  • can I use the novation 25 slmkII to control dj software? well i know i can but how do I map it? i'm using VDJ 7 and Avid torq 1.5/2.0 Im not sure how to map and save different page for fxs, transport and mixer... how to map the touchpad so it works like m-audio xponent's pad... please help!!!!!

  • OMG, I never heard of controllerism, I am a video controllerist, just looking at my desk I have have 7 controllers plugged in... I only came across this because I was about to pull apart an old oxigin 8 and I was ggogeling to see if anyone else had.

  • UR A MONSTER MOLDOVER...CONGRATS

  • what kind of controller is he using?

  • he just made the apc40

  • i love you!!!lol

  • greetz from malta, europe!! marvelous work keep rocking :D you are created a movement for digitalists & controllerists all around the globe!

  • well or you can sell it and buy another controller more acurate to your needs . sry not too cool with the idea of chopping a controller like that. perhaps is couse where i live those are not cheap at all =P

  • it looks to me like the "black keys" that are mapped to the mute buttons are functioning like a gate with key on unmuting and key off muting. anyone know how he did this?

  • Why not just learn to work with the design of the controller? Or for that matter get one with trigger pads if you wanted it to be more tactile?

  • I liked not so much for the modding, but for the mapping. I have a Trigger Finger, so I *already* have four rows of rubber buttons with corresponding aligned knobs. In Ableton, mapping is everything.

  • awesome- thanks for the video Moldover.!

  • Trash. Smoke some more pot and go hang out at Bagatelle Brunch.

  • I have a better name. How about, "Retardist". More specifically, "Texan with no musical sensibility that should go home to Mom and Dad and learn to play banjo.

  • great. thanks for the tipps !

  • Dude one thing about him chopping up the deck, is that he's makes it easier to perform live.... In that environment it is key to visually have consistency. so yeah he chopped up a $100 controller, but made it an instrument for live performances.

Moldover is one of the fathers of controllerism... plus he is an Ableton, guru... much respect

  • Found out about controllerism today..

    i hate playing the turntables

    but LOve Producing

    So this is iT!

    Moldover.. RESPECT!

  • he' sacrificing lots of keys just to have like 10 of them close together in a pattern.. why not just use all 25? instead of white black white black for like 10 buttons?

  • could he not have done all that without fuckin up his controller???

  • you remind me a bit of bam margera

  • wow

he just ruined a $100 keyboard controller

  • What are you talking about? Look at all that controller real estate! He can stick like, a mini joystick in there or... an XY pad or... faders. Whatever he wants!

  • do you guys know what monitors those are at 0:38?

  • funny that people like to stick in their box. saying for example turntablism involves more skill is the same thing musicians said about turntablism.

in actual fact its something completely different. you can do things on turntables that you cant do on regular instruments and you can do things with ableton live and a decent midi controller set up that you can't do on turntables. get over your old sets of beliefs.

  • I'd like to add to that that it is a completely different skillset. Controllerism is 50% setup. the music is pretty much already made, you just use what's already there to do whatever you feel. More manipulation than actual creating. That's the same with turntables, only even less setup and even less of your own vibe to it. With actual instruments it's all skill and soul all the way. But for some it doesn't involve creating anything what so ever. Depends on if you write your own stuff or not.

  • Damn it all! I just wanted to make boring ass kick ass music but now you've gone and frazzled my brain good. Am I gonna have to crack-ass my own controllers now...? Me thinks yes.

    You're so F#%^*&ing cool.

  • moldover and tim exile = grandfathers of controlerism... BIG RESPECT!!!

  • MOLDOVER ROCKS!!! You gots to see him live. He brings down da house and I think he has great hair.

  • MTV is apparently making relevant content! Mad props Moldover, all the haters prove you are doing something right!

  • kRK ? 0:14

  • HAIRCUT

  • yo but the soft ware ? how dou u conect it all

  • plug it into ableton and let that do the rest... ha, its not that easy but they have some really good ableton tutorials if you are curious.

  • First, you don't need to modify your controller, just plug it in your computer via firewire or usb and assign the keys to whatever you want in ableton live.

  • why didnt u just leave it alone....that makes no sense

  • Like 90% of all the comments here are from ppl who really don't care about electronic music and creating music electronically &/or from sampling etc.

It's an interesting way to make a cheap controller.

Yes you can do all this on the computer, but by being able to record it live like an actual instrument, you get a lot more feel and passion to it.

Having knobs is an excellent thing that you don't really get in say a tenori-on or monome.

This is a "Real instrument", it's just new and weird.

  • yeah but it allready was a cheap controller before !! .. why destroying it makes it better ?

