what is this "reason" that people talk about, how can anything produced by flawed human beings something so porous be the basis for any argument? you need to stop making reason your master because it can't explain anything fully, there is something beyond what your eyes can see and if you've got "reason" clouding your sight you wont see it
What it is saying is that as christians we miss out, push people back because judge them, Jesus is to set us free not chain us in laws made by man, so don't let others tell you that who you are, I know when people hear the truth, you can run from it, but just because people go to church don't mean their a christian, we live day to day, we are human and we fall, but we must find ground to talk to eachother. Open up listen, no pressure!
This sounds nice but those of us who have left the church are familiar with invitations to "have a conversation." You can't have a conversation with people who believe they know the truth and yet refuse to look at evidence and the criticisms of their faith. That's a one sided conversation. More people are leaving the church today because the criticisms of the Christianity are all over the internet where they are safe from book burning and the people who espouse them from persecution.
Anytime you base a belief system on a set of supposedly divinely-inspired books that contain dogmatic beliefs that are to be held on faith, and then if you expose those scripturally-based beliefs to the light of reason & progress....well, what you get is the realization that your previously-held beliefs were (for the most part) equal parts bullshit & magic.
Bascially, complete nonsense.
Time to grow up, that's all.
Reality is much better if recognized for what it is.
@LetReasonPrevail1 Nothing is dogmatic in the bible. The bible was written by many authors, a lot that didn't even know each other at all, so having nothing contradict is one solidification that it isn't made up. Also, you refuse to look up all the extra-biblical accounts of Jesus and the miracles performed.(extra-bib means not in the bible)
The bible is reality, you would see if you ACTUALLY read it instead of basing points off of lies told to you. You have not read a thing in it.
Thanks for the response, and I hope you consider my retort:
Your assertion that nothing contradicts in the bible is absurd & baseless. Their are a myriad of apparent contradictions in the bible, & the fact that you can come up with far-fetched & highly implausible rationalizations does not in any convincing way refute them.
And consistentcy by itself provides no sound logical basis for concluding that the contents of a particular collection of books represent actual events.
The set of Harry Potter novels can be shown to be very internally consistent, yet this says NOTHING about whether or not the events as described within said books are actual versus fictional
Further, the extra-biblical accounts of Jesus are rife with problems. And most don't even purport to have been written by eye witnesses, but instead are merely attesting to the beliefs of Christians at the time & I don't know anyone who questions whether or not Christians existed!
@LetReasonPrevail1 The very learned scientist said it, I believe it and that's good enough for me, I feel like that is what atheists are saying. Ideas like evolution and the big bang theory are porous, but some people choose to put their faith in that.
The bible doesn't instruct us to search for truth & to be pragmatic (i.e. to test out ideas, see if they work, then re-evaluate & start over again).
The bible says "This IS the truth". Believe it & then go tell other people to believe as you do
This is EXACTLY what it means to be dogmatic
Now the fact that you obviously find the term "dogmatic" to have a negative connotation is your problem, but to try & deny the very nature of religious belief is just silly.
Further, you claim that I haven't "read a thing" in the bible. On what basis do you make this bald assertion?
I have, in fact, just made my way through 2nd Chronicles in my attempt to read the bible from front to back. Previously, I have read individual books of the NT including many of Paul's Epistles (by the way, most scholars believe at least half of the letters assigned to Paul's authorship were not written by him)
I have found 1st & 2nd Chronicles to be incredibly boring & monotonous what with the endless genealogies coupled with the retelling of stories already included in previous books
& I find interesting the numerous references to books that are not in the bible & for which no copies exist such as the "Book of the Kings of Judah" or "Book of the prophets"
So god couldn't ensure these books remained available, yet they are referred to in his perfect, inspired scripture? Seriously?
But getting back to the "extra-bib" sources for Jesus, the most well known is Jocephus' Testimonium Flavianum, but this text suffers greatly from source quality, namely, the earliest secure reference to the related Jesuss passage is found in the writings of the 4th-century Christian apologist & historian Eusebius. Sorry, but Eusebius isn't an impartial source. He's about at partial as it gets! So to say that the quote in question definitely came from Jocephus is silly.
In any case, I hope that I have addressed all your assertions and challenges.
You certainly packed many, many claims into two, short paragraphs.
I hope to hear back, and I hope your next responses contain more than bald assertions & unsupported conclusions about my biblical knowledge or lack thereof.
Here we are told that god decides to punish a helpless, newborn child b/c David has angered him. And god's chosen method of punishment is to inflict the child with sickness & then to let the child slowly die over 7 long days.
Tell me, did this child find that god was just, merciful & good? Or did this child find god to be sadistic & pure evil?
Demographically single young men are the largest numbers among the missing in congregations.
In our culture of "Girls Gone Wild", you've seen the commercials.. Young men are fully aware just how dishonest, selfish, manipulative, promiscuous their female counterparts are on average yet all they hear is that men are failing, weak, childish, "Man Up"! like the larger feminized culture that blames men exclusively for everything. Never accountability for women.
What happened to prayer? Does anyone ever ask the Holy Spirit for guidance? I beseech everyone to sit down and read Revelation 3:18; and look up, because it's almost time.
