  • in 4:41 i think that the deformation element didnt absorbed impact energy, the spare wheel did.

  • safe for hippies

  • chinese car its better

    lol

  • drive this many years, no porlblems! best car....only 60 hp, but 118 km/h

  • "troia" alla tipa in bicicletta

  • "troia" alla tipa in bicicletetta

  • Smart cars still use some of this design philosophy. The idea is to "borrow" the crumple zone from the other car.

  • Interesting to see how people thought about safety 30 years ago. I'm sure it was a safe car back then, but just for the record, there's literally no deformation zone, which makes all the forces go straight to the passenger of the car. This will cause serious injuries inside the body, despite the shell being intact after the crash. The way of keeping the passenger safe changed over the years!

  • holy shit!

this a late 70's van and it's safer than most of today's chinese cars!

    lol

  • seat belt would be nice.

  • the clip at the end claiming 50km/h is untrue. the lack of frontal damage would create a 'bounce' effect, whereby the rear, if not all wheels would leave the ground as it bouces off the wall. very much like with a smart fourtwo, however the front end (vw) is metal and therefore will transferr the energy of the impact throughout the rest of the structure as metal tends to do, i.e. the roof and doors would 'ripple' at the very least

  • well i can safely say non of these crash tests were performaed at the regulation 50km/h, extremely sped up. simple engineering knowledge dictates that if something is built without crumple zones the cab with bear the full force of the accident. if these videos were shot at full speed you'd see the roof deform due to lack of crumple zones just as it does in the beetle and mk2 golf, id say at 0:28 was traveling at 30-40km/h

  • The germans know their shit...

  • 0:22 VW LT

  • Pois é, isso é somente para a Kombi européia. Dificilmente veremos uma Kombi brasileira ter reforço estrutural e coluna de direção retrátil.

  • t3 forever :D

  • Cmon people discuss the video, discuss the car but stop starting ridiculous flamewars, hate speeches and even more ridiculous nationalism and cold war debates. That has nothing to do with that video.

It is obvious that this is an old Volkswagen Advertising Video, so don't take everything for the truth... just enjoy the cool sound and the stunning video quality;). Rgds, G00g00l

  • Why do I see one vid of the vw T3 that shows it smoosh like an acordian, and then this one where the vw T3 holds up like a tank? Besides only taliban drive this shit anymore.

  • i finally got to ride in one of these vans in april.

  • At 50 kmh this is quite good is it not? Even today..? Those tests we see today is only 35 kmh i think? I`m getting one of these and doing a Impreza conversion:)

  • wow so glad i own one of these, i was told they were like tanks but i didnt quite realise expect this, however my side loading door doesnt open that well anyway, maybe after driving 50kmh into a wall i could get in

  • @Thepinup1 Probably the bearings of the side door. They rust and get stuck, then grind, then fall off. (mostly happens because of no lubrication because of no maintenance) Just remove the cover from the side door rail on the right side of the car and look under it. You should see the mechanism. You can use inlineskate bearings to replace them if you are broke like i am. If you use a lifting jack to support the door you can even do it alone. Works like a charm now. :) Happy driving!

  • you own one then you know is true, i own one !

  • you will still eat it!

  • You wouldn't be crushed at a crash flat on at 50 Kph. You'd be Snapped!! Your neck and organs wouldn't take it. And this is still slower than what the IIHS tests at anyways. ( I know it's an old vid I'm just sayin')

Good that VW is using Dodge vans now. They clearly and easily pass that crash test and have for years.

  • screw dodge

  • @whattheheck1000 Ahhh. A wordsmith.

The Dodge based VW van is a much better driving vehicle than the Eurovan. I've ridden in both. There is no comparison. Further to that, the Eurovan was LIGHTYEARS ahead of this thing in the video.

    Progress is cool.

  • @Miradart "Good that VW is using Dodge vans now. " LOL ... idiot, VW is as always using their own design. No one with a healthy mind would use ameriturd designs ... that's why Daimler-Benz dropped Chrysler like a hot potatoe.

