@Rockmanisoff Damn right! That's why I've always loved this song, it's quite non impressive as song really quite simple melodically and harmonically, and there are countless songs from this era saying the same thing, BUT, he sings this shit like he's just heard the missles are coming and he's just waiting on the warheads to land, and he's thinking about how fucked humanity is and he's really like you know what fuck it! what's so great about us anyway.
Religion does not cause wars. Its the men who follow a religion that start wars. Each religion has rules such as " thou shall not kill" so you can't say religion starts wars. Its the flawed man that starts war, not God or Jesus or Allah or Vishnu and so on. If we all lived everyday by the rules in religon then there would be peace in this world, but this won't exist for man is not perfect.
@TigerBeat159 I agree that at the core the issue is man, not religion. But religion gives people justification to kill in a way most other institutions do not. It gives one actor absolute purpose of action on 'god's side' and another actor absolute fault by being 'against god.' those are powerful concepts that cannot be compared to other concepts institutions create. A world without religion won't be magically peaceful, but it might be more stable, as people would have to rationalize war
@TigerBeat159 and conflict beyond ancient scrolls. And then people might be less willing to go off and die. For instance, if all the fighting the middle east has seen over the centuries was done under the guise of 'this is an important area whoever controls it controls trade between east and west and becomes very powerful geopolitically.' that might result in less recruits than 'we must please god, and win our place in heaven, by taking the holy land back from the infidels and heretics.'
@Twistednerver Very true point. It's a damn shame how people use religion as an excuse or purpose for war. All religion promotes peace and yet we shrug that off. Maybe religion is flawed.... or maybe peace just won't work for us.
@caputo350 you see not that which you do not seek; or, you are a miserable excuse for a thinking individual. Which is it-- threatened by Love; or just miserable? Choose now. Just one. :)
I think many of you are applying "religion" to anything that represents faith. However-- atheism also requires faith.
A LOT OF IT; I'll choose to accept the Peace that Jesus offers, free of charge, with no requirement for me to do harm to anyone...even haters, scoffers or those whose beliefs dictate that I must perish at their hand.
It will take much more than the abandonment of world religion to avoid our own Armageddon. As soon as we learn that one man or woman should not be a threat or threatened by another, then we may avoid this day of destruction. Doing away with the paranoia that religion tends to instill in people may prove a better than eliminating religion as a whole...I am not religious at all, but think that those who are should be allowed to be faithful...as long as they do not mean to harm others...
People hear what they want to hear. Despite the fact that these lyrics speak of the hypocrisy of politics AND religion, obviously many people rewrite them in their own minds to fit their preconceived ideas and beliefs. I've studied religion and the bible extensively in my long life, and the conclusion I came to is that the majority of these religious comments are nothing but recycled gibberish. But that's just me.
Yeah right, HIS side. What kind of God wants his creations to kill each other? I gave up Christianity because of all the killing, but if a Muslim wants to kill someone, then bring it on camel jockey-I am in Texas come get me you suck!
RELIGION HAS FAR MORE TO DO WITH WAR THAN DOES FAITH.. I AM NOT RELIGIOUS; I HAVE ABSOLUTE AND UNWAVERING FAITH IN, AND LOVE FOR JESUS CHRIST. THAT IS WHY I AM ARELIGIOUS.. I AM A FOLLOWER OF JESUS.
And God so loved the world that he gave His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, that whosoever belives in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For faith is the thing hoped for and not seen, where for dispute not because ye see not, for ye shall recieve no witness until the trial of your faith. And when you are driven to your knees in dispair and desperation call upon HIm and ye shall receive the peace you seek..
I'm a Agnostic and i am a follower o0f what science can prove in science but for your info i think religion is one of the causes of war and hate... and many other people agree...
some founding fathers
and a lot of musicians including, The Beatles
I don't think someone who sings a song about war and hate is christian or anything else in that category.
poeple,i believe in God,but this song is not about God,but about our own human afairs, and about taking responsability for our actions.peace be with you,and may God bless.
Are we on the Eve of Destruction? Well, never before did the human race have the capacity to destroy the whole world with the push of a button until the last 50 years or so. Human nature hasn't changed & wars have continued ever bigger up to "World Wars". Unless human nature changes, we are probably on the Eve of Destruction. I think only God can change human nature... probably for good only on the Last Day.
