@CONTRALTUS It sure sounds like period instruments. There are recordings out there with period instruments and men and young boys taking all of the solo roles.
@CONTRALTUS I also like it more when the beauty of the voice, clear, pure tone like Spanos's in this recording prevails. I agree with you that Spanos's version is better than Scholl's. Well, if we compare CTs' versions and not them with female singers which is incorrect in any case as they have different vocal characteristics though there are good version's on YT too, I would advise you to get the recording of Messiah of Vienna boy choir with Cencic as a soprano and Charles Humphries as a CT.
@CONTRALTUS There's a version on YT where Cencic sings "He shall feed his flock" but it's cut in the beginning. Actually it's not an aria but a duet, and Spanos here sings an alto part and later a soprano continues. But Cencic at that time sang as a soprano and in that version on YT sings the second part of the duet. Actually he has too much vibrato there but I still like it very much. Now he sings as a CT as a mezzo, and I think that he sounds much better.
@CONTRALTUS Well, it's a great choice to have Cencic on your wishlist for Christmas:-). I received DVD Sant'Alessio for my last Christmas mainly ordered because of Cencic, Sabata and Lemos and Guillon. It's a wonderful gift!:-). For this Christmas my husband ordered me Cencic's Scarlatti's cantatas. I just received it. It's a great gift too!:-). I adore Ramey too! I also dream of Spanos's singing not only alto part in Messiah but only soprano one. He has less vibrato and it would be exquisite!..
@CONTRALTUS My favorite Messiah recording is with the Toronto Symphony cnducted by Andrew Davis. The soloists are Kathleen Battle, Florence quivar, John Aler, and Samuel Ramey. Ramey's "The Trumpet Shall Sound" is positively magnificent. It's on YouTube if you want a preview. I'll vave to look up the recording with period instruments and get back to you.
@CONTRALTUS You're very welcome. The other singers are very good, too, on that Messiah recording. The "He Shall Feed His Flock" duet with Battle and Quivar is very beautiful.
@Gentario I couldn't agree more with you:-) From such an understanding, objective and harsh critic of countertenor singing it sounds just the highest compliment ever!:-)
@arpeggio1358 Absolutely! It's wonderful that more and more people all over the world are discovering for themselves this stunning artist and that RARE BEAUTY which he generously shares with us! I keep saying that there are , of course, great artists who serve the BEAUTY but Spanos is unique, not like a typical countertenor, his voice is just from a better world though some other voices also sound heavenly and sublime, and NOBODY else actually sings like him!
First rate castrato singing.

indeed, very well done. handel's word-setting isn't the best sometimes but wonderfully sung, made me give handel more respect.
