@gypsykingg you ever seen the f-8 crusader? ugly and big, but nimble as shit!!! had it been given more test and more prototype models been ordered the x-32 might have won. f-35 innovative but its biggest problem is stovl version and if it is canceled like what former defense secretary Robert Gates said could happen if the problems aren't fixed, the marine corp is fucked until the next round of fighters. so work with what you know works, save innovations for research
@craigdragon17 Lets also not forget that the only reason the X-32 didn't win by default was because the JSF program gave Lockeed a free pass after they went seriously over budget on their prototype, when by rights they should have been DQ'd.
Who came up with this shape?! I mean from a psychological standpoint alone... If I were a MiG-35/ Su PAK-FA pilot and I saw this in my airspace, I'd probably wager my buddies: first one to fire anything into that huge, ridiculous intake wins the collective prize $
@MrAndyBones One of the requirements set by the DoD said that the plane had to have a single engine as opposed to two. Instead of two separate intakes (like the X/F-35) Boeing took the single "mouth" approach, like the F-16. It's a good plane, but had the same safety faults like the Harrier, which is why it lost to the X-35.
This plane lost the comp because the intake was too close to the ground to make a safe carrier landing ( it was likely that it would hit on the deck). There was also the risk of FOD damage.
I have to admit. Why do all expermental aircraft have to look this fugley. I am glad they made the f-35 its f-22 look otherwise if I saw this shit I would just laugh. Look it even has a smile to tell the pilot behind him your fucked.
All the specs on this bird beat out the lockheed version, engine, flight dynamics, weapons platform, agility, and cost - lockheed won because of looks-
@viperops169 Your wrong. The X-32 lost because it couldn't fly supersonic and perform a vertical landing all on the same flight. In order to do the vertical landing the X-32 had to have parts removed and without those parts it couldn't fly at supersonic speed. It also didn't meet some spec requirements for the navy because of its delta wing design. I like the body of this bird a lot better then locheed martin's bird though.
yes. the bottom section of the intake duct was removed for these tests. im sure that there are pics on the 'net that show this plane with the ductwork complete.
The way i see it, Boeing makes great transports, gunships, and helis. No one can match the Apache Longbow, it's a peice of flying art. this, on the other hand...
X-35 is still no where near ready for production. If the X-32 had been chosen we'd have them service flying missions today. The competition should've been extended another year, At least.
All the X-35's flaws have come to light since they won the competition, Lockheed kept them hidden very well. Ducted fan hovering is not very maneuverable and is very very high maintenance.
I think that this plane should have one even if it was one truly fugly machine unlike the X-35 the X-32 didnt have that 8,000 pound dead wate, the X-32s vertical take of was based off of the AV-8.
The X-32 had a lot of problems and maneuverabiliy was slow. While hovering, the X-32 had some pop stalls and some other problems. That's why it wasn't chosen. The F-35 kind of crushed the X-32 in performance. I also think the X-32 looks too fat.
Dunno about the f23 vs f22, that one was pretty damn close... from what i heard, the f22 was more maneuverable, but the f23 was slightly faster and stealthier... and it looked damn awesome. that one was close, but i'm not complaining. how can one complain about the f22?
the x32 on the other hand...
no contest. f35 wins hands down. i don't want a flying bathtub as america's next gen strike fighter.
The F-32 may potentially have been better, but that was quite a redesign from the X-32 prototype.
The X-32 suffered a number of issues.
One was that it was overweight. In order to hover, a lot of parts were stripped including the intake cowling and landing gear doors.
The X-35B's "mission X" played no small part in the final decision. The X-35B performed a short take off, supersonic dash and vertical landing in one sortie.
However, the X-35B was not overweight to the extent that it seriously interfered with the JSF fly-off competition.
It wasn't just about weight either. The X-32 just wasn't a very complete design. There is a reason why the F-32 design that was finally submitted was a rather different looking aircraft.
the best jsf concept by far was the northrop/Bae concept (a baby YF 23)but the airforce killed it cause it would compete with the F-22 in the air to air role :( So now lockheed martin is the exclusive provider of manned stealth fighters to the west and its allies for the forseeable future.tell me this is just a coincidence!
Yes I heard that the X-35 at the time consistently outperfroming the X-32. Yes they both met or exceeded al requirements but I'm sure we made the right choice.
How much did boeing spend on this aircraft??? what happens if they want to keep going with the project and sell it to someone interested on it to save some of that money? I don´t see how it´s inferior to the X-35
ahh ok, the US government payed for all the development, so that means they can´t sell the X-32 either... sad it would have been nice to see it flying somewhere around the world anyway. Thanx for the info
the yf 23 was in fact better but far more expensive to produce than the f22. its stealth was even more efficient and at the risk of sounding too presumptuous i'd say the U.S. military just went with the cheaper option to not empty their wallets.
yeah. at least lockheed came up with a completely new system. which seems to work better. and, when you go to forward flight, they can dis-engage the forward lift fan and that stops it from robbing the engine of any power during forward flight. with the 32, you always have the same resistance which requires more power to do the same job.

very true. as you can see, they had to remove the chin cowl to allow for vertical landings, which prevented it from going super sonic.

Not so new, it was inspired by the one which equipped the Russian Yakovlev Yak-38 and later the Yak-141 about 20 years ago.

The vertical flight looks very stable, i think the pilot gets supported by massive computing power in that flight phase?

Actually, it's strange appearance is due to combining stealth with a system like the harrier's. The X-32 is quite stealthy.
