  • I miss when Letterman was more comedy. Elliott from President! I mean Marlon.

  • the reaction to the "nuts in a vice" comment- how OLD is this clip ??! :)

  • @metalucid Late 80's.

  • He sounds like Stewie from Family Guy haha

  • nothing like brando at all.

  • this sucks.

  • Chris Elliott mimics Jack Hanna as he brings out a "Rastafarian Snow Leopard" actually, a rabbit in swimming trunks. Anyone have this? Please upload very funny bit.

  • I love Eagle Heart!

  • what a homo.

  • "I'm a comedy porcupine."

  • 2:00 Isnt it gay? haha

  • idiot

  • "I'm a comedy PORCUPINE!"

  • I remember watching this episode in high school and would impersonate Elliot impersonating Brando at our lunch table. Never got near the laughs that Elliot did.

  • "Now I don't know what tree to show this to"

  • Chris Elliott as "Marlon Brando" was very funny. Sometimes he would mention the native guy and girl, Katinka and Jakunta, that lived with him on "the island". For those who think this wasn't an accurate Brando impression probably never heard or saw the eccentric Brando of later years.

  • Bullshit

  • it was a different time. literally. the time was different.

  • I wish the beginning of this was available, where he mistakes Sugar Ray Leonard for Cassius Clay and calls Dave's drummer "Gene Kruppa."

  • Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir were on this episode also and he also joked about them when he made the Cassius Clay joke. As best as I remember it, it went like this:

MARLON: Dave, well I must say that the green room tonight it is just a madhouse.

DAVE: Oh really? Why is that?

MARLON: Well in one ear I've got Cassius Clay mumbling about God knows what, and in the other I've got two old farts tuning their guitars!

  • Chris Elliot is a comic GENIUS! Love him back when Letterman was actually funny.

  • @larrybud

    hater

  • He sounds more like Regis.

  • is this woogy from There's something about mary? And it only sounds a bit like Marlon lol

  • stupid not like marlon ever

  • remember when it was broadcast. it was so brilliant and so over the top you were in tears.

  • My absolute favorite thing about these appearances is when he refers to the cameras at "trees."

  • @ljmorelli ya,lol what tree do i talk to...lmao

  • @ljmorelli The best is that he still says this whenever he comes back on Letterman.

  • the word testicles is blanked out...and the audience is shocked...

  • Actually, he used the word "nuts," and it wasn't edited out originally, I don't think.

  • You're right, it wasn't edited out. I used to have the original airing of this on videotape. But when it was rebroadcast, the word "nuts" was blanked out.

  • These old Letterman clips from when he was on NBC are funnier than the stuff he does on CBS now. The smaller more intimate studio audience suited him better or something. It's like listening to the Beatles versus their later solo work, which is not nearly as good.

  • thats not totally true, its just a different atmosphere that works better for 11:30, the problem is the writing isnt as good, and also john lennon had some great solo stuff, which was better than at least the early beatles stuff

  • LOL!

  • hahaha

  • get a life.

  • a great impression doesn't have to be dead on, his impression is probably the best impression ever said by many critics including roger ebert and frank rich, a great impression displays what everyone sees in the character.

    simply the best

  • 24 carat CRAP.

  • Comment removed

  • I believe Chris Elliott was channeling Marlon Brando from "Missouri Breaks" in these Letterman appearances. Being their fan number one I believe both to be geniuses.

  • clearly you dont get chris elliot so just dont watch him. its that simple

  • "...you're snoring keeps me awake at night! I got him with a jab - a zinger! I'm a comedy porcupine." Marlon's got hisself a real case of the wits there by cracky.

  • He sounds more like Regis Philbin. I'd much perfer the guy under the seats and The Fugitive Guy.

  • chris elliot sucks big time..

  • YOU suck.

  • @shoemanbundy Shoeman what an ass you are.

  • In some bizarre UNFAIR cosmic twist of comedy fate, Chris ended up well, no where, and Conan, that Beantown Nerd want-to-be-intellectual funny-man stands to inherit the late night show spot Dave should have gotten from Johnny. Where are your COMEDY GODS NOW???

  • what an awful impression, mines much better, lol

  • that was a shit impersonation and Brando's toe >>>> this mans existence

  • you fat fuckin loser

  • We want to see the BANANA DANCE !! Does anyone have this genius of comedy doing the Banana Dance ... (from the island) on Letterman (another genius of late night!).

  • ladies and gentlemen, Marlon Brando.

    u wish, letterman, u wish.

  • letterman sucks.

  • This was a mean-spirited impression much like Dana Carvey's of Johnny Carson on SNL. Comedians and tv/radio jockeys don't have the same reverence for Brando as fellow-actors and directors. This is because comedians and jockeys and the public in general have never climbed that mountain so they don't know how extremely difficult it is to breathe eternal life into something that is written on paper. Nobody ever did it better than Brando although Bette Davis was remarkable also.

