Ned would later apologized to Earnhardt for cheering for Jarrett in the press box. Earnhardt replied back "Don't you ever forget I'm a Dad too." Earnhardt was a good man R.I.P
This loss wasn't as bad for Dale as 1990 but it was another setback none the less, man I hated tuning in for Daytona every year just to see him lose, I hated the commentators always picking him to win cause I thought it gave him bad luck. Thank goodness he finaly got his in 1998.
How about Jeff Gordon, huh? His 1st Daytona 500, he wins the Gatorade Duel and finishes 5th. At this time, he was only 21 years old. He was born to race. That's why he's been racing since he was 5 years old. Jeff Gordon forever!
I was only 3 when this race took place. I became a NASCAR and Dale Earnhardt fan in 2000 when he beat Bobby Labonte in Atlanta. I just saw this highlight and as an Earnhardt fan I actually teared up when Dale Jarrett won this race. How awesome is it to win one of the biggest sporting events in American History and to have your Dad call your way to victory lane. How can you not tear up after this?
I never was a very big fan of Dale Jarrett, but I still think this was one of the most magical moments in racing. It still gives me goosebumps today to hear Ned call his son home.
You really have to give Ken Squier and Neil Bonnett kudos too for stepping aside and allowing Ned to bring him home. Ned typically didn't call them home as Squier or Jenkins did, but really, there could have been no one better to make the call this day.
every time i watch this? i still cloud up!! what a GREAT DAY, for the WHOLE jarret family!! and Ned is/was always my favorite commentator.. not to mention, a past champin of the sport i LOVE. even though, i dont remember when he actually raced? i LOVE the man!! what a GREAT embassador the this sport,he must have been...
@systematicchaos I agree. Not only that. Ned Jarrett, after the race, went up to Dale Earnhardt to apologize to him for not playing it fair and before Ned could say anything, Dale said "It's ok, I'm a father too".
@snikerscamry18 lol Interminator. Earnhardt mighta been guilty quite a few times for pushin some guys out of the way, but the man wasnt stupid. If you turn someone at Daytona on purpose, especially in these days, you put their life on the line. Earnhardt was a hard ass, but he wasnt scum. Gordon, on the other hand......
In my opinion, this was the best race in NASCAR history. This race had everything: tempers (the Hillin/Petty run-in), excitement (Rusty's flip), and an incredible feel-good finish.
One thing about these old races, they were so good that although they already happened and you know whose gonna win anyway, you still root for a person as if its happening right now, that's how great NASCAR was... I hope we can return to that former glory starting in 2010.
It was a good finish. When it comes to the Daytona 500, I like to see either a past Champion who has not won it win it, or anyone else who has not won it.

man i remember watching this race wishing Ned Jarrett would STFU. how in the hell did the car lose it like that on the last lap. Why did it always have to be right at the damn end of the race, man i swear there is not another driver in any motorsport that had the relationship Dale Sr did with daytona
@romero2k dale earnhardt actually has the most ever wins at daytona. he was the best driver at daytona actaully. it was the daytona 500 is what he had a problem with. he should have atleast 5 daytona 500 wins if it wernt something happening at the end. earnhardt won the 1990 daytona 500 in my eyes
This is awesome; one of my all time favorites. Ned did an outstanding job here and made this finish so memorable. Any of us who are dads would have loved this chance to cheer on our son at their best.
I've been looking for this video FOREVER!!! Thanks so much for posting it!!! Wow, great finish, LOVE hearing Ned call it for DJ, spectacular call!! And boy, oh boy, do I miss Ned Jarrett and Benny Parsons in the broadcast booth!!!
Jeff Gordon was the highest rookie in the 500 by finishing 4th but that was the only time that rookie finish in the top 5 untill 2006 went Clint Boywer finished in the top 10.

One reason why the 1998 500 is the greatest race ever. 20th try, 19 failures for Earnhardt, and the pit road scene afterward, unbelieveable.
