  • no problems with the cops about the camera in the helmet??

  • @roninsoul I've never had any issues with them over cameras, but this one is mounted on the side of the helmet rather than in it. They're pretty lenient down here, so I think so long as you can see what you're doing they don't really care too much.

  • @Trinith there been somes guys there complaining that cops give them a hard time and tickets for having a hard surface protruding from the helmet

i have a saw like mohawk now in my helmet, on top of that i still have the go pro in my chin, getting a little nervous about the cops complaining they think im gonna do stunts etc lolol being treated like a badass when im a chicken

  • @roninsoul Really? I think I'd have a field day with that in court, especially considering how weak the camera mounts are. I'm also not too worried about what they think I'm going to do...they can't do anything to me because they think I look like I might wheelie. Hell, they never did anything when they caught me wheelieing... :D

  • @Trinith i think its more about the harassement, they will do it so many times they are bond to have plp paying the ticket , i know the mount if super hard and will break in a fall, the argument they use is, since its a hard surface if you fall, it could hit the ground in a way that may lead you to break your neck

  • @roninsoul I can see that happening unfortunately. It really pays to know your end of the law. Just because you got a ticket doesn't mean you actually do anything and frankly I'd LOVE to see one of them point out in the vehicle code where it says that cameras are unsafe and deemed illegal. They wouldn't be able to. I've had cops give me some shit about plenty of things in the past and it really pays to show them some respect at the scene and fight like a madman in court.

  • @Trinith i didnt get a ticket , im just talking about in your end , plp have been complaining due too a part in the law refering to hard surfaces on the helmet , the definition is subjet to interpretation, due to that, some are enforcing their own view of the law

  • What brand helmet do you have? A lot might have to do with quality of helmet made because of wind noise. But maybe not. You never know

  • @VitalityJolt It's a Shoei RF1000. I think it's fairly normal for a helmet to whistle when the visor is up, I just miss my old setup that caught almost no wind noise from anything.

  • I experimented heavily with microphone placement in my helmet and oddly enough what worked best for me was removing the foam mic filter, closing the visor, and keeping the mic directly in front of my mouth but facing off to the side or pointing upward. If you experiment and can't figure it out then PM me and I'll upload a video showing where my mic is installed.

Oh, yeah... setting 1 only. Setting 2 is for detecting mice and 3 is for listening to orbiting satellites.... ;(

  • @dodgerider26 That's a bit of a strange placement. I am going to experiment a bit more with mic placement, but I dunno how much it will matter. Summer's almost over, won't be much need to keep the visor up any longer...till it starts getting cold and everything fogs up anyway. :)

  • Hey, FYI, the videos are more crisp if you record in 1080. The actual digital sensor is native to 1080p so recording in 720p causes some slight blurring on details. It gives less of a "fish eye" effect and increases the clarity in 1080p as well.... It of course also makes for larger file sizes and longer upload times though.

  • @dodgerider26 Yeah I am doing it in 720 just for the sake of memory card space right now.

  • I think you're worrying too much dude. It sounds pretty darn good. I think there was only a lil excessive wind cos visor was up. Doesn't bother me, can still understand everything you're saying! :)

  • @funkiershit Yeah that seems to be the consensus. I just miss having no wind noise at all I think. I might mess with it a bit more, but I don't think it'll get any better, starting to think it doesn't really need to...

  • Hi, like youre vids, I have noticed alot of motovloggers have microphone issues...Has anyone out there tried a throat microphone? I tried to post a link and it errors, search" throat micophone " on amazon.com

I have used these in aviation and they work in crazy noise, however it was with a radio never a recording device, it may work , worth a try!

    Happy trails, Leo

  • @leotechcnc I've definitely been considering one for use with a com system, might work on a camera..

  • I agree with you about the fish-eye effect, although it really isn't distracting unless you are shooting in a wide-open environment and start catching too much horizon. Even though you are picking up the wind, your voice is still coming through good.

  • @XXX526 Yeah, it's not as pronounced on this camera as on others I've seen. The worst is when you're sitting stationary in a parkinglot and looking around. The lines really go batshit.

  • The wind isn't too bad considering your visor is open. if it were closed I don't think it'd be an issue at all. If you want to cut the sensitivity, you could try a piece of tape over the mic then put the windscreen over that. Alternately, if the Drift will take a regular lapel mic you might get one and try that.

btw... I am not a fan of the super wide angle lenses either. :D

  • @RC62 You mean the little foam thing that goes on the mic? I've got mine on there, and I even tried a piece of tape over the mic itself. That's why I don't think it's wind hitting the mic but rather the mic being so sensitive it's picking up the wind noise of the helmet itself.