@roampros are you judging maybe a bit more lovin what do you think .what is it that you believe [that you speak for god ]...love and respect to you my brother/sister..
religion =kaching kaching.the billions killed thru history for relligion people argue and kill over what brand god is .is god nike or adidas/ jew/ hindu /muslim/ christian /budhlist .none of these is god these are faiths .religion is the way to hell .god is love so love god not the house you believe god lives in .god bless us all
When this was recorded you could not vote until 21 years of age,but you could go to war at 18! FYI At the 911 memorial 10 yr. anniversary clergy, and prayer were prohibited by the mayor! So bury your dead, but " forget" to say grace was the new rule!! Barry rocks!!What a time traveler....
@kittywoman5309 I think you are getting the lyrics mixed up just a bit. "bury your dead, but don't leave a trace....Hate your next door neighbor, but DON'T forget to say grace" The song clearly talks about the hypocrisies that exists in society. Religion is definitely not exempt.
One need not be ashamed of their own faith and yet it is truthful to acknowledge that millions of people have been killed and tortured in the name of religion which is worth being ashamed. I do not believe that ANY diety in which we believe, be it Jesus, Mohammed, Yahweh, etc., wants us to kill and maim, and yet it has always gone on. And after treating fellow humans terribly - washing their hands, as it were - there is something within (not from without) that says it's okay to "say grace."
For anyone who really cares about peace, come out to the october 2011 rally in dc. it is the 10th anniversary of the beginning of the afghanistan war. It should be the biggest war rally of recent. It's time to end these pointless wars and save the countless lives.
I am quite troubled that my Faith in Jesus Christ, which is, as you said, a personal choice, causes you, an individual with an obvious disdain for that which is unseen, to feel threatened. Rest assured, my little frenemy...I have no desire to attack you; your ignorance has already shown you to be an unworthy opponent. Pity, my little troll...pity, I say.
Unlike most recording artists who perform on TV, he's not lip-synching.
Roampros and TigerBeat, please keep your nutty religious beliefs to yourselves. Religion is a personal matter, like your bowel habits and your love life. Lighten up, god damn it.
is it just me, or does the interpretative dance choro in the background seem a tad out of place....maybe just a different time i guess...or, they didnt realise how significant or relavant this sing was/would be 40-50 years later........
more than 40 years later, sadly, this son is just as relevant as it was then. It's hard for people who were not alive then to realize what a HUGE shock this was for parents who had lived through (and fought in) WW2 and Korea. For the producers to have had him on -- with that set -- was very risky. Advertisers were main-stream American. I take my hat off to the producers who put him on . An amazing powerful performance of a song that is just as powerful today.
I's scary how relevant the words still are: with very little changes, this is our world today. My generation thought we could change this, but here we are! Just reading all the comments you are all making to each other about religion show just the hate that leads to war.
This song is not about God. It deals with how Man has and continues to destroy the Human Race. At the time PF Sloan wrote this song, the Vietnam War was going on, and there are also references to that War in the lyrics.
@roampros Your faith is not irritating me. I respect it. I myself am a Catholic and I face people like this daily. I'm a believer not a hater, I am on your side.
@TigerBeat159 ...I am an Orthodox Christian. I am not ashamed of my Faith, but I question the integrity of those who choose to attack my Faith, because some idiot that does not represent me, or my God, blows up a building, burns a Koran, or shoots an abortionist. My Faith is mine, and your lack of faith is yours to own. You learn a little tidbit of all that there is to know, and you feel somehow entitled to be the arbiter of "common sense"? What gives you that right? Maybe I should ask "WHO?"
@roampros It is GOD who gives you the right and the ABILITY to be a cynic, trying to disprove that which remains NON-DISPROVABLE. When you achieve the ability to know ALL that there is to know, see and experience, in every dimension thus-far postulated or detected, and can report that there is no God, WITH ABSOLUTE & IRREFUTABLE PROOF, then I may choose to change my views. If MY Faith in God is that irritating to you, maybe you should walk away...
@roampros I don't care if you believe in God and I don't go around trying to convince theists that they are wrong but you can't prove or disprove the existence of God. You take it on faith. If you think you have reasonable arguments that there is a God, well don't labor under that illusion. You can't prove nor disprove the existence of God.
@roampros Fundie, there is no proof, either way, as to the existence of any god. As long as you keep that nonsense out of our laws, our government, and our schools I could not care less what you believe. When you start forcing religion bullshit into our laws then you must be stopped at any cost.
