Chances are her mind will be its own reward. Anyone else think of Rita Skeeter in the Harry Potter movies? It shows what happen when trusting holiness meets analytically blunt commercial journalism
Overall the video is very well done. The commentator sounds like she does not enjoy doing this project. She borders on being insulting, but like the ignorant Wench that she obviously is, she fails to be insulting. She doesn't really have an Irish accent either! The Monks and the Monastery deserve better than that!
I think this was interesting, but also believed phrases like fake and phony were lacking in respect to what the monks are trying to achieve. I felt the narrator approached the beginning from the wrong perspective. It does not matter when the Glenstal Abby was built - it is wonderful that it was. I believe the monks conduct themselves in a noble and honourable way trying to bring something better to the sometimes flawed world we all live in.
I went to mother Ireland 3 yrs ago and I felt at home and the people of dublin made me so welcome yet they didn't my fellow english disabled m8s welcome though because of the food famine that happened 200 yrs ago but UK english people nd to read what english barons did ad literally starved the people they were meant to pay yet they died starving so plz pple of the uk think of what u say about it when in ireland as its has raw memory of what their past ancestors endured. I sobbed leaving eire
@DanielR305 No I imagine England really don't want to talk about their treatment of Ireland. The Irish were their slaves for all intent and purpose. They were England's dirty little secret-their de facto slaves. Slaves without a piece of paper saying they were slaves. And England still does not understand or refuses to see why the Irish view is -- the only good Englishman is a dead Englishman.
Ubi caritas et amore, Deus ibi est. Where there is charity and love, there God is. A very old monastic hymn.
Abbies are supposed to be self-sustaining, through sale of their works. This is long and honored tradition. In the US the monks mainly sell agricultural products.
The related Latin word Numen is the same as the Irish word cited. Brigid the great Irish goddess was seen as the rays of the sun, as they fall on and enter the earth to make it alive and fruitful.
@frbjoern Brigid was the godess I described before Ireland became Christian. There was a long period of where she was treated as both St Brigid and Brigid the old goddess.
@AnotherCuppaCoffee Sorry AnotherCuppaCoffee, I thought you were picken on our revered Saint Brigit who received her Nuns Vail Saint Mel and worked with Saint Patrick and who went into eternal rest in Kildare around AD 525. There was indeed a Pagan with in Ireland with the same name and legends about the two often get mixed up.
Its no wonder the commenter does not get it. From the view of the world monks are not practical, are not useful. Monks are an art form. The Christian monastery makes no sense except spiritually. Life would be a desert waste with no poets and dreamers, priests and prophets, monks and mystics. The world would perish without them.
The video is lovely and then theres this cynic narrating it who hasnt a clue what shes talking about. Were living in a recession and these monks teach and train priests and nuns who contribute to communities, births, deaths and the sick. Im disguisted. Who made this?
Does anyone know if there is a video about these monks that has a decent narrator? I seriously spent this whole video thinking about how much I want to knock this bitch in her mouth. She does not do these wonderful men justice at all.
Nasty comments? Those people should better be quiet... Monastic life is a great gift for our Church - if a monk remains faithful to Lord during his whole life. I as a "lay man with a Carthusian heart" really admire all faithful monks. We don't need more silly casinos, shopping malls, pubs, we need more monasteries!
The use of phrases like fake and phony and disneyland is grossly offensive. If the journalist had come with an open heart and a desire for spirituality, then she would have had a life changing experience. I go there every year for a few days. I rise at 5.30 am to join the monks in the start of their day of service. It is a wonderful experience. A few days at Glenstal will change your life. Furthermore, it costs nothing but a small donation to cover your keeping.
@Vince1303 But things like god, spirits, and the devil are all fake, so anything based on any of those things, including this Abbey, would be classified as "fake". All that aside, as a person with Irish heritage, and a atheist, I feel I would also feel strong emotions if I where to ever visit. I love my heritage, even if I don't agree with all of it.