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHA what the fuck? what a stupid gimmick and what horrid sounding audio. more sterile , soulless, mundane shit peddled by MTV

  • coool, :)

  • Are you fucking kidding me right now...

Use a normal fucking controller - kill yourself.

I don't deny your musical talent man - you have skill, no more than any other musician, but skill none the less.

But you need to stop pretending you're doing anything better/different from anyone else. Jesus. Stop.

  • where's YOUR controller then mate? Maybe this guy effed up a perfectly fine controller, but the fact is he made it his OWN. I'm sure NO ONE is going to do this to their controllers, but the fact that this bloke took the time out of his day to show you how he makes music his own, shows that he is more driven to experiment and probably fail, rather than make do.

Show us YOUR stuff or just shut the hell up.

  • i am "stupid" enough to do this.

think when you have a 145 bpm live set going

4 controllers, a mixer a one billion of knobs keys and things to get confused in a got damn DARK club, and 5 vodka doses in the head.

i can ASSURE you this "layout" helps.

  • Actually i know people who have done this to their controller. The idea behind rearanging the keys to suit your setup actually has alot going for it. You dont have to have them layed out like Moloder does.

  • He removed shit he won't use. He can now play quickly and efficiently. If guitars only were sold with 18 strings but you only needed 6 you would modify it. Just because the music he creates and the WAY he creates it doesn't fit in your box how you "think" stuff should be doesn't make it wrong.

  • great!

  • terrible. absolutely nothing stops you from doing the same thing with a fully intact midi controller. pure gimmick crap.

  • y..e..a..

  • no honestly, what the fuck?

  • what the fuck?

  • THis is old skool! We were doin' this back in '88 when money was tight. It's great to share this though, brings back memories..

  • wow, cool!!!!

  • MorphingCaesar2

The BEST pranker and comedian EVER!

Did you see his shit yet? You should! :D

    You'll find them amusing! MORPHINGCAESAR2

  • Charlatan

    n.

A person who makes elaborate, fraudulent, and often voluble claims to skill or knowledge; a quack or fraud.

I must say well done. Not content with fulfilling the "electronica/IDM twat with a laptop" cliche, you choose to build on this by *hacking equipment*.

Do you think if I took a few buttons off my T.V remote or broke the ariel on my radio they would work better? How does moving the buttons/keys on a midi controller constitute customisation?

  • Anyone who has more than a slight knowledge about these subjects can dismiss your fraudulence out of hand, and recognise how easy what you're doing is. However your average pundit doesn't have a clue about music software or, more importantly, midi controllers, and you're taking advantage of their ignorance.

  • Wow timmyod, your vid on your channel is pretty groundbreaking. Are you sure that you're not the "electronica/IDM twat with a laptop" cliche?" If you watch moldover's other videos, the guy is a real musician, playing guitar, drums, and keys as well as sample and loop stuff. If you've noticed that he never responds to anyone's comments, it's because he's too busy making new music and ideas while you are doing what? oh, a 1:20 POS called the sweary song. what an artist you are.

  • do you know what a strawman argument is?

Being a real musician or not doesnt excuse nonsense like this. any real musician wouldn't be such a sham. Do you know much about this subject or how easy it is to do what he's doing?

  • Agreed.

The things he actually is doing is done through a midi controller anyway. The only real engineering he did was changing the layout of keys and put some rubber on them!

the keyboard is still doing midi functions! not audio. He just changed the hardware arrangement.

    Lame ass vid.

  • no shit.

you dont make audio with turntables either, he just changes the layout to what suits him best.

  • hear hear. if anything he's limiting his scope for control. what a phoney. turntablism actually involves a degree of skill

  • Damn right

  • 看着挺强的.

  • i can make that without even breaking my midi-controller :)

  • moldover, you fail.

redundant procedure, ruining a not-so-cheap piece of equipment.

can anyone explain WHY?! what has been achieved?

  • this is shaming. all that could have been achieved by leaving the midi controller intact. what a fraudulent fool. i think i might go put some go faster stripes on my car. gee wizz.

  • deff not like turntablism. M audio makes a midi pad that does this u dont need to make ur own. I even used a DM2 controller for midi before. this is usless.

  • go fuck your self shithead !!

  • You got me interested. I saw you at burning man, found your website on Stumble, and now front page of YouTube. Being on the front page also explains the many well thought out comments by the lovely masses. Hope to hear more from you.

  • this dude is a cock sucker

  • fucking n00b

  • Is it just me or did he just take apart a perfectly good $100 keyboard for no fucking reason?

You can still use it as a controller without completely dismantling the poor thing.