@roampros if you want to see how big Angels really are, click on jeff124127 below / the images are nebulas bigger than our solar sytem, and the images are formed..Angels have moved the matter & gases in the nebulas to form images. Those our the Heavens,& that's where Angels are.I'f you start feeling alone or have doubts just look to the heavens.Sometimes seeking God can be lonely, and I sometimes feel alone, but never give up.We are not alone,God loves us,& the way we live, says how much we love God.
You are obviously a skeptic, a scoffer and a Hater. What is it in the O.T. that you cannot understand? Maybe I can help you comprehend its concepts. You sound like a moral relativist to me…how’s that working for you??
Thanks...I hope I may have answered a question, or scratched your itch to mik and ridicule Have Great Day!
@roampros you've not proved a thing, only the same empty plates of logic that the religious have been spinning since those illiterate bronze age desert wanderers invented their limited world view & their tyrannical, petulant & petty "god". all this creation has done over the last 5000 years is take a pretty nice piece of desert and turn it into the worlds most hideous war zone. great, And even if there was any substantial proof for such a god? I'd still not follow it..it's horrific and juvenile
Can you understand? Maybe you have seen one too many Da Vinci Code epics? Evil was not created by God; it was a symptom that came out of pride, and the desire to be like God; evil is not a creation, it is the unfortunate, but inferior result of an action.
You are obviously a skeptic, a scoffer and a Hater. What is it in the O.T. that you cannot understand? Maybe I can help you comprehend its concepts. You sound like a moral relativist to me…how’s that working for you??
@roampros Can you understand of The Book of The Proverbs of Solomon where says that, "All things were created by Him, and the evil, to be reserved for the day of destruction."?
No belly buttons—they were NOT born, but CREATED. GOD had no need for a belly button.
You have to be kidding; have you read The O.T. in Hebrew? The image of GOD, while certainly made less vivid in English, is not a creation, but rather a depiction of a HUGE image, condensed to fit a mortal’s mind. Doesn’t God tell us that His ways are above our ways, and His thoughts above ours? (continued)
@roampros and had no sexual organs until they disobeyed God,why would someone try and suddenly hide from God and cover themselves up..God created sexual organs after they ate from the fruit..And that's why they suddenly knew they were naked & tred covering themselves..And that's the only way that makes sense...Think about it...And weird that aliens the greys come all the way to earth, just to show us they don't wear clothes..And have no sexual organs....
@gorgeoustxwoman click on my name below, and watch the vid.the photos of the nebulas R from hubble telescope..I made the video adding hubble photos..Those r the Heavens, & those images r formed moving the gases & matter in the nebulas..But humans can't comprhend life being big enough to do that..Angels live in the heavens & heaven..Yep we r not alone..Look at the photo that says hubble below it..Does that look like a person??? oh the gases & matter naturaly moved so it looks like that!!! Angels
If everything beautiful and complex must have been the result of an intelligence, then what about that intelligence itself?? I trust you see the infinite regress - unless you deny that the intelligence (god?) requires no explanation, and in that case, why exempt the complexly beautiful in this particular case?? Truth is, we'll never figure it out.
A great song but how typically self centered and hippy-dippy these 60s songs were. The world has always been on an "eve of destruction", but we Americans only think about it when it affects us personally.
This song is so true and as it was 45 years ago it still hits the nail on the head of what is going on in the middle east. The War on North Korea in 1952 and We the USA still have troops there on the border of East & West. for 59 years... Something wrong with this picture? Salute you Barry McGuire
If you ask me, this song is about the futility of war and how people will act as if they believe something and then act in the opposite manner, which shows what they really believe. It's also about the fact that if we don't give up the divisive crap we buy into whether it's a part of politics or religion, we're doomed to destroy each other and ourselves in the process. The only people who ever tried to change anything in a real way were ignored/marginalized or killed.
I like the video and the message but I think this video could have done without all the Hippies in the back making weird druggy movements that only make sense to people whose realities are augmented
Back in the 60's, we all were really worried about the state of the world. So Barry Sadlers song really resonated with us. But, as we have all seen, the state of America now, as in the conflicts in Iraq and Afganistan, still has serious problems regarding our wars.