I'm 28 and I left the church nearly 2 years ago. I read too much of the Bible and determined that a good and loving god could not have inspired it.
To any young Christian who feels doubt in their heart:
Pick up your Bible and start reading it from Genesis. If you make it through all the war, genocide, slavery, and severed foreskins that God demands - and STILL want to call him your god - congratulations.
However I suspect that you'll ditch the Bible somewhere around Deuteronomy.
Actually the New Testament is even worse than the Old Testament when you really think about it. In the New Testament it is revealed that non-beleivers get to be tormented in Hell for all of eternity. It's disgusting that someone even came up with the idea.
in my church the youth ministry is massive its cause were at church that moves with the ages and not stay in the past, the youth wanna be in a church thats fun, alive and full of God's promises not organs and stained glass windows
And it needs to be okay for anyone to express their doubts or their differences of opinion, young and old. I'm 47 and just left a church that was not open to dialogue and often the assumption was made that we all believed the same thing. It was anathema to some people to find out that not everyone held the same opinion or valued the same things. How refreshing to now be somewhere that is theologically open and actually made that part of their vision.
I have had a conversation on this page with a christian for some days. Anyone wondering why so many leave in droves please enjoy reading the chat. You may enjoy such highlights as neandethals are just mistaken pigs, the Lucy find was a fake and that because proteins randomly forming is improbable evolution is untrue. Kids today get an education... they dont buy this crap. I hope you enjoy your lives, dont let someone else live yours for you. Look at the facts and decide for yourslef. Much love x
@journeyofthebeagle What am I going to find in a museum that is going to show me "truth"? (I'm secretly sitting here saying to myself "please, please, please say fossils that prove evolution") So I can proceed to humiliate you beyond belief.
@ITTutorCanada prehaps start with dinosaurs from 60 million years ago, on the earth for 185 million years. Prehaps a homo erectus, or a neanderthal? Maybe look at the aincient Sanskrit language that predates Adam 6,000 years ago.... THEN prehaps look at fossils. Funny how the deeper we dig the simpler life gets... weird.
@journeyofthebeagle So, a couple of fossils dubbed "homo erectus" are now evidence that we evolved? Do we have DNA from any of those 3-5 fossils that were ever found? Who said Adam lived 6000 years ago? Why does the pre-cambrian -to- cambrian fossil record show a diverse range of life suddenly coming into existence, then narrowing down (aka inverse model of darwins tree of life)? Why are there hundreds of "living fossils"? Did evolution forget scorpions, crabs, etc?
@journeyofthebeagle 60 million years ago? You've got your dates wrong bro, how come we've unearthed dinosaur TISSUE that is still viable aka hasn't decayed? Wouldn't such tissue perish over the course of dozens or hundreds off millions of years of crazy climate change around the world? What other fossils should I look up? Neanderthals, which were entirely created based on a single tooth found, which later turned out to be from an extinct pig?
@ITTutorCanada Are you confident enough to go to your nearest large museum and visit neanderthal remains and claim they are that of a pig? Can you show me the science journals/papers that back any of what you said ? Why not ? I wont waist any more time with a closed mind. Enjoy your life. I advise that you think for yourself, but I know you wont. Much human love, JOTB
@journeyofthebeagle Should I check out the "Lucy" fossil, which, after decades of being touted to be THE definitive proof of an intermediary species between human apes, turned out to be horseshit too? Let me get something clear here: you're using dry, dusty bones without viable, testable DNA (and only a few bones at that) as evidence for a theory which has NOTHING to do with bones, but with DNA? You're over your head, your people stopped that nonsense ages ago.
@journeyofthebeagle So now that you're up to speed on the fact that your people abandoned using dry dead bones to prove a matter that is explicitly proposed to exist within DNA/RNA, let's talk about real science here and not what creative artist renditions of a few bones can make up. Douglas Axe, journal of molecular biology (aka international peer reviewed scientific publication) on random protein synthesis and mutation resistance. Odds of randomly making a basic protein: 1 in 10 ^125th power.
@ITTutorCanada you clearly dont understand evolution to make this point. Not one evolutionary paper will claim random/chance as a process. I advise you read up on natural affinity, di-sulphide bonds, hydrogen bonds.. etc. It amazes me how many christians quote science with no more than poor school grades. I dont mind you joining the debate but go to school first so you know what you are debating.
@journeyofthebeagle You're right, it must have nothing to do with evolution. I guess that's why someone funded his lab to do the research and why his research was published in the international, peer reviewed journal of molecular biology. Because it's a big waste of time and money. You're such a goof. I know you all say the same thing, evolution isn't by chance. Here you're saying it's by natural bonds. You still need an highly specific order of exponential potentials.
@journeyofthebeagle I think I'll leave you with those 4 comments for now. We've established that as far as education on these subjects, you're spewing out the championed evidence of darwinists from text books circa 1960 or so. Read over those 4 comments that completely obliterate all that nonsense you just said. In fact look up that article on random protein synthesis and mutation resistance by Douglas Axe and have a read. If you can even partially grasp it we'll pick up from there. Sound good?