  • letterman did this cuz brando took the piss out him in an interview with an Asian/Chinese interviewer (who was also a dick). Brando wins, but he does get it kind of right x

  • Brando did that interview with that Asian/ Chinese interviewer in 1989. I remember that well. Chris Elliot started doing these Brando skits in 1987. I know that because this aired in the middle of the Grateful Dead fall tour of 1987. You're right though about Elliot getting it kind of right. I always thought these were sort of funny. Chris Elliot has a strange sense of humor.

  • Wow so you remember these actually coming out, thats pretty cool. What was the general opinion of brando then when Chris was doing these, what did american think of him?

  • I can't speak for other people, mainly because I haven't spoken to many people. I always thought of him a bit eccentric. I knew he and his son Miko were friends with Michael Jackson. Miko was one of Michael's bodyguards. Great shows on Late Night. The earlier stuff was so funny. Dave & the writers did so much with the shows. Chris did a lot of skits. Check out the one parody of William Shatner's Rocketman and of course Shatner's original. That was so funny when Brando made the Letterman faces.

  • I'll have to check out some of those late night shows. I just saw one with Oliver Reed in where he's been a complete pain in the arse but it's really funny, dave looks a bit scared but keeps giving it him back which is great to watch. I love those Brando/letterman impressions too ha ha

  • I assume Brando is an iconic figure in the UK? Similar to the way we think of Olivier maybe, but different of course. I watched the Oliver Reed clip earlier today. I remember watching that one when it aired. I remember Dave referred to that interview a couple of times to Paul shortly after that episode and once not that long ago. That one was classic.

  • sounds a little like brando, he we couldn't understand what the hell he was saying then he would have been better.

  • CLASSIC! Chris is great!

  • Oh man, thanks for posting this. I remember seeing this on NBC era Dave and cracking up because it mirrored the current Brando meltdown

  • mischievoussy: you are totally right. even an obese insane brando is more charming and talented than this waste of space

  • Brando never went insane.

  • whos this idiot?

  • thats crap i look for a brando interview and this cunt turns up,what a dick that was crap

  • Worst impression of Brando I've ever seen.

  • Have a sense of humor, will ya? He nails Brando's personality -quirks and all.

  • crap!!!

  • sounds more regis,but it's Chris,so what the fuck.

  • I assumed his Brando came right after his Regis. Regis spot on except for the fact that he does a horrible Brando.

  • Brando was crazy and living on an island at this time. His 'handsome' days were well over and his mind was slipping. He fried eggs for Connie Chung in a rare interview around this time. He also kissed Larry King on the mouth. Let's have a banana dance for a great actor... Chris Elliot!

  • If living on a private island is "crazy" sign me up.

  • Well Chris does a fairly good job, but I kind of agree with you, Chris should be immitating Bugs Bunny instead

  • BANANAS?????

  • BANANAS?

  • yeah, he used to fuck with paul without fail. i loved it when "marlon" would call paul "little ringo"! howl!

  • he sounds more like regis philbin

  • Chris did a hilarious impersonation of Paul Shaffer one night, on the CBS show I believe. If anyone has it, it is great.

  • @54spiritedwill54 I used to have it on a video cassette. At one point Dave told Chris that his long blond hair made him look like Hulk Hogan and Chris burst out into his Paul Shaffer laugh:

"Ah - ah ha - you - you think I look like Hulk Hogan - ah ha ha..."

  • WOOOOOW this is OLD!

  • Sounds like Regis.

  • My first thought.

  • Nice! I bet Marlon would laugh at this.

  • During an interview with Connie Chung, Marlon was asked about what he thought of David Letterman. Marlon did NOT like Letterman at all, and I'm sure he did not appreciate being made a fool of on network television, especially since Marlon himself did not go on TV shows to show what he was really like. Elliot did a lot to define what people thought of Marlon Brando.

  • I agree. Most Brando impersonations honor him, and this one, besides the fact that 'Woogie' can't pull it off, is mean spirited at best. It doesn't seem to be in good fun at all. Whe he is ripping on the dog "Dutchy", it is in reference to Last Tango In Paris, when Brando improvised a story from his real life about his dog he had as a child, and I really don't think it is funny. Brando rocked on Connie Chung, when he looked just like Letterman making that face, ha ha ha! Ultimate payback!

  • what an ignorant twat.

  • He is not doing an "impression", dumbfuck. I would try to explain it to you, but clearly you are too stupid to understand what Elliot is doing.

  • He is not doing an "impression", dumbfuck. I would try to explain it to you, but clearly you are too stupid to understand what Elliot is doing.

  • if his not doing an impression of marlon, then go ahead and tell us what he is doing

  • C'mon, now, no call for that. Let's be civil.