What the mind -doped society of Ameri K a does not realize that we are at the threshold of sweeping change. Wake up and simply look at your Bill of Rights. Go through the list and see how many of those freedoms are under assault. Look around the globe and look and the social, environmental, financial chaos going on at this moment. Get your head out of your beer and your football game and get to taking action to preserve what we value most our birth right to be FREE~~~ It is called EMPOWERMENT!!!
This song isn't about the question of the existence of g/God, but rather the subjective way the belief is interpreted to one's own means. Song is as powerful today as it every was. Now stop fighting and play nice, and don't make me have to come back there!
@Jerrodswmhr you got that right man you just gotta look at some of the comments posted to see where said madness starts....anyways Barry Mc had an astounding voice ,,,hear it once never forget it...and this song recorded by many others is only done justice by 'the big mon'
@lesaber251 I recall watching this performance with my dad back in '65. Joking around, I said "What a pretty boy that guy is!" My dad said, "Pretty boy? He has a face like a stock saddle."
This appears to be Barry McGuire singing live to the prerecorded music on the record. The version of the record played on the show did not have the vocal track, allowing McGuire to sing live.
(#13) I'm now seeing the gift God gave me and am amazed at how much my soul loves this woman. Many negative characteristics of my personality and the wounds that caused them are being lifted from me.
This rather long dissertation is intended to say this: if you don't have a faith in God, I'm not going to try to change your mind, it is not my place to judge you in any way, but do not belittle my faith and those of others. We have made a choice and so have you. Let's respect each other.
I'm giving you a gift and you are thinking that you don't want it." I then let myself shed the past and fall deeply in love with this woman. She is a shining gem and a true gift from God. She endured my deep and increasing depression, which led to physical illness that resulted in having to leave my career 6 years short of my 30, and hopefully longer, goal. At 15 years of marriage I finally met a Christian PHd psychologist experienced in PTSD. She has provided solid treatment based on science.
(#11) unshakable. There isn't a person on this thread that can divert me from my belief in God. I'm not an expert and I have more questions than answers about God and the Bible. But my skepticism is gone. We can't fully understand God, but if you ask me, he exists. Seven years passed and I began to contemplate loving again, but did not want to after being injured so deeply by the last woman I loved. I was deep in the Sierra back country when I felt the presence behind me saying "don't you see..
I knew because I had been forced to study a book I thought was a bunch of crap. The event jolted me instantly, more than the sudden trauma I had witnessed 3 month prior. I felt a strong presence at the back of my left shoulder for a second or two. My crying stopped instantly from the jolt. It was late at night and my now empty house was dark. I went from room to room turning on lights and looking in the closets while saying "where did you go." Since then my faith has become rock solid and
(#9) saying "Abba! Father, All things are possible for Thee; remove this cup from me; yet not what I will, but what Thou wilt." Jesus was overwhelmed by the task ahead, one he had just shared with this disciples. He even said in verse 34: "My soul is deeply grieved to the point of death . . . " I was in the midst of a lose of control that was certainly headed to my suicide. When I read the verse (36) I knew that nothing in the Bible applied more t o my situation than that verse.
(#8) me anything that applies to my situation," "F you, cause I know there is nothing in this piece of s*it book that covers this one, you SOB." "Now is the time to show me what you can't, I'm going to put my finger down on a place in the Bible and it will come down on some hypocritical piece of bullsh*t babble and I can rest because I know you are a figment of hundreds of years of blind faith." My finger came down with the tip centered on Mark 14,. verse 36. Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemene
(#7) against the wall over and over. I had reluctantly studied the Bible for so many years that I knew, but did not believe it other than the instructions for treating others came from a good teacher. I then began to shout at God and flipping the pages and putting my hands over the text while looking up as far as my neck would allow. "F you God, you are a piece of sh*t, if you exist you were probably in on this as well" were some of the words I shouted in a stupor of anger and hurt. "Just show
committing evil, was a hypocritical believer in God, who called me "not enough of a Christian." I could not talk with my "Christian" friends about my experience and many avoided being close to me enough where I could. My reaction: to hell with God, all believers, and established religion. I often, while alone, shouted out "F you God." When I found that fateful correspondence I was totally overwhelmed and cried enough to begin choking on the mucous in my throat. I picked up a bible and threw it