  • @georgie2998 Frankly if you knew more about the problems, Daimler drove Chrysler into the ground by forcing suppliers to reduce prices at any cost, and were setting the whole project up to make Mercedes the money maker and Chrysler the money loser all along. "Merger of equals" was never really part of the equation.

    If only you knew.

  • @georgie2998 Just found out that you are in Germany. No wonder you think everything here is inferior. Ugh.

The Routan that VW sells here in NA is frankly a Dodge, and truth be known is pretty darned good! It is actually a way better vehicle than the Eurovan it replaced here.

As a 4.0L gas 6 cyl, it even gets better highway gas mileage than the smaller Touran (european 4 cyl) they sell here. As I have said, I've ridden in both. Don't knock it. It's a really nice ride

  • @Miradart They may be safer than the vw bus, but caravan's (any dodge really) have the worst engineering I have ever seen. I will give you many example's if you want. They make them almost impossible to work on.

  • @FordV8Guy Well engineered, and considerate to mechanics are 2 different things. LOL!!

In truth, nobody makes things easy to work on anymore. I don't care what manufacturer it's from. It's not the good old days for repair places.

If it's been produced in the last 20 years, they are all bad. And if there is a worn part that is easy to fix, it's ridiculously expensive. Nobody cares about the mechanic. It sucks, but it's true.

  • @Miradart No, even a BMW is easier to work on than a caravan. or most any dodge chrysler. More expensive part's, but not as hard to work on. Had a plymouth breeze, the bumper had to come off the change the battery. you open the hood and look for the battery, you'll be there all day. Cant even see the battery. To take the evap. core out of a caravan the whole dash has to come out, LOL as well as the freakin side mirror's on the outside of the freakin door's! Took 8 hours. Normally 2 tops.

  • @FordV8Guy Yeah, there's some stupid crap out there. There are a bunch of cars that even make you take the dash out, to change the heater fan! The FAN! I couldn't believe it! All those connections to undo, and then hook back up again. And they wouldn't think of making all the connections in a gang plug or two. It's just lame. For something that should be as easy to change as 1 connector and 5 screws, it's idiotic. Lots of cars are like that.

  • @Miradart Doesn't really make any sense to me. Working on a car is almost always hard, working on a chrysler is, well.. you know.

  • @FordV8Guy You're preaching to the choir on that, man. Dodge certainly has their issues, but all cars do. The last easy cars to work on were made back in the early to mid 80's. After that, everything seemed to be geared toward assembly line efficiency. The issue these days, is that there are less REAL mechanics out there. Someone that really understands the system on a given car and can find the wierd problem. Lots a R&R 'specialists' LOL!! Take care man, and watch those knuckles! :)

  • @Miradart I dunno nothin!

  • @Miradart It would be one thing if they never broke, but they're just regular as far as reliability goes.

  • @Miradart Hey, they are purdy and have a sweet ride though! and most of them even have more goodish, fast injuns..

  • @FordV8Guy .....Do you always lock your bathroom door or what???

  • Magic,Vw N.1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Ce modèle est costaud au moins !

  • 5:47 - I got there First!!! I WIN

  • lol @ 5:39

  • lol at 5:20 "...a demonstrate how save it is for people who wearing seatbelts..." The Seat flipped over like Domino stones and the dummies where kissing the floor! xD

  • 0:41 He's like "Fucking bitch." Lmfao

  • sitting in front, or on top of the front Axle ist alway fun in a Front-Crash...

your Feet are about to go bye bye... ;)

  • 0:41....

    Yeah... sure -.-'

  • you've never driven a classic vw have you?

  • Best driving experience in the world. So unlike anything in the world. Cheers to the VW Bus.

  • TO BE FAIR... This is a design that went on sale in 1979.. This car is as safe as ANY other car from that era. (If not better)

  • This freshened T3 went on sale in 1985, and was slightly safer than the 1979-1985 models.