  • im a controllerist i jerk off with one hand and play cheesey shit music with the other i take apart things and move them around slap some elmers glue and a dirty rubber on some keys to make it more sticky and call myself cool also all my beats effects sounds and notes are time synced so there is no way to make my shit music sound bad so everyone loves me and im tv for inventing the word controllerist and or ism i think this world really needs to rethinkify music if this is what its come to

  • No need to line the stuff up...practice and it'll workin just fine without destroyin the controler

  • UH<<? yeah, so why do you need to take it apart again??

  • exactly...why??

  • Instead of wasting your money on destroying perfectly good keyboards, you might want to consider spending your money on a few music lessons.

  • True. lol

  • yeah, theres no point really in taking a MIDI controller apart.

ALl he really did was remove some keys and stick some pads on, to make it more "tactile",

but you can just get a M audio trigger finger if you want finger drum pads

  • Yea.

  • Great job, your good at that.

  • hey

  • The ultimate crash course how to abuse sound. It's hell a lot more importen to learn how to mix old fashion beats together to sounds good. And leave out those Dr frankenstein epileptic sound.

  • i think its hilarious that theres no fricking point to taking it apart.

  • well, he only did that so that the keys would match up with the knobs, even though that wasnt that necessary

  • This is kinda weird. Modifying a keyboard to kinda act like an MPC but but with knobs added.

  • Very well explained, except for the part with assigning keys :)

  • BK contolerism

  • cool guy..

  • Moldover?

  • yeah.. your 'mod' was just rearranging some keys, and taking others away.

  • Hey-I'll pass this on to my bf! I think he'd like it!

  • no need to destroy your controller. just use colored stickers :|

  • ha ha its funny he never thought of that

  • keep up the good work! thats the illshit!

  • what program do u use for this???!!!

  • it's Ableton Live.

  • ableton. It's awesome for assigning midi controls quickly and messing about with stuff. So simple to use!

  • Diarrhea into a wine glass. Sip the diarrhea slowly, making sure that any chunks stay in the glass. After doing this, you will vomit. Vomit onto a plate of your family members dinner. Make them eat the vomit dinner while you urinate in their hair. After they eat the vomit dinner and puke, stick your tongue into the vomit stream, then diarrhea into their nostril. Massage the spilled diarrhea from their nostril onto their chest. Make designs in the chest diarrhea with your tongue.

  • WTF? thats disgusting

please dont go posting something like that on a bunch of videos.

  • Hey go easy on this guy. I liked video it was fun to watch. He could have a future and Microsoft taking what already worked fine and chopped it up and just totally wasted an otherwise functioning keyboard. Kind of like taking a Ferrari and making it into a badass Golf Cart. Why??!!

  • The added value of this is almost 0 since he is just removing keys and putting some markings on the keyboard.

  • Good video. Also check out the new show on You Tube called Brians Basement. It's really different from what we normally watch. If you like it please subscribe.

  • You don't need to take apart a MIDI keyboard at all to do that.

  • Nope, not good. Sad u waisted ur precious time on this. Better luck next time, right?

Peace, dickhead. Have a nice life!

  • I love the "How To Show" intro music. Genesis does too :)

  • Excellent how-to. Thanks, Moldover.

  • controllerism eh? what will they think of next!~~

  • alternatively scratch step 1 and eh well this useless video really

  • he has to take step 3 again -.-'

  • 1. turn your midi controler to a crap

    2. enjoy your self

  • 3. cry

  • Agreed.

The things he actually is doing is done through a midi controller anyway. The only real engineering he did was changing the layout of keys and put some rubber on them!

the keyboard is still doing midi functions! not audio. He just changed the hardware arrangement.

    Lame ass vid.

  • cool!!

  • that was pretty cool but... was tearing apart the midi controller necessary?

  • pretty cool!

  • yup

  • Digital! May sound impressive, but you can't really PLAY. Electronic plagiarism.

No one notices that you can't play because everyone sounds the same.

A useful adjunct to the "true" musician's tool kit but certainly not a replacement. Simply cannot stand alone

  • Why take the keyboard apart? That's unnecessary. Circut bending, that's an art.

  • Wuhuu

  • damn... hot stuff

  • Awesome!

  • How "useful"... nice way to make cheap music.

  • Whats the name of the software?

  • Ableton LIVE. REALLY powerfull live performance stuff.

  • Abelton Live

  • Learn to play samples on one octave of a keyboard is easier, why break the keyboard?

  • I agree.

  • i know a better way go and buy the actuall fing u fcking broke bitchest

  • Not everyone has money during a recession :S

you should be grateful you can afford one... If, that is the case.