(#5) injured me, someone who supposedly loved me and "the Lord." I decided if there was a God that my wife and my "friend" believed in, I was going to be VERY angry with him. I was cleaning out some paperwork in our office three months into my post traumatic stress disorder and found correspondence that suddenly increased the depth of the evil that I had witnessed. The "friend" and my "loving wife" had planned the event to injure me in a way that could not violate my soul greater. My wife, ...
(#4) Then two "Christians, " one my wife, intentionality visited me with an evil that instantly reached the core of my soul. The death of a small child was involved along with other events I cannot share. Other challenging and overwhelming events relative to my job then added to the trauma, which over about 3 months resulted in post traumatic stress disorder. Here was my wife, who nagged me for 11 years that I wasn't "Christian" enough, stating that she was, involved in an event that greatly...
(#3) The church provided my wife and I a ready made set of friends as we moved to one small town after another as I transferred around to diverse locales for my U.S. Forest Service career. My wife and some others in the church decided that my views were too liberal, especially in relation to environmental issues that I was dealing with on the job. I was pressured to be an evangelist for "the Lord." How could I be such with no faith? I just wanted the company of some very good people.
(#2) In 1972 I watched Barry with a great deal of skepticism. He presented a strong faith in God, while I was very much a "doubting Thomas." I sat t through Bible studies absorbing but not believing. I craved the wonderful companionship of Christians but really thought they were a bit whacked out, praying and singing to what I believed to be a collective, long term need to believe in something purely wonderful. I continued seeking the community of the church as I moved and worked in 4 states
(#1) I've enjoyed the posts here. A lively discussion of the existence of God and faith in him. I met Barry McGuire in 1972 when I assisted a Christian youth group that had arranged for McGuire to be the headliner act for a Christian folk concert on the campus of Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona. At the time I knew nothing else but what had been fed to me since I was a baby in a Lutheran Church. I continued activities with church groups when I left home to start college.
Lets put it this way, if you believe in god.. Your an idiot: Henceforth if you believe that it in no way exists, you too are an idiot. You simply cannot know, therefore: You sir are an idiot
amazing, thank you for allowing an open forum of thoughts.
I was at a concert in London Ontario, heard you there in the early eighties, Thank you for the great passion of life that you shared there as u do here in 1965. Blessings on this 25th day of our Calender of 2010. "AD" after (of Christ).
How can the world deny a Saviour when we live and breath by and in His calender.
@8Zeitgeist Hey,if God doesn't exist, maybe you can tell the Angels to quit using nebulas to form images, those R the heavens out there. And heaven & the heavens R exactly where Angels would be.. Those images in the video were made moving matter & gases to form the images..But since God doesn't exist, you better go talk to the hubble telescope people..Tell them those don't look like people..Maybe they will beleive U..Click on jeff124127 below..& we r not alone...Yep, Angels did those images Peace
I wonder if he was in fear about the world coming to an end. Maybe thats why he made this song, because there was so many drugs and apparently the world was supposed to end in the year 2000 (yeah right) I would make a song to relieve my worries as well. But I fell in love with this song the first time I heard it, I thinks it's better then todays music. Cause it isn't only wrapped up in drugs and girls being DTF.
@Suzywriter Well, the song was written 35 years ago. I guess it all depends on what your idea of how soon an "eve" is, if that makes sense. Yeah, we're on the brink of annihilation from any number of sources, but we have been for decades and will be for decades. Not saying we shouldn't believe it, just a theory on why no one does.
Now it's easy to belittle the fear of nuclear war from that era - since it didn't happen - but for each and every American who was scarred, wounded, or killed in or resulting from Vietnam... well... wasn't that - isn't that - "destruction?" Isn't every American killed, wounded, or scarred in or from this past decade's wars in Iraq and Afghanistan a bit of destruction?
Anyway... you don't have to be a radical Leftist... or Rightist... to believe America 2010 is in deep shit.
@kittywhiskerz, if you refer to roamproz I agree wholeheartedly. And to anyone else who writes his faith with a big first letter. Churches are a great forum to preaching, not YouTube.
@UkkoA I'm sorry, but I don't understand what roamproz are/is. This song is very prophetic & Barry McGuire was an amazing songwriter. I was only commenting on his attire. I assure you I meant no disrespect. Cheers
@UkkoA Actually, experience has shown us that YouTube IS a great forum for preaching. The problem is, there is a fine line between preaching and bitching.
As true today as ever. I think the fact that he sung it live is probably pretty rare for that time, 1965.

