You should contact Nintendo about this as a possible commercial idea. Would it work with any Midi equipped synth or keyboard? They would need one already or could the sounds come from the computer? Could this be turned into a game like Guitar hero? Or a coin op arcade game?
Are you recording this into some kind of DAW? it would interesting to see what the MIDI information looks like mapped out. maybe you could also run it through some kind of auto-tune vst effect? maybe that would make it more usable. I would love to see more videos that have different sounds.
You're the only person who was willing enough to do Doctor Who with a Theremin. So even if the pitch is off, it's still great for a sci-fi doctor who loving geek like me. :)
I started to develop such an interface, but it turns out that it's very hard to sound good by visually matching your on-screen position... even slight error sounds really bad. The way to sound good (I've made progress since this video!) is to use your ear only, and use muscle memory for hand positioning. It's not easy, requires a good ear.
You could add to your program a visual pitch-assist function perhaps, allowing the player to compensate quickly. There are set notes in a Key based on the scale, and if you incoporate something like the music modal system (scales: aeolian, dorian, phrygian etc.) the pitch-assist can kick-in only where it's relevant. For an even finer level of smart, look to the Indian music system.
freekin good effort it has to be said. a very hard instrament to play the doctor who theme too, specially when it pitches up and down alot during the busier parts of the theme, great effort
Nicely done! I play a bit of theremin using an Etherwave standard. I was wondering if you've ever played an analog theremin and how your project compares. Do you get note linearity, i.e. is a half step about the same distance up and down the scale, or is it much smaller in the high range?
At one point I was so intent on modeling a real Theremin that I bought an Etherwave Standard. I analyzed the pitch & volume response and modeled the Wii Theremin after that -- except it's 100% linear, which is nice. Then I invested in an Etherwave Pro (yes, many $) to analyze & model the exact sound of a high-end Theremin. I surprised myself and fell so in love with the instrument that I've packed away the Wii stuff and now just play the real thing. It's my new passion!
Wow. I bet that's a blast to play. I've always wanted to try one. You should post a video of yourself on the etherwave pro. I play a couple instruments, but for some reason the theremin sucks me in more than anything else a lot of the time. I'd like to eventually get good enough to sing while playing theremin. I have an effects pedal that lets me play simple chords on it, but my pitch isn't very good when all my attention is on the theremin. Once I start singing, forget about it.
I recorded video of a few of my best pieces a few months back... before my daughter was born. Not much time for editing video much less playing the Theremin these days, but I'll ping you when I get around to posting them. Maybe I'll invent a Theremin where you wave a diaper around in the air, I'm getting very good at that :)
Oh - that's hysterical! It's pretty rare that watching something on video gets me to laugh out loud, and I was rolling just from watching your facial expression while attempting this. Bravo.
there's some videos about/with Delia on youtube, and i was watching them earlier and it may explain why your videos ended up in my "recommended to you videos" -- you could even play your theremin on the couch while watching tv ! :)
I agree with GeorgeWTush. You are just the cutest thing since puppies were invented!
