Respond to this video... Makes me proud to be from the BX. Classy performance from a classy band. Mom dukes had this album in heavy rotation when I was a kid. LEGENDARY.
Hello Coati Mundi, Vibe player, thanks for digging into your treasure chest for these great clips-this sound touched a social nerve ending (and still touches mine) --I still play my LP--touring coming up?
Thanks so very much for sharing all these wonderful videos. I am such a fan of the Dr. Buzzard/Kid Creole/Coati Mundi network with all its related artists. One of my biggest regrets is being too young to see you guys live back in the day. What a FANTASTIC collective of talent - lyrics, composition, musicianship and showmanship. Thank you for sharing it with us - then and now.
Thanks for posting, Coati! I've been following you and August for years from Dr Buzzard to Kid Creole! I have most of your albums and wish there were more.
Hey were you a teenager when you guys recorded that album? Wiki has you born in 1963 so that made you a teenager when you guys played the Dinah Shore show. I miss DBOSB!! Music of my teenage years!
Thanks to Coati Mundi, the Browder/Darnell Bros. and Cory Daye (the most tragically underrated/underexposed singer of all time) for giving the world such wonderful music. I was only 4 when this was recorded, and I'm not a bid oldies guy, but I can't live without this music.
Was this a Group W show? It would be awesome to have some remastered original Merv, Dinah, or even Mike Douglas stuff (i mean just in general!) from those days! The production was just stunning and we never thought about it back then, it just happened. When these shows left and Talk To The Hand came in (and took Heckle and Jeckle or Tom and Jerry off for crying out loud) I knew it was over but I hoped the station would regain it's 'mind'.
Thus were born my teenage years=SHAZBOT! Thanks Andy!
Sugar Coated Andy you are amazing and I love DBOSB. I have ALL your albums & play them constantly. (Calling all Beatnicks included) And I completely support your cassettes and walkman !!! Thanks so much for all your brilliant posts.
What a sound! What spectacular music talents and showmanship!!!
Thank you for posting and sharing this, and other wonderful memories we all can enjoy and cherish. I cannot help wondering if these talented people realized the perfection of their performances.
I don't know about the two guest to the left and I think Sean Connery was still way too young, however, for host Dinah Shore, this surely MUST HAVE evoked nostalgic memories of the 1940s. It had to.
Only one of their music I vaguely remember in 76, 77 but it just didn't seem to get play on SF radio stations and I was too young to get hip about going to record stoes in those days. Damn. Well, better late than never?
Listen for great music like this on a new radio station called "OffTheCharts" - featuring 70's (and some 80's) lost hits and chart wonders!
Go to Live365.com, type OFFTHECHARTS in the Search box and click on the station logo. The audio stream should begin. Become a VIP member and listen commercial free!
This song will be fearured on our first show beginning November 8.
I still have this LP, yes LP. I play it often. Cory was hot a hell. Dr. Buzzards group was phenomenal. Love the vibe player. He partied on every song. I miss there sound.
THANK YOU AND THE BAND.. for your contribution to the realm of CLASSIC and TIMELESS music! My mommy use to sing this to me as a child and we'd dance and laugh and start the whole album over again till i felll asleep on the floor. As an Adult ,it is evrywhere..on my ipod/stereo/laptop/pc and phone!!
Exceptional music. Such joy ... I caught this original performance on TV ... bought the album immediately and wore it out. Finally got to see August and Andy on a Kid Creole tour in SF years later. Love the style and attitude ... thanks so much for putting this up and bringing back those wonderful feelings!
The lead singer is Cory Daye... and songs/arrangements split between Stony Browder on guitar/piano & August Darnell, bass. Mickey Sevilla drums, Andy Hernandez, vibes, Don Armando Bonilla, percussion. The y cut 2 Lps on RCA-- AFL1-1504 & AFL1-2402 in '75-'76. They had it goin' on! My fave was from their first recording, "(for pain & misery, my friend) Cherchez la Femme" ^..^
"..and I'm gonna' go school again for you, just to get my equivalency diploma." The phrase has been in my head for over 30 years. We never really know the things that will ultimately have an impact on our minds. This group meant more to me than I knew. Boy, do we need them now.
@MundiWorld Man I know it can be difficult but I would love to see you guys tour the US again. I heard Cory lives in Germany these days but a summer US tour would be EPIC.
This reminds me of Saturday nights when the adults would put on records and sit and drink and play cards. They would tease us kids about not knowing about "grown folks music". I didn't understand what they meant then but I do now. I just recently bought this on cd for myself and blast it in my car all the time. I get strange looks from time to time but who cares? This is MUSIC. Thank you Coati Mundi for the walk down memory lane.
When I first heard this song I thought what kind of music is this and I bought the recordl ihave been totally hooked ever since, I love the way Cory ends the song. My neighbors still hear me blasting this music in my house. I get utter goose bumps and dance around the house. YEA Savannah band you rock
Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band sure was ahead of its time. Do your thing, Miss Daye! Rest in peace, Stony. At one time, I had a crush on all the musicians in the band, especially Stony. I recently saw a photo of actor Laz Alonso, and when he wears that cap, he looks as if he could portray Stony Browder Jr. in a biopic about the band. Hmmm ... sounds like a great idea for a film!
I just love Cory Daye. She is brilliant, Wish someone would find a clip of her singing Pow Wow that was such a fun song to dance too.More Cory More. Thanks Coati for posting love your fancy foot work too.
My best friend and I were kid fanatics for DBOSB but no one else understood. We dressed like them, talked like them, walked like them and collected anything featuring any of the group members. These are my fondest music memories. I would do anything to play or mount a tribute to this music. Mickey, Cory, Coati, August aka Tommy and Stony live forever. P.S. Limelight too. Peace. D
They were great thats for sure. loved the style and music. It was just so different from other disco song. Had real meaning and told a story. GREAT GREAT MUSIC
Hey, STUDIO54, None of them are getting any younger ! Andy Hernandez (Coati Mundi) is in his late 50's. Kid Creole (August Darnell)is either 62 or 63. And the great Cory Daye is going to be 56 soon. The time for a reunion tour is now !!
Hi. It's been 32 years since "I'll Play The Fool" was released, and it just keeps getting better and better ! When are Cory Daye, Kid Creole, and Coati Mundi going to go on a reunion tour ?
This looks and sounds like a live performance rather than a sound track. This is really great to see. Any idea who the side players and backup singers in the band were? Thanks for posting, Mr. Mundi! The videos you've shared are some true gems.
Hi "slicksebring":Mucho merci & glad you like them. Don't know side players cause they were used solely for the broadcast. However the Bellhop singer on left is Debra Anderson who became part of "Stargard". One of the musicians is Joel Peskin a highly accomplished Sax player who I ran into much later on when I was music director for the televised Desi Awards Show & he was in the TV band.
It was a live show on Dinah Shore show. I wish someone would post Cory singing Pow Wow that was a great song and so much fun to dance to. You rock Cory