  • Very true.

I thought they went on sale in 1979

  • The T3 itself did.

  • My dad used to have a one years ago.

    It was a camper van..

    I loved it.

  • @matsui2001 better to be truthful sir

  • 5:39 - 5:50 wtf!

  • safier than contemporary chinese SUV

  • This car is very hard on the beats. Does not seem very safe.

  • Ever thought about the truth of that orange t3 crash video?

  • @G00G00L Apart from the idiots who think the orange car was a chinese brand ... it was a "Doppelkabine", and it was still very old when tested. You can see even through the "rat style" paint the rust patches. If so, the safety was of course inflicted. You can compare it with the vid above. And most probably, the speed when crashing the orange one was higher. Due to missing marks on the paint, it seemed to be an unofficial "test".

  • @G00G00L that was a chinese knockoff of the t3, it was fully loaded, and driven at a much higher speed

  • jaffacake1578, you are retarded.

The van in that test was:

    1) rusty as hell.

    2) fully loaded with ballast to the tune of 3.5 tons.

The test wasn't even for the van, because there are no crash test dummies, or markers.

The test was to see if the wall of the crash test area was strong enough to survive 6 tons at 80 odd miles an hour. i.e. faster than anyone even drives a microbus.

This video is clearly not fake, it's a goddamn period film from the year the van was made.

  • @jaffacake1578 that VW is fake. they took out all the good parts and left it with just he framing and seats. and thats why it suks. chinese fail at safety.

  • @TheRunescapernerd yes, sorry i made that comment ages ago... i have now removed it due to realising

  • Are the seatbelts that effective if the dummies fly forward enough that they and the seats fall below the window?

  • well these days you could make one alot more safe... beter brakes, seat belts, ...oh and dont forget just drive safe.. people think they can do what ever they want on the road , because they drive safe cars

  • 0:39 LOL

  • when was this filmed??

  • According to part 1 of 3, they say these vans have been made for 37 years. Since the vans were introduced in 1950, the film is from around 1987.

  • What's with the little rockets taking off from the roof @ 5:20 and 5:39? Whatever it is, it appears to be happening slightly before impact.

  • Lol that guy was PISSED when the girl cut him off on the bike.

  • the dummies with no seat belt got powned!

  • good video, great upload thanks for sharing :)

  • Holy shit, the dummies with no seat belt got pwned!

  • This crash test results, are very different to the other crash test seen in Youtube, where a orange VW Van crashes into a wall, and the cabin dissappears. Perhaps in that crash test the car was going faster, or it had a heavy load.

  • 1 star my ass. This is a safe vehicle for the 80s.

  • 1 star when they re-tested a bunch of cars in the 90's.

  • Paulosoy, the orange one on youtube is a chinese knock off truck

  • built like tanks these vans, i had one and a guy in an xr3i drove into my osf corner and he needed a new front bumper, new radiator, new crossmember and a new bonnet.....i needed a new indicator lense, a new plastic end cap and a touch up pen!!

  • look at 05:40 ! LooL

  • Im not impressed.... thats like sitting inside a teel box faling from 500ft

  • very good

  • volkswagen very good

  • exellent for 1981, compare this to 2007/8 crash tests of chinese cars !

  • I think in an offset crash the T3 bus would completely collapse.

  • i dout some of the new vans could do much beter than the 13

  • Yeah as any other car from that age.

  • not bad!

  • cool video!

  • Finally a real test, and not the other one that everyone else thinks that is real!Great

  • It was safe for ~1981.

  • 31 mph is very fast for this car friend

  • I agree, those vans are not safe at all. This video gives false information. I don`t want to have a crash in one of these tin boxes.

  • Well. It´s a infomercial... what did you expect? :D

  • You've just been comment replied by someone who goes to bed at 5 am! I could imagine seeing this. A cold 1987 night, 5:13 am, on a channel I had been watching earlier but was now half asleep.

  • i will survive i hope

  • Cchances are good! ;) Good ride!