Pre-Christian spirituality is pure pagan. The druids were hated and feared. Figure it out for yourselves, why the Irish en masse followed the teachings of St. Patrick and with such zeal. Don't bring the snakes back!!! - Rene
Gosh the last thing I want to do is tell a lie. There's enough mis-information going down and I don't want to add to that. But let me ask you, what happened between the Druids and St. Patrick on the Hill of Slane when Patrick defied them and lit a fire. and also why did St. Caillin
(Feastday: November 13th 7th century)
A bishop associated with St. Aidan of Ferns, Ireland condemn them? - Blessings - Rene
Since I wasn't there and neither were you, the accounts vary. What is very, very clear is that the romans and the Christians wrote history in their favor. Recent digs are finding a very different story. You have chosen to believe the Romans and the holy christians. That is a personal choice. I choose to take a look at history and what these groups did to indigenous people. I have chosen to believe very little of what they would like me to believe. The Christians were not very holy or honest.
Narrator from ABC Australia. No doubt a great, great, great, great granddaughter of an Irishman who stole a loaf of bread for his family and was transported to the Antipodes for his troubles, passing on the chip on his shoulder that this lovely applies to her observations.
This same monastery has elected a monk as their leader who doesn't believe in the Real Presence. They are a disgrace and doing nothing to build up the already broken Church in Ireland - Rene
@frbjoern - He said so himself on RTE when they did a programme on him when he was elected. He experienced his conversion on a "fairy hill" near his home. He said he could feel the power coming up from the earth! It may have been one of those "Would you believe" programmes. If you find it let me know. I don't like to not be sure of my facts but I do remember my heart sink in my boots when he said that. - Blessings - Rene
@mammyoriordan I cannot imagine Catholic clergy saying something like that. Isn't it amazing? Catholics clergy can deny the Divinity of our blessed Lord Jesus and His completed Atoning sacrifice on the Cross for us as clearly recorded in Holy Scripture and it doesn't to create any major stir. But deny the newer doctrines of Papal Infallibility and Papal supremacy and every one gets bent out of shape and your a sure candidate for excommunication!!
I am the only one who has some issues here? The "table" instead of an altar? Ugly stained glass, a Christ with small arms? Their chapel looks very mundane, cold?
Funny, I always thought it was about faith and a personal relationship with your maker, not how fancy and expensive a building is furnished where you are supposed to be seeking enlightenment! Well I guess ive been missing the whole true meaning of God and worship all these years!
No your not the only one. You, me and the Pope have issues here and that is why the Pope has invited 500 artists to the Vatican to talk about liturgical art. - Blessings - Rene

The Barringtons did not give the castle to the monks - they sold it on and it was given to the monks later. jbreenw doesn't know all his facts - and also proves that money does not beget manners.
actually, they left it to the catholic church. and the monks took it over in 1928... it was the barrington's intention for the church to have it. and don't you dare accuse me of not having manners. and by the way, a lot of people in my school DO actually make sacrifices to go there. YOU are an ignorant pig.
No they did not leave it to the Catholic Church, they had no idea that the Catholic Church had an interest in it; and the monks did not take over in 1928 but 1927.

no, I'M JW... somebody hacked my old account and used my name. I am really sorry about that but I've deleted my old account now and changed it to this one. I would never be stupid enough to refer to somebody from the school online. I'm sorry you don't remember me well enough to think I would have the gall to do that. Please do not ask me any further, this is intensely embarrassing and not the first time I've been targeted online either.
if you are... I bet you are! :P your name makes sense... sorry for calling you an ignorant pig cos like, obviously you're not. but hey I'm not the least mannered person to have gone through inter house am I?
Of course not, all the students are wonderful - but could you just get your facts right BEFORE you call someone else stupid in public? And don't call people stupid in public!!
I agree with the comments even though I live in South America. What's the problem with a group of men selling a book?. If you don't like it, just don't buy the book. They also have the right to earn their daily bread. I wonder what would've happened if the interview had been made to a drugs dealer who lives on destroying the human society...
Who ever the film makers were started going the wrong way with this aroung 10:30, there is not a single thing that these monks are doing that conflict or damage the Church as a whole.
And all Abbeys have a hierarchy, they are called Abbots.
I feel this video was made very much with "attitude" in the negative sense. I don't see that it has served any great purpose. I feel and fear that maybe the Monks that were involved in the making of this video may not like the way they have been represented in the finished production. I feel if harm wasn't intended, there is still a danger that more harm than good will come out of the making of this video. Very bias view point. Maybe it wasn't intended, but I do fear an anti irish bias as well.
Some of the information on this video is incorrect for example: the castle was built in 1839 not '80' years ago; the Benedictines at Glenstal are not the only Benedictine monks in Ireland.
The Reporter is Jennifer Byrne - an Australian Journalist. It is her usual presentation.
