He didn't 'get' the Black Reign gimmick. He collaborated with Vince Russo to create the Black Reign character. I liked it, personally. He just wasn't booked very well. Wound up losing far too much, which devalued the character after awhile. A bit like how Goldust is handled today, actually.
It's official. Goldust was the Joker. PERIOD. He had you freaked from his rationale, in the ring he was a vicious demon in the ring and he had a hottie (Marlena) as manager. He was the Joker...period
I still remember watching the Goldust vs. Razor Ramon matches as a kid. Ramon's uneasiness with Goldust definitely showed itself in the ring. I had no idea he actually had an issue with him at the time.
I feel bad that when I was a little kid I was dumb and didn't know better but let queer heat get the best of me (the south lol) . At least now I know better and realize the company was just selling to its audience.
Dustin should take all the credit in the world for hte Golddust character. It took alot of guts to do this angle when it was alot more accepted to me homophobic than it is today and even though he was never a great champion hes a guy you would never forget. I remember Goldust when i was a kid and hes just an unforgetable character

@JeffGodking: Try Elton John (1970s version, since both Elton & Goldie have both been watered down since Elton came out as legit gay & the man under the gold-black facepaint came out as your average family man, much like his common-man-living-the-American-Dream father).
Goldust was easily one of the best heels, especially late 95 into 96. His character was very bizarre but intriguing and the man knew how to wrestle. His feuds with Razor, Ahmed Johnson, Piper, and even Undertaker are very memorable. Very underrated but I think he did a great job. I hope he comes back and at WM28 has a match with Cody - that will definitely be an awesome match!
Golddust and Jake The Snake Roberts were two of the best at the psychological aspect of wrestling. They could get into your head quicker than Freud. They both also had superb wrestling skills.
Dustin was also brilliant in the brief but often forgotten period where he changed his name to The Artist Formerly Known as Goldust and dressed up in crazy outfits like a baby's diaper.
Goldust?!!? Never been done before?!!? What about Exotic Adrian Street, Dusty? There's more precedents in wrestling, but Street is the closest in form.
None of them were the same combination of elements. Goldust started out as movie-obsessed, but as the character turned more androgynous, he began turning his trademark movie quote promos into veiled innuendo. Every time the audience would start to peg him as 'that gay guy', he'd add a new element to the mix and throw them off-guard, again. None of the previous 'gay' wrestlers had anything going on beyond the mere fact that they were gay.
@ShatteredDreamsProd1 Adrian Street and Gorgeous George were consummate showmen and performers. They were also legit bad asses who could slaughter anyone who got fresh. They were pioneers in the USA and Great Britain and certainly had much more than simple gay characters.
This is why I never really respected Dusty Rhodes. Because he's lieing out his ass here. Everyone knows he was ashamed of Dustin when he brought out Goldust and didn't talk to him legit for almost 3 years. His opinion may have changed over the years but everyone knows he disowned his own son and to hear him talking it up now kinda makes me sick.
The rift between Dusty and Dustin happened before Goldust was ever created. It was over personal issues. Particularly the simple fact that Dusty just plain didn't like Terri/Marlena. And that was his wife. So naturally that caused a fair bit of tension.
@SimplyXxXWild Why would Dusty not talk to his son? As a legend of the business himself, wouldn't he realize the fact that Dustin took a shot with this outrageous gimmick, got it over with some of the biggest heel heat in the business and made it last so long was a testament to true talent?
@SimplyXxXWild dont respect dusty? this man has done more for the wrestling business than most anyone, behind the scenes he helped run wcw for a lot of years, its sad that when it came down to it, Turner didnt trust the business anymore in the hands of wrestlers, so he was kind of disrespectfully kicked to the curb, felt bad for the guy.
1958 is when WWWF was founded. It's the pre-roll that runs at the beginning of the Legends of Wrestling program. Some kind of hiccup with the digital broadcast.
Ironic talking about Gay icons in wrestling. Pat Patterson buggered as many wrestlers as he could. I got nowt against gay people. But Patterson should be melted down and fed to depraved pigs.
Dustin played the character well but it's almost impossible to push gay buttons so blatantly in a sport that's already (subliminally) gay enough.
Lanny Poffo did it the best, and worked the best as a manager. And he certainly wasn't as out-front gay as Dustin is here. He just did ballet and gymnastics in the ring and ACTED gay. Big difference from TALKING gay.
I remember back in 1997 some kid told me that's Dustin Rhodes. I was like no way. He was like oh yeah ask my big brother. Big Brother comes in and says yeah that's Dustin Rhodes from WCW look at the hair and body. They were right.
I'm sure he has. But the present era of wrestling has devalued the championships so much, his 9 reigns barely equal 1, in my book. It's like championship inflation.
@ShatteredDreamsProd1 I couldn't agree more. For example, booker's 5 time was a serious trophy. To be the champ you had to fight against 10 guys back than. Now it's just 2-3 people headlining every ppv. Not surprising each dude has had the belt 9+ times.
@TheShootTruth10 This gimmick is his greatest accomplishment. At the end of the day, it means way more than any IC title reign. He was always over. He always got a reaction. He was simply awesome. It broke him away from his dad and made him his own man. Dustin Runnels is a future Hall of Famer on his own legs.
@JonasDygd Not only did he get over, but then he came back years later and got over AGAIN. Who can forget those segments with Booker T? Great stuff. And he worked great as a heel and a face.
Goldust is badass! I remember he was one tough ass opponent again ramone, piper, and johnson. I can understand why some thought the character was gay. But to clarify his character, he was know as "The Bizarre One". Why? because he played unusual mind games with his opponents, he was obsessed with the theatrical world and motion pictures. He was also obsessed with perfection. His gold appearance is actually a mock up of the academy award golden man. They character is not gay, he's just damn weird
He's tried 2 get back 2 being Dustin Rhodes/Runnels on several occasions (WWF/WWE,TNA,Elsewhere)...Even wrestled in Japan as "Dusty Rhodes,Jr"...Dusty was/is right...Is just didn't doesn't work w/o the Goldust stuff...
The "Natural" Dustin Rhodes or Goldust the guy is just a phenomenal talent. He made it in NY where his legendary father didn't, at least in the VKM era. He deserved a world title reign. Better than Jericho and up there with Orton. Better than Cena & Batista. Better than Kane and better than swagger.
@ShatteredDreamsProd1 Well, to be fair on THQ, they're still including him in WWE 12, despite him being out since LAST year, so I think they do like Goldust.
I think Goldust was what Vince McMahon's thoughts of Hollywood.