  • LOL. That's awesome. REAL hacking. Watch and learn skiddies.

  • i know a faster way to make the same product: warm hummus

  • ds video teaches the importance of resourcefulness in such things to make profit from it.....

  • Nice work if you can get it. He is giving lessons on MTV and we are watching. In real life I would kill for a job like that. I hope he is getting enough money to live in NYC. If you are then more power to you. You can work on content later. Buch of haters.

  • You don't need to take the keys out!

  • I was going to say how completely unnecessary that is and that all he did was take off some keys thereby making the controller less useful. But then i realised...... everyone else has already pointed that out :) by the way... if you want to get an awesome permanent panning effect out of your speakers, all you have to do is cut the cord on one of them

  • Nice thanks

  • cool:)

  • Why not just not remove the keys from the controller, not glue crap to it and use it as it is?

At least it wouldn't look like something I took out of the trash.

  • You must be a nightmare to live next to in an apartment.

  • ugly sound

  • its funny how you used to have to learn to play instruments

  • awesome needed to see that I def wanna do that someday.

  • All he did was show you how to mess up a perfectly good controller.

He didn't do anything special with the software or hardware. He just removed keys, glued crap to them, and marked up the housing.

Stay away from my PCR-500 you butcher!

  • duno what yal are on about.. but i think its pretty cool..

  • lolz

  • sadly i think u r all bieng stupid picke for fuck sakes he just was showing that whats wth all the trash and cut the hair its 2008 wtf dude 20008 everybody got long hair u stfu lean how to to say b4 speaking

  • ????

  • What a load of crap.

Here's a mod for you, moldotit. Leave the keyboard intact, and sell it to raise some cash. Sell some other crap, i see your room is full of it. Then, go to the local barber shop and get that stupid head of yours put right. This is 2008 my friend.

  • omg this guy is a tard.

  • kinda interesting i saw one of these at the techshop its cool and all but its really limited.same old smaple.not like turntablism at all.the sample isnt manipulated enough

  • wow so making music these days consists of hitting buttons on a controller. God forbid we use... gasp......instruments!

  • what kind of software do i use if i'm usin windows???

  • so what

    you can by new one

  • this Guy's an oxymoron...lol pointless mod.

  • oxymoron is a figure of speech. or maybe a neuter. which is he? whaha.

  • you should do your show with someone who actually knows how to make music :)

  • Heyyyy

is there certain types of software you would need???? and if so could someone name them?

  • Less step one.

    More step three.

  • someone in the agency contact me, you know i'll be of help ; )

  • or maybe is some sort of MARKETING thing... I know about these things.

  • Great video. Also check out the new show called Brians Basement on You Tube. It's very different from what's out there. If you like it please subscribe.

  • I think he pulled an "andy kauffman"

  • I rarely ever give negative comments on any video, but I must say, that is a waste of a perfectly fine keyboard.

  • pretty gay

  • Why the "modification" doesnt the midicontroller

work with all the keys intact?

  • lol, thats what i was thinking. he took it apart and changed the key, so it can give teh allusion that he is ingenious or something

  • What happened to playing an actual instrument?

  • NOTHING, this is just a technique.

  • not very in depth, he didn't even mention that the software is ableton

  • that was fuckin sweet.

  • Everyones just flaming the shit out of this the fucking dude is just really into his technonerding shit. I think its pretty feckin sweet, and i must try this.

  • Who says being creative needs to make sense. Fuck it, its just stuff... twist that shit, break that shit, do whatever u want w it... or go suck the worlds contemporary electronic dick and be like everyone else. I suggest a pill bottle w some rocks, mic that shit, itll sound dope.

  • weird.

  • Hey you! No not the other person you! Mmmm Yeah you! Come watch my videos please. Thanks :O)

  • Interesting

  • congradulations, you broke your keyboard!

  • and what has he achieved by all this aside from mutilating a perfectly fine midi controller?

all he has done is REMOVED functionality. seeing that midi controllers are not particularly cheap, this seems kinda dumb...

well i guess it helps him pretend like he's creative or something... lol people might believe that he's really revolutionary when they see his hacked up keyboard.

  • You retard you didn't have to break the midi keyboard to get those shitty effects you fucking retard..

  • hey yall im a keyboard controllerist, i change the letters on my keyboard and then nannf lls ddid kmckc. lookk....clkkc.

    lflllllsdds

  • He bought a bunch of stuff and broke shit. Since when was that music?

  • why did you have to break the controller

  • Modifying the midi controller like that was pointless because the midi controller is already designed to do all of that.

The program that was used is Ableton Live.