  • he's not funny at all! I prefer the one and only Marlon

  • Watch other clips before your judge, this was not one of the better routines, he's actually brilliant and wrote with Conan O'Brien for David.

  • get out!

  • MB was pretty freaking weird.

  • In his NBC days Letterman had talented writers, Merrill Markoe ( Daves old girlfriend), Conan O'Brien and Chris Elliot. It was quirky humor and worked very well.

  • This is one of many things missing from the CBS Letterman show. One of many reasons why I don't watch the CBS Show.

  • There was another skit where Chris impersonated Marlon Brando singing and dancing to the song "banannas"...... that would be worth seeing again!

  • if anyone has a CHris Elliot doing FDR A One Man Show" please post it

  • I have the FDR one man show on a tape with his parody sitcom "Action Family" but it's on VHS and I don't have the capablity of transfering it to digital.

  • Do you have much of Chris on Letterman for trade, possibly?

  • Chris did a hilarious impersonation of Paul Shaffer one night, on the CBS show I believe. If anyone has it, it is great.

  • "I'm a comedy porcupine!" Yeah we need the banana dance.

  • where's the banana dance?

  • Man those were the days! Too funny! Do you have him doing the "Bananas" dance as Marlon?

  • Horrific

  • This is hacky.

  • For those of you who don't get it, this is a comic impression - not a literal one. It was even funnier when Elliot would come out prancing like a loon to the piano tinkling of the tune "The Alley Cat". Hysterical stuff :-)

  • I am currently watchin the TMC documentary on marlon brando. THEY just covered don juan demarco era marlon brando. Chris elliot's Marlon brando is dead on.

  • mcrick..ur sooo right..i was watching it as well.. cris elliott got it, down pact!!

  • pact?

  • its been 9 months..packed!! my bad!!

  • never seen any of Chris Elliott's Marlon Brando...so insane! seems like the audience is just bewildered too haha

  • Bananas!

  • no handshaking... damn you Elliot.

  • i remember watching this in high school ,chris elliot is highlarious

  • Elliot once hosted an episode of Friday Night Videos and did his bad Brando for the entire show - I'd love to see clips of that.

  • I once had that on video tape long ago. It was one of my favorite Chris Elliott performances.

  • fucking kills me lol..classic

  • LOL...its so stupid its funny

  • This is exactly like Marlon, rest his soul. Chris Elliot is a genius. He should be used in a remake of "On the Waterfront," or at least, "Superman."

  • I see why Letterman loves Regis--this sounds just like him!!!

  • Wait a second...that wasn't Marlon Brando?

    Now, someone play 'Alley Cat'.

  • Please post the Jerry Garcia & Bob Weir tune they played after this.

  • Wow, this is terrible. Apparently Chris Elliot paid no attention to Brando's mannerisms, tonality, or timing. If you can't do a proper impression, don't attempt it.

  • your an idiot!

  • Bananas!

  • what the f*ck, are you idiot f*ckers 10 years old? this is classic Letterman and Elliot if funny as f*ck in this. dumb ass's i swear. its just a silly imitation, chill the f*ck out. this is why i love and this is why i hate this site.

  • he's stupid and so is his shitty impression. Marlon's 10x The MAN this fucker is...

  • not as good as your impression of a meathead...you dont get it than move on ....marlon brando sucks..chris elliot

is 10x more entertaining..now get outa here

  • u suck dick

  • hey kireedam...it took you 4 months to come up with that reply...what? you just get out of jail or did you cash in enough pop bottles at your trailer park to finally afford an hour of internet time.......your kinda simple arent ya,your mother must be quite the performer ..she still working the same corner...ba ha ha,,i will cut you!,,

  • You're an idiot.

  • you talking to me you piece of shit! ill spit in your mothers face!

  • No you won't. Go to bed.

  • ba ha ha ha,,,now thats funny !TELL ME CHRIS ELLIOTS MARLON BRANDO ISNT HILARIOUS

  • Love it keep the vintage Elliott coming!

  • What a horrible impersination, he's a shit actor and is a disgrace to Brando.

  • who is that guy?

he doesn't look nor act like Brando!

  • what kind of a fuckin' shit is this?! Is that fuck just being a monkey and tryin' to emitate Marlon

Brando? You stupid degenerate prick! Who the fuck

is that horse manure smelling dirty ass bastard?!

  • I believe this IS the kind of a fuckin' shit wherein that fuck is just being a monkey and trying to emitate Marlon Brando.

degenerate pricks and horae manure smelling dirty ass bastards indeed!

  • Love the "what 'tree' should I point this at" Now if I can find Elliot's Morton Downey Jr I'll be in heaven!!

  • THANK YOU - I was just trying to tell somebody about this the other day!

  • Funniest thing Chris Elliot ever did or ever will do!

  • I guess you have not read his new book then.
