wonder if they still do this today that would be a cool sight to see the whole regiment draw swords and do a charge maybe for the queens 90th birthday?
if the intfantry wielding the bayonet, was properly organised into the correct formations with the right amount of courage and dicepline they could turn a cavelry charge away and wittle down the numbers slowly, and the sword wouldnt be much use.
cavelry is designed for suprise shock attacks then withdrawles so they can charge again, the idea is to break the enemy lines and cause panic then route them from the field of battle.
I was There also! Fantastic time. Imagine being in the middle of those horses charging you and the massed bands later on in the show. One of the best experiences of my life!
I was on one of the corners of the square.
Shame about the ND, nobody could blame the fella, the rifles sears were so worn, that you could sneeze and it'd go off!
I still have the program and thank you letter from the producer (Captain Jim Parker. The same guy who wrote the 'Soldier, Soldier' theme I think).
you know i was always convinced of that but recently i;ve seen him a few times and he's starting to look more like charles- the eyes have that same slightly goofy look
You remember Princess Diana was supposed to have had a fling with a certain Capt Hewitt in the Household Calvary? Is the commander of the troop here the same Capt Hewitt?
The twat who decided to end the Royal tournament should have been publicly stoned in the middle of the arena...and i mean pass me a bag of gravel type stoning not joint type stoned :)
That cavalry charge was brilliant! I keep watching it over and over again, the riders, with swords drawn, in such a confined area, must have some brilliant expertise.
This should be brought back. It might even give the BBC a bit of credibility, what do you get on TV nowadays, rubbish reality tv shows, nothing of quality.
@TheDentist27 Immigration has and continues to make England a great country. This has been an ever changing country for hundreds of years. The Royal Tattoo continues to be held in Edinburgh every year. Culture is everywhere in this country, a lot of people shut themselves of from it because they dislike it.
WOW! I just came across this while searching Youtube. I was one of the Army Cadets that were recruited to play the part of the infantry. I am part of the group with the Pith helmets. Brought back lots of fond memories of this event. Would love to know where to get a copy of this video here in Canada.
Wow, what a great video. This is what i loved about the Royal Tournament. It combined history with pageant and entertainment. Most of the tattoos today are a poor imitation of this great show. I always found the RT to be the most British of shows, and was fortunate to see it a few times before its final demise in 1999.
Couldn't help but notice that the officer commanding the Household Cavalry was none other than one Captain James Hewitt (later Major, and of Princess Diana fame (or infamy) . . . )
Trumpeter was Cpl Hempseed.
