Can Turks and Kazakhs understand each other? Are they similar languages?

They are similar languages (Turkic) but not mutually intelligible. However, Azerbaijan and Turkey Turks understand each other quite well. Turkmenistan Turkish is also quite intelligible. These three are Oghuz Turkish. But the same cannot be said for Kazakh, Uzbek, Tatar (Kazan). However, any speaker of a Turkic langauge will be able to understand 70-80% of another Turkic language if he/she spends 2 months on it, because the grammar is the same and words are very similar.