@ITTutorCanada What is your scientific field? Mine is Medicine. I have studied both protein synthesis and mutations. Finding gaps in nowlege and planting god there is not only short sighted but weak. But believe what you will. It's your life and your years. Before I go... why would you want a god that condoned slavery, commanded genocide, instructed infanticide, condoned incest, allowed and instructed for female sex slaves etc.. you can have him, but dont think your sick god will hold us back.
@journeyofthebeagle I'm not buying that you're in medicine, unless you work on an assembly line putting buckleys in boxes. You respond to that basic information with ad hominems. If you had any sense of intelligence you'd realize that even if your points were correct, none of them have anything to do with the TRUTH of a matter. On the contrary, you've demonstrated you're not interested in truth, but just biased against a world view. People like you sir, are the ones holding us back.
@journeyofthebeagle Also this is not a God of the gaps argument. That proposition is a stupid as me listening to mozart, and proposing to you that this is so beautiful and extraordinarily complex and these sounds I'm hearing must have been influenced or arranged by an intelligence..... and you reply with "OH YOU RELIGIOUS FOOL, THAT'S A MOZART-OF-THE-GAPS ARGUMENT. Can you see the stupidity of your counter argument now?
@ITTutorCanada Do musical notes form in stars? Do musical notes have natural affinity for each other? Do musical notes form chords (amino acids) in early earths enviroment? Do musical notes have a dna/ biological tree of development of complexity via a known mechanism of mutation? Also Mozart is beautiful, our bodies are flawed, poorly developed. We are not well made.. the recuurant laryngeal nerve, the telomere, the optic nerve, dna reading.... God is either lazy or evil.
Come on Christians! We need to do a better job of brain-washing toddlers and pre-teens so that their capacity to reason is totally destroyed before they reach puberty!
It is also up to us as Christians and church leaders to nurture the growth of the faith of our young people who we have been given charge over while under our teaching during their time with us. Christ uses the parable of the soils in Mark chapter 4 versus 1-20 as an example of the different types of soils the seed ( word of God) can fall on. We have to take advantage of the time given to us to be with all new believers to grow the word of God as well as we can in the case they may leave us.
@TheJmpeters Why are superstitions made by people from the Bronze Age still held on to today? Why do people never question what their families propose like having a belief in God? Why is it even called a belief? Why are there different religions yet an all-knowing and all-powerful being apparently around to test us and as most of us seem to fail, throws us in an eternal place of suffering? Why does a bible influenced by a omnipotent being have to be translated and revised? Why give us thought?
@ThaMuzikFiend First of all, they aren't superstitions, Jesus was a real person who actually lived and died which is documented in many books and accounts of history. God isn't testing us, He left commandments, which were written and proven again by history, not proposed as you say, for us to follow. Eternal suffering is only for those who refuse to believe in Him and His son Jesus, not by failing some test. The Bible is translated to all languages so all can read it. It has never been revised.
@TheJmpeters Muhammad was real too, just like Buddha, James Smith and L. Ron Hubbard. Plus, what's worse is when christianity was forced onto civilizations by the Spanish when they colonized all those places. Also adding how americans converted the blacks and made them to what most are still, christians. Then Constantine, made Catholicism into the "universal" religion giving pagan holidays different names so everybody could be united. Religion was just for political power... faith isn't pride.
@ThaMuzikFiend Many countries or leaders have done many things in the name of religion, but that doesn't make them truly faithful just because they use the name of whatever religion they choose. You're right, faith isn't pride, and we are told as Christians, true Christians, to not be prideful or boastful or hauty towards anyone ever. People can justify anything under a religious flag, that's why we should follow a doctrine and a faith based on Christ teachings and not claim a religion of sorts
@TheJmpeters Do you realize the story of Christ is nearly the same as Horus & Krishna. Dude, these people are all astrological. Easter is on the Spring Equinox & Christmas is on the Winter Solstice. 12 Disciples, Virgin birth with the mother's name starting with M. The reason why others abandon the church is through research. These are stories from the Bronze Age and one plagiarized another. The bible talks about false prophets when Jesus was one and the New Testament is a sequel of Judaism. lol
David Kinnaman and Gabe Lyons have the central issue of Christ/God/Church irrelevance for younger people nailed. If theyre only interested in making money by selling more books then they will be found out. But if theyre not....then they will turn the world on its head as we know it. Exciting times if youre a Christian. I'm looking forward to more from these two guys
what is this "reason" that people talk about, how can anything produced by flawed human beings something so porous be the basis for any argument? you need to stop making reason your master because it can't explain anything fully, there is something beyond what your eyes can see and if you've got "reason" clouding your sight you wont see it

Part 3: You also state the "Nothing is dogmatic in the bible" yet you provide no support for this assertion
Sorry, but you seem to lack a basic understanding of what it means to be dogmatic
Dogma is an established belief that is considered by its adherents to be authoritative & not to be disputed, doubted, or diverged from
This is precisely what religion teaches us (i.e. "The bible says it, I believe it & that's good enough for me")

It's a new intellectual awakening. People are seeing the truth and no longer willing to except the superstitions of the past.

There is no God, so no need for a church to worship something that doesn't exist.
