@swordofisis You do know that Galileo was a devout Catholic and wanted to become a priest, but his father made him go to medical school? You can't just ignore basic facts just because it is convenient for you. Just because some of the officials in the Catholic church used religion to gain power for themselves does not mean that that is what Catholicism is all about. Just like how Catholics are not all pedophiles because officials in the Catholic church absolved priests who had molested children.

The fact that all the learning institutions were run by corrupt church officials does not change the fact that he WANTED to be a priest, but his dad wouldn't let him. And he was excommunicated because his ideas about what religion should be didn't involve rich Catholic officials having control over the information that was allowed to the public.

I am definitely not saying that this is what everybody should believe, but I am just pointing out how big of a role science plays in religion. @swordofisis That is entirely speculation. Yes, it is possible that he didnt believe in God, and that he only claimed to so that he would be accepted by society, but you have to admit it's unlikely. There is no proof to back that up. The only reason you say that is because he was a scientist, and you assume that people of faith dont believe in science. You could say that about anybody in history, but why Galileo? He never said anything implying that his faith was insincere, yet you assume it was
