If you are a lifetime -.300 hitter and have hit - 3,000 hits and have been playing - 15 years and have pretty much been guaranteed admission to the Hall of Fame then how can you be over-rated? So what is meant by "over-rated?". Would he be overrated if he earned half of his salary? I think that most people who call him overrated are between the ages of 10-20 years. And I think any over the age of 22 (about, those ages are give or take a couple of years) don't think he is overrated because they grew up watching Jeter when he was good... now Jeter isn't very good at all and all the young people are like "Why do people think this guy is good?"

Before the 2010 season I could agree with you, but not anymore. Back then, Jeter's great bat was able to cover for his marginal defense. Now, Jeter can barely hit .260 but his defense did not improve.
Derek Jeter is vastly overrated. If he was on any other team, he would not be a starting player, let alone a starting shortstop. He is the worst defensive shortstop in the league, and that's not opinion, it's based off factual statistics. He has the range of a high school shortstop, and his fielding percentage is awful, yet he wins gold glove after gold glove because his name is Derek Jeter. Troy Tulowitzki, Hanley Ramirez, and Jose Reyes are about 100x better than Jeter is today.

At the ripe age of 27, Derek Jeter was a great player, and probably a top 3 shortstop offensively, and defensively, but at age 37, Derek Jeter would not start at shortstop on any team in the Major Leagues, other than the Yankees. I would honestly say the shortstop for my high school team has more range than Derek Jeter (mind you he's going D1), but still, he's a high schooler.
3000 is a great achievement no doubt, but he is definitely overrated.
An entire career in pinstripes won't help his legacy, neither will the fact he never "carried" a team to a World Championship, therefore he will go down in history as a good shortstop, but not a GREAT one.

But Derek Jeter will FOREVER be the symbol of how the game is played right and was he determined to win every damn year so much that he helped his team to 13 straight Postseasons, 7 Fall Classics, winning 5 of them. you cant say a guy who has hit 3003 career hits is over rated. Yeah in the last few years he has slowed down but what player hasnt. Look at his past great plays from the relay throw from the 01 ALCS, to him catching a ball and flying into the stands...he is one of the best and selfless fielders of all time

If you are a lifetime -.300 hitter and have hit - 3,000 hits and have been playing - 15 years and have pretty much been guaranteed admission to the Hall of Fame then how can you be over-rated? So what is meant by "over-rated?". Would he be overrated if he earned half of his salary? What if the question were "Which shortstop would you have wanted to start on your team over the last 15 years?" I wonder how many MLB players would have chosen Jeter.

actually he can hit .324 and 24 homeruns, look at his stats, he's been consistent, but his stats don't show that his actual play hasn't been amazing

OVERRATED????? You must be kidding. Jeter's a hall of famer, class act, multi-time world champion, and captain of the world's most successful sports franchise. 3000 hits. Even red sox fans and the most hateful yankee-haters respect him. The man will go down as one of the best to ever play the game. Anybody who says he's overrated has no credibility whatsoever. I think that most people who call him overrated are between the ages of 10-20 years. And I think any over the age of 22 (about, those ages are give or take a couple of years) don't think he is overrated because they grew up watching Jeter when he was good... now Jeter isn't very good at all and all the young people are like "Why do people think this guy is good?"

@guywalker29 A-rod may need surgery, you don't fake that. And Jeter isn't really hurt, but he can let his leg heal, because even after an injured player comes off the DL, there injury is still at risk. I wrestled for my school, and I injured my arm. When I felt better, I went in to practice, and my partner practiced a move on me, and my armed popped. It popped so badly, my partner felt it. Now, its a year later, and I still have issues with it. Jeter needs to give it rest.

The truth of the matter is every player in the MLB knows Jeter and A-Rod believe themselves above the pack. Manny Being Manny and then there's Jeter and A-Rod. The list goes on. In the next 5 years the yanks are gonna be all farm system youngsters. We got Cano, Gardner, Phil Hughes, Cervelli, Nunez, David Robertson, and a lot of good prospects in the minors. Before the 2010 season I could agree with you, but not anymore. Back then, Jeter's great bat was able to cover for his marginal defense. Now, Jeter can barely hit .260 but his defense did not improve.
Right now, Derek Jeter is overrated.
Career-wise, Derek Jeter is fairly rated.

Derek Jeter is vastly overrated. If he was on any other team, he would not be a starting player, let alone a starting shortstop. He is the worst defensive shortstop in the league, and that's not opinion, it's based off factual statistics. He has the range of a high school shortstop, and his fielding percentage is awful, yet he wins gold glove after gold glove because his name is Derek Jeter. Troy Tulowitzki, Hanley Ramirez, and Jose Reyes are about 100x better than Jeter is today.

@nairblin Yeah that's for their careers. I am talking about today, Derek Jeter is the most overrated player in baseball. At the ripe age of 27, Derek Jeter was a great player, and probably a top 3 shortstop offensively, and defensively, but at age 37, Derek Jeter would not start at shortstop on any team in the Major Leagues, other than the Yankees. I would honestly say the shortstop for my high school team has more range than Derek Jeter (mind you he's going D1), but still, he's a high schooler.

3000 is a great achievement no doubt, but he is definitely overrated.
An entire career in pinstripes won't help his legacy, neither will the fact he never "carried" a team to a World Championship, therefore he will go down in history as a good shortstop, but not a GREAT one.

But Derek Jeter will FOREVER be the symbol of how the game is played right and was he determined to win every damn year so much that he helped his team to 13 straight Postseasons, 7 Fall Classics, winning 5 of them. Derek Jeter "was" great. He got the 3000 hits but he is past his time.Is he still good enough to play in the pros? I wouldnt consider him now the best SS in the game but for a long time he was. He was the epitone for a power shortstop. Tall, great arm, great defense, could hit, hit for power and could run.
