I have a question, back to 80s 90s did anyonehave their equipment taken by the police, or other incidents of similar nature.. no one seems to know what really happened to the 'Phreaks' the telco fed us books on X25 then sent in the police here in newfoundland canada back in the 80s... did the police tell anyone else that they would get 'good jobs' by finding security faults in Systems... anyone else have any DMS100 telco Switch Stories... Call me 709-368-3266 ask for Kenny murraykj709@yahoo.ca
I don't get it- is this for real? Could this really run on a stock Vic 20 with 16K expansion and no further tricks? The Vic was character based, so I don't see how they could do that effect at 1:11 and even *less* the one at 1:35 without pre-rendering and storing in tons of emulated RAM...??????!!!
This is for real, the video is captured from my VIC-20 w. 16kb expansion running the demo.
Nothing is prerendered, everything is realtime.
As you say the VIC is character based, but it is possible to redirect the char-definitions from ROM to RAM, making it possible to draw just about anything.
@ShadowOfNoice Oh, yeah, I know you can redefine the characters, I just don't see how you could do the two mentioned effects in real time without pre-rendering, but 16K wouldn't be enough to store the whole demo in then(?), and you say it's not pre-rendered anyway.
@NotATube There were a lot of UNDOCUMENTED tricks you could do with the VIC. But, without the 'Super Expansion' cart which threw in a few convenient commands like DRAW, you had to do everything the hard way, including learning assembler, to really get the most out of it. (I used a FOR-NEXT loop to throw values into a POKE command and see what they did. Wish I could remember the one that fooled the unexpanded VIC into thinking it had 16k!

This is pretty remarkable. Had I not been told otherwise, I would have assumed this was a C64.

why couldn't this type of stuff have been done in the 80s when people actually used their Vic20s and faced ridicule.

I learned BASIC on a VIC 20 back in the day. This here demo is totally off the hook! Mind-blowing that you can make a VIC do this! Respect!

So nostalgic! Vic 20 was that
bridge between a console and
a user programmable computer.