People hear what they want to hear. Despite the fact that these lyrics speak of the hypocrisy of politics AND religion, obviously many people rewrite them in their own minds to fit their preconceived ideas and beliefs.

When this was recorded you could not vote until 21 years of age,but you could go to war at 18! FYI At the 911 memorial 10 yr. anniversary clergy, and prayer were prohibited by the mayor! So bury your dead, but " forget" to say grace was the new rule!! Barry rocks!!What a time traveler....
kittywoman5309 4 months ago 2

It was placed on a "restricted list" by the BBC,

more than 40 years later, sadly, this son is just as relevant as it was then.

Maybe I should ask "WHO?"
roampros 9 months ago

(continued)

If everything beautiful and complex must have been the result of an intelligence, then what about that intelligence itself?? I trust you see the infinite regress - unless you deny that the intelligence (god?) requires no explanation, and in that case, why exempt the complexly beautiful in this particular case?? Truth is, we'll never figure it out.

sixtiesforever1966 11 months ago
If you ask me, this song is about the futility of war and how people will act as if they believe something and then act in the opposite manner, which shows what they really believe. It's also about the fact that if we don't give up the divisive crap we buy into whether it's a part of politics or religion, we're doomed to destroy each other and ourselves in the process. The only people who ever tried to change anything in a real way were ignored/marginalized or killed.

But I fell in love with this song the first time I heard it, I thinks it's better then todays music. Cause it isn't only wrapped up in drugs and girls being DTF.

@BamBabyBrenda He didn't write it, P.F. Sloan did. Thanks Wikipedia!

The truest part of the song is the line 'You don't believe we're on the eve of destruction'. The signs are all there, yet no one believes.
Suzywriter 1 year ago
@Suzywriter Well, the song was written 35 years ago. I guess it all depends on what your idea of how soon an "eve" is, if that makes sense. Yeah, we're on the brink of annihilation from any number of sources, but we have been for decades and will be for decades. Not saying we shouldn't believe it, just a theory on why no one does.

Exactly! PASSION!

UkkoA 1 year ago
@UkkoA I'm sorry, but I don't understand what roamproz are/is. This song is very prophetic & Barry McGuire was an amazing songwriter. I was only commenting on his attire. I assure you I meant no disrespect. Cheers

Except McGuire didn't write it. P.F. Sloan did. What a god-awful, preachy pop song.

@UkkoA Actually, experience has shown us that YouTube IS a great forum for preaching. The problem is, there is a fine line between preaching and bitching.
