This is a much better performance. I had just posted on another video from a few nights before in Poland that the sound was awful and he sounded pitchy...like he was overblowing the mic. But this sounds MUCH better. This song was really perfect for his darker voice, and I knew that he had the capability to really make it his own. I think he really nailed this particular performance.
Respect to Ray, the evil laugh doesn't feel right unless it's coming from Phil. It's uncomfortable to see someone else try to pull it off. In his defense, he had some pretty big shoes to Phil...... yeah I went there. I hate myself more than you possibly could. Trust me.
Cette daube de wilson ? il n'a rien de bien ce type,y se la pette trop,le bon vieu phil collins assurai,il était marrant et vraiment génial sur cette chanson
Ray did do a good job aside from the "Ha Ha Huh" bit. He sounds more comedic than sinister there. I burst out laughing I must confess! He has a great voice though!
I love Phil. But I think Ray did just fine here. People had already made up their mind about him before they really gave him chance. Too bad they only recorded 1
Phil is no Ray, and neither is Peter. My point is that they are all different, not better or worse (IMHO). People came to identify Genesis with Phil so much that they couldn't accept the change. So even is Ray were the "best" of the three, it wouldn't have mattered. He would never have been able to surmount that.
i think he did the best job he could do. I'm sure we all agree that Ray is no Phil, but Phil is no Peter either. Each has own songs they made famous, and each took their lumps
Honestly, I thought he did ok with this. He didn't do horrible like nearly everyone else is saying, but it isn't the same without Phil. Phil sings it much better.
i dont know why everyones complaining about rays rendition of this song, i think he did a great job, of course phils better but give ray credit. (in fact this is the only song that i think he can sing ok from previous era genesis).
I really think some comments are somewhat unfair. Yo have to put in perspective. Mama was dropped from the set for most of the 1992 tour, so the 1998 version with RW was somewhat the revival of the song.
You're right...but he left on his own accord, and someone had to do it.....I think poor Ray should get a break here. He did the best he could given that few were going to accept him.
This is a very difficult song to perform live. Even under the best of circumstances Phil, Mike and Tony had to work very hard to stay as close to orginal "sound" of the song. Personally, I think Ray did a great job. Give him a chance to do a polished studio version and I bet some of you would be quite surprised. BTW, "Calling All Stations" was a very underrated album...and I proudly have it right along with all of my other Gensis albums.
It was definitely a solid performance by Ray, but obviously it could never compare to Phil Collins, I mean, that was Phils song and he just carried it
I agree, no one can carry this song off properly except for Phil. It requires a type of personality and feeling that only Phil can give it. I concur, without Phil it does sound pretty flat. Not a fine moment, but at least Ray made an effort.
They should've gave Ray more time.............who gives a fuck what the states thought of this lineup?........I'm not defending him but i'm just sayin......This version is so N so but I still think they should've gave him a lot more time to adjust.......
This song belongs vocally to Phil, no doubt. No one can possibly carry it off with the energy and sound that he can. Ray just doesn't have personality, plain and simple, and that's what this song needs, along with a voice that doesn't sound like a stereotypical session singer.
I'd disagree on "stereotypical sesion singer" -- then, I've not heard many, so fuck it, but I do agree that this song belongs more to Phil than to Ray.
I think his work with genesis was great, why didn't they give him more time? I wish they'd spent more time with wilson, so he can find his place in their music, and they (and we) can adjust to the new singer.
It took me some time, but I think 'Calling All Stations' is a great genesis album.
hahahahahahaha omg thats the funniest thing i ever heard!!!!!!!! u have no taste whatsoever....phil collins is a million times better wtf is ur problem....omg i feel like punching u in the face
You my friend have just summed up what is wrong with the world today. I supposed you go to football matches and punch the hell out of people wearing a different colour shirt. Its an opinion and everyone is entitled to one. Grow up.
This is one of their most difficult songs to carry (as mentioned by firstmusic00!) Ray has a completely different voice (to Phil)and is nearer to the Gabriel voice. I reckon given the chance to do another set of recordings,Ray would have been able to prove the critics wrong! Check out his solo work, It is pretty damn good!!!Because he is different,it doesn't make him a bad singer/performer.Give the man a break, he had to fill some huge boots:)!!!
sounds bad realy

Ray's voice is too weak for such a song. And he does not really believes in what he is singing.

Wilson is a very good singer, although I don't think his voice fit with Tony & Mike. I would have rather seen Fish with Genesis.

Ray's a really good singer, if you'd never heard Phil sing it, you'd be happy with this. The problem is:
When you need to replace Phil Collins, and Peter Gabriel won't turn up, it's not going to sound right.

This song suits Ray's voice and he sounds great..
however to me, even though it is a "Genesis" song, it's a Phil signature song..

Without Phil on vocals, this song falls flat on it's arse. Ray Wilson's limited range and lack of personality are just too obvious on this.
