However, if there is reason to believe that a hostile person has information and could be broken down to give that info and in doing so would save countless lives....why not? But how do you know for sure that that person actually HAS the information you want? That person could actually know nothing and give you false information just so you could stop torturing him. In fact, once someone is tortured he could be made to say ANYTHING, especially falsehoods. That's how it was during the salem witch trials; no matter how proposterous the accusation, ppl would confess to being witches because they were tortured into doing so.

I agree. I should have said that the person is proven to know something first. Like maybe an obvious target who is been seen with a person of interest and we need the whereabouts of that person in order to save lives. Nothing to lose in that situation, IMO.

It starts by being active in local politics. Information and transparency will do a lot to put pressure on our representatives, thus shaping change in a positive way. Once that goes, it's game over. I may be too optimistic but I think the net is essential to help steer things into a better direction along with our incoming administration who is far from perfect but is really setting a new tone away from Bush and pals. Let's keep a tight leash on them and keep the pressure on.