  • @invisiblemon That's kind of what I am thinking. It's not perfect, but I'm not in a huge rush to change anything right this second.

  • i cut about 60% of the wind sound. I got a Foam cover thingy that goes over the mic, and put 2 on so it cuts more noise. Then i cut a slit in the side of the cheek pad thats where it sits in their. The new Drift HD is a heaps better unit. Just came out. Has all the suff that your saying that needs to be fixed

  • @AridersLife Hm, never thought of cutting the pad and actually putting it IN the padding... Are they doing something about the sound levels? The Kodaks had mics that would change their own volume so that the loudest sound was never above x db. Was pretty awesome.

  • @Trinith yeh i would love to see that setting. I will pass this info onto the drift guys. i reckon its just a firmware edit to do that :)

  • Hey Trinith,

What worked for me also Wild bill was to put the mic under the lining either at your forehead or slightly to the side.

    Keep mic sensitivity on 1

Keep the sponge cover on the mic too

This works best up to approx 70mph

  • @SVSF650 I'll have to give it a shot, thanks!

  • I put my mic between the helmet & the cheek pad. The foam in the cheek pad works well to get rid of wind noise and stops the mic from popping.

  • @gogosor That's where mine is. Under the foam right behind the ear. I had it under the cheek pad and it was still pretty noisy.

  • Don't forget that you can get the 3.5mm Female Mic-In Cable (1m) from Drift.

A microphone in cable allowing for connection of the Drift HD170 cameras to standard 3.5mm male microphones. Or place it above your eyes like BJMoorhouse stated.

  • @vegasstreetriders Oh they made an adapter thing? I'll have to check that out! Maybe then I can get a slimmer mic or something more hidable. I think the sensitivity revolves around the camera software, but that's just speculation.

  • @Trinith Just place the mic gain on level one. That's right next to off. Hope this helps...

  • @vegasstreetriders I did that the day I got the camera. It's set at 1 for this video.

  • Possibly mount it above your eyes - on the top foam. Most whistling in helmets comes from around the neck where the foam is slightly thinner to let your ears into the helmet.

Above the eyes would have the wind channelled away from it even when your visor is open.

  • @BJMoorhouse I'll have to give that a shot, but I think it'll be counter productive. I can't put it IN the foam up there, and when I crack the visor as I usually do that's where the wind goes. But I never thought of trying it, so we'll see what happens.

  • @Trinith You'll have to let me know, that's where I have my bluetooth hands free kit mounted, not in any foam though - literally just stuck with velcro to the hard eps above and slightly to the left of my eyes (to the left just so that it doesn't get in the way when I've got my chin on the tank ;) )

  • If you google 'M-Audio - MicroTrack 10dB Pad with Phase Inverter' you'll find a $25 attenuator that might help.

I made a line to mic level attenuator with a few resistors, I'll try and find the schematic, something similar might work.

I'm going to buy a Drift HD as soon as they come out, I am worried about the mic sensitivity issues.

The audio in this video was good, it just barely distorted a couple of times.

  • @JimNtexas I've read about doing it for a memo recorder before, don't think it's terribly hard. I think you'll love the Drift, you just gotta learn to almost whisper when the visors down.

  • The wind was not bad I could hear every thing you clearly. Most people put the mic in the ear port area or just under the padding by the ear from what I have seen in vids.

  • @azwakko Yeah that's where mine is. It's really not all that bad, but it bugs me because the last setup had almost 0 noise.

  • @Trinith you may want to check this guy's channel he did a good tricks and tips vid for the drift. his user name is dafobra.

  • No clue.

  • 501 (inside joke for the rest of 'ya)

  • @Kodiak31415 it appears i was first. second. third. fourth....

  • @c90FTW 6th...7th...:)

  • have you tried wrapping the mic in foam? like ear phone foam? i'm guessing you have but you didn't mention it. i don't have a drift so i don't have any practical advice. sry. the picture looks great tho.

  • @2ballsperbike I have not. That might not be a bad idea actually.

  • @c90FTW I think it's great that they wanted to make it sensitive enough to capture good audio in fairly quiet situations. But come on..that's a little excessive.
