why are you a supporter of having the elbow the on same level as the shoulder? isn't that too a low release? i mean, im 5,6 and im very into fadeaway and high release cause i face tall defense, but coaches have told me that it is okay to raise the elbow more as long as i keep it in a 90 degree angle... and i shoot very well like that... s there any specific reason? thanks, great videos btw, they help everybody, always reminding you the basics ;)

  • @alejandrothefader This is fundamental shooting! There is not a problem of raising the arm higher to get the shot off. Everyone makes their own adjustments to make their shots more effective. Thanks for your nice comments.

  • @ShotScience okay and no, THANK YOU for having these videos here.. some of us who found things the hard way can clear their minds now looking at what they really do well and what they don't really need in their shot... other luckier ppl who found this early have the perfect guide to a good shot so keep it up (hope you re get paid or smth for this or else..) XD props from greece!

  • @alejandrothefader We gratefully accept your Grecian props! They are much appreciated.

  • @ShotScience hahahaha thanks XD

  • @alejandrothefader Your welcome.

  • Will you watch my shooting video, shot analysis that I uploaded. I will post it as a video response. Will you give me some tips? Thanks!

  • @BlackTopBallers You bet!

  • @ShotScience ..........do you think you could watch my shooting video and let me know what is matter with my shot.? .. I have a hitch in my shot

  • @kristinpaigge If you provide it we will check it out for you. We will be waiting.

  • great.............. keep going

  • @arsalan186 Thanks so much. We intend to keep making these videos.

  • thanks it helped me alot :)

  • @yoyofan72299 That's great to hear!

  • @yoyofan72299 This please us so much. Thanks.

  • Thanks shotscience!

  • @supermariosiu You are very welcome.

  • hey coach do u have a drills for a jump shots?

  • @iBlobs23 These will be coming up very soon.

  • Hey, I have a question that I have been wanting to ask for a very long time. So, when I shoot I jump toward the hoop about 6-7 inches. If I start out from the 3 and jump into the 2 point range is it a 2 or 3?

  • @supermariosiu If you make the shot it is a three because you began the shot from behind the three point line.

  • Hello Shot Science)

I understand that the wrist should be cocked, but when I took a video of my own shot, I saw that my wrist is not force back at the set point, but when my stroke begins, it is cocked. But I know that's just the negative motion.Do your agree wtn an idea to force the shooting wrist early in the shot pocket? If I do this, it becomes harder to keep the same form I've worked for. That's just pretty umcomfortable for me.Thanks for attention

  • @TheBkiller12 Not everyone has the flexibility in their wrist to cock it to a 90 degree angle. Just get what you can and still be comfortable. Being comfortable is the key to all of shooting.

  • shotscience can you help me? i watched all of these videos and i tried my shot, but when i look at it it has ZERO rotation. i can make 75% of my shot anyways, but it really bugs me. how can i put spin on my shot?

  • @corndog984 The rotation or spin on the ball is created by the wrist follow through just like when you throw a baseball. We have a video on this rotation and we call it "The Flop." Check it out.

  • Are you suppose to be able to see the rim in your set point? Because i only see the rim in the triple threat position and after my release. When im in my set point i only see what's directly in front of me. Not the rim. The ball is right in between my line of vision to the rim. Is this correct? If not should I have a higher set point?
