It's a greek dish (which eventually spread throughout the mediterranean). In greek the G is pronounced like a hard H in english (its hard to describe the sound in words beyond that).

I only know this cause my family is greek & appreciation of our culture was considered important (ie. knowing about 300 before the comic/movie :P )
