I remember this song vividly though I was only 8 years in '64 when this song first came out, I still remember when the British invasion started around that time with all time greats like The Stones, The Beatles, The Who, The Zombies to name a few and all the other great pioneers of rockin roll during that era. It was a short time after President Kennedy was assassinated and the Ed Sullivan show was event to watch on T.V., a real tribute to Ray Davies and the Kinks in a time of real peace.
This was their lazy stoner persona before the sex pistol punk influence hit them by 79. And HOLY SHIT, they got excited again (cocaine) and went crazy on stage.
@MrLeeHarnett alot of people painted ther guitars back then- he probably painted it beige. and the eagle looks like a decal- it doesnt lok like it came on the guitar- its certianly not just painted on.
So lukewarm compared to the original and I think Ray Davies obsession with silly songs is evident here, there's just no effort gone into this imo, as if to say "we don't want to play this stuff anymore"
because jonas brothers are sold tp 9-16 girl category. marketing. Something the Kinks never got enough of, but that made them MORE themselves. Which makes it better to appreciate..they got to incubate.
Ray is very stripper girl here. He's good when he lets it all hang out. Those are his best songs.
lol, for further studies of "stick dropping" watch The Doors - When the music is over" (The video where they are just standing there playing) and keep a close eye at the drummer during the intro ;)
Hey, man, Densmore is such a sick drummer... he could drop his stick twenty times in one epic song like "The End" or "When the Music's Over" or "Celebration of the LIzard" and still keep it on pace, or at least save it. That's what made The Doors great, lol... but yeah, this is time for The Kinks and I would've condemned you for bringing up nearly any other band aside from The Doors on their page, so yeah, back to the music, babe.
Who knew this song even existed! I know i sure didn't, and i had seen a huge traders list with this setlist and he had no mention of it. Wow, very cool. this must be really rare.
Punks do not clap.

What guitar is ray playing ? i know its a telecaster but i carnt find tht identical one with the eagle thing and colour anywere !
MrLeeHarnett 1 year ago
@MrLeeHarnett - beige is a pretty rare colour for a tele, and the eagle may have been a sticker or a custom decal he had painted on it.

Hey, Director, that's Dave's guitar solo at 1:18, so why are having the camera operator zoom in to Ray strumming his chords?

Nice! Love this song.

On Dave's guitar solo, the cameraman goes to Ray. Dave really gets left out of this. No spotlight or anything.
OneMannFamily 1 year ago
@OneMannFamily I honestly think that the camera man is so thick that he thinks that it's Ray doing the solo and not Dave.
