Chris Elliott mimics Jack Hanna as he brings out a "Rastafarian Snow Leopard" actually, a rabbit in swimming trunks. Anyone have this? Please upload very funny bit.
I remember watching this episode in high school and would impersonate Elliot impersonating Brando at our lunch table. Never got near the laughs that Elliot did.
Chris Elliott as "Marlon Brando" was very funny. Sometimes he would mention the native guy and girl, Katinka and Jakunta, that lived with him on "the island". For those who think this wasn't an accurate Brando impression probably never heard or saw the eccentric Brando of later years.
Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir were on this episode also and he also joked about them when he made the Cassius Clay joke. As best as I remember it, it went like this:
MARLON: Dave, well I must say that the green room tonight it is just a madhouse.
DAVE: Oh really? Why is that?
MARLON: Well in one ear I've got Cassius Clay mumbling about God knows what, and in the other I've got two old farts tuning their guitars!
You're right, it wasn't edited out. I used to have the original airing of this on videotape. But when it was rebroadcast, the word "nuts" was blanked out.
These old Letterman clips from when he was on NBC are funnier than the stuff he does on CBS now. The smaller more intimate studio audience suited him better or something. It's like listening to the Beatles versus their later solo work, which is not nearly as good.
thats not totally true, its just a different atmosphere that works better for 11:30, the problem is the writing isnt as good, and also john lennon had some great solo stuff, which was better than at least the early beatles stuff
a great impression doesn't have to be dead on, his impression is probably the best impression ever said by many critics including roger ebert and frank rich, a great impression displays what everyone sees in the character.
I believe Chris Elliott was channeling Marlon Brando from "Missouri Breaks" in these Letterman appearances. Being their fan number one I believe both to be geniuses.
"...you're snoring keeps me awake at night! I got him with a jab - a zinger! I'm a comedy porcupine." Marlon's got hisself a real case of the wits there by cracky.
In some bizarre UNFAIR cosmic twist of comedy fate, Chris ended up well, no where, and Conan, that Beantown Nerd want-to-be-intellectual funny-man stands to inherit the late night show spot Dave should have gotten from Johnny. Where are your COMEDY GODS NOW???
We want to see the BANANA DANCE !! Does anyone have this genius of comedy doing the Banana Dance ... (from the island) on Letterman (another genius of late night!).
This was a mean-spirited impression much like Dana Carvey's of Johnny Carson on SNL. Comedians and tv/radio jockeys don't have the same reverence for Brando as fellow-actors and directors. This is because comedians and jockeys and the public in general have never climbed that mountain so they don't know how extremely difficult it is to breathe eternal life into something that is written on paper. Nobody ever did it better than Brando although Bette Davis was remarkable also.
letterman did this cuz brando took the piss out him in an interview with an Asian/Chinese interviewer (who was also a dick). Brando wins, but he does get it kind of right x
Brando did that interview with that Asian/ Chinese interviewer in 1989. I remember that well. Chris Elliot started doing these Brando skits in 1987. I know that because this aired in the middle of the Grateful Dead fall tour of 1987. You're right though about Elliot getting it kind of right. I always thought these were sort of funny. Chris Elliot has a strange sense of humor.
Wow so you remember these actually coming out, thats pretty cool. What was the general opinion of brando then when Chris was doing these, what did american think of him?
I can't speak for other people, mainly because I haven't spoken to many people. I always thought of him a bit eccentric. I knew he and his son Miko were friends with Michael Jackson. Miko was one of Michael's bodyguards. Great shows on Late Night. The earlier stuff was so funny. Dave & the writers did so much with the shows. Chris did a lot of skits. Check out the one parody of William Shatner's Rocketman and of course Shatner's original. That was so funny when Brando made the Letterman faces.
I'll have to check out some of those late night shows. I just saw one with Oliver Reed in where he's been a complete pain in the arse but it's really funny, dave looks a bit scared but keeps giving it him back which is great to watch. I love those Brando/letterman impressions too ha ha
I assume Brando is an iconic figure in the UK? Similar to the way we think of Olivier maybe, but different of course. I watched the Oliver Reed clip earlier today. I remember watching that one when it aired. I remember Dave referred to that interview a couple of times to Paul shortly after that episode and once not that long ago. That one was classic.
Brando was crazy and living on an island at this time. His 'handsome' days were well over and his mind was slipping. He fried eggs for Connie Chung in a rare interview around this time. He also kissed Larry King on the mouth. Let's have a banana dance for a great actor... Chris Elliot!
@54spiritedwill54 I used to have it on a video cassette. At one point Dave told Chris that his long blond hair made him look like Hulk Hogan and Chris burst out into his Paul Shaffer laugh:
"Ah - ah ha - you - you think I look like Hulk Hogan - ah ha ha..."
During an interview with Connie Chung, Marlon was asked about what he thought of David Letterman. Marlon did NOT like Letterman at all, and I'm sure he did not appreciate being made a fool of on network television, especially since Marlon himself did not go on TV shows to show what he was really like. Elliot did a lot to define what people thought of Marlon Brando.
I agree. Most Brando impersonations honor him, and this one, besides the fact that 'Woogie' can't pull it off, is mean spirited at best. It doesn't seem to be in good fun at all. Whe he is ripping on the dog "Dutchy", it is in reference to Last Tango In Paris, when Brando improvised a story from his real life about his dog he had as a child, and I really don't think it is funny. Brando rocked on Connie Chung, when he looked just like Letterman making that face, ha ha ha! Ultimate payback!
