Wow, you argue intelligibly, what planet is this? The amount of resource depletion is much more severe when humans obtain their nutrition from animals, instead of fruits and vegetables. The difference in impact on the environment if I eat a steak and if I eat a salad, or rice and beans is staggering in proportion. I believe the Planet could handle our present load, on an vegetarian diet, while it cannot on a meat based one. We also could do away with the fiction of economics.

I agree animals SHOULD NOT go through abuse/torture. What people really have to do is bring regulations forward to implement them into slaughter houses/chicken barns/pig barns..etc. That is where a person can actually make a difference. Being a "vegan" doesnt stop it from happening it just stops your contribution. IF you would actually fight for some regulations/rules there might be hope to prevent torture. You can't stop someone from eating meat but you can change hot it is produced.
