The whole concert was great but I especially loved her arrangement of Dizzy's "Tin Tin Deo" starting at 34:20. Great to hear her choice of tempo (speed/style) didn't fight against the very live accoustics of the room. Last time I posted a similar comment, it was marked as spam! I have no idea why. I am a fellow entertainer in the jazz trenches and I mean what I say about this stellar talent from the fatherland. Bravo Barbara!
This my second check on this site. All these great Classical pipe organists laying hot jazz on us. Barbaara knows how to USE those huge pipes just like she does her portable B3. And then there were and the great Black women church B3 artists who can roll in keys and augmentations I never of. Isn't she the Queen of the jazz Aeolian-Skinner wranglers. I'd like to hear her on the Riverside organ.
Man I'm lovin' this! Anyone that plays keyboards knows what a radical transition it is to play a B3 with almost instant response, and then switch to a large pipe organ where the delay on some of the pipes can be close to a half a second from the time you hit a key, until you actually hear the pipe speak. This is one versatile lady! She makes that big baby sit up and talk. Amazing performance. :))
I absolutely love this womans personality. Her playing is simply genius, awesome and her english is wonderful. I hope she plays in Jazzland here in vienna again soon. Barbara, you are wonderful. Thanks for uploading trinity.
I've loved her Hammond stuff for a while, now that I've heard this, I'm awestruck at her talent.. The last piece in particular is just beautiful! Bravo!
¡Bravo! Lo bien que se acopla el Jaz al Órgano de iglesia.
Mi producción musical para Órgano de iglesia se compone de 1320 Temas, todos ellos compuestos e interpretados por mi mismo y grabados en 110 CD`s.Un saludo desde España.
@diggarazer What you see is an impressive outer shell, similar to the one that was used for the organ in Disney's "Twenty-Thousand Leagues Under the Seas".
The way she's playing Ain't Misbehavin' sounds just like theatre organ without the trems on. Very nice, reminds me of Jimmy Paulin. I really want to hear her play that on a theatre pipe organ -- with the trems.
Barbara was amazing. It was a different context and timbres than a B-3, but it was still a pleasure to listen to. Not one of you naysayers can do any better.
Saw her life last week in Belgium Turnhout and this woman is a GIANT on any organ .. unbelievable what she can do with the instruments . Keep the music coming Barbara, I love your sound .
YEAH! Gotta love it! Her 'Ain't Misbehavein' fast forwards the Fats Waller classic into this century and it's well about time we heard someone 'cook' on an organ like this. For those that are dissenters: I think the only thing that may take away from the performance is the long reverb of Trinity Wall Street.
Hammond fans are hearing their music sung with a different voice, and this just takes some getting used to.
Come hear my "Smoke on the Water" video played on the Atlanta Fox Moller.
Not a waste of the instrument at all. It's good to have it played. Was this a free concert? Organist has nice control over the organ. Personal distaste for improv jazz limits my ability to enjoy this, but the wonder of the instrument shows through after 40:00. Barbara is an excellent performer, isn't she. Love to hear her settled down with a blues B3, a sax, and drummer.
Now having seen the video, the player was very competent. However her styling is 100% Hammond B-3 and only works with this one instrument. Problem when Hammond organist jump fence they tend to over play the Pipe and Theatre voiced organs. Had this been played on a Hammond B-3 with a couple of 147 Leslie cabinets, she would've set the place on fire. This Marshal & Ogletree organ with console from Rodgers isn't right for her style.
Hmmm, interesting concept and one I always wanted to see, but, I dunno. I can't help but think Bach was doing a little turning in his grave maybe. I can see already how popular this'll make me! :D
Its a God gifted talent!

Rare video you can hear her speak :-)

How do you get the video-length?

YouTube lifted their ten-minute limit back in 2004. Not many users know that.

man, there's always gotta be some dude named after the bible who's gotta be a stick in the mud at the party.
i'll never forget the time NewWorldTranslation666 complained there wasn't enough vodka in the punchbowl at my christmas party back in 2005. the nerve!

She's hot and great on the Hammond.
But that stunk.
Playing trumpet music on a guitar doesn't work either.

Barbara is a great Hammond player but on a (v) church organ it sounds not like Bach intended it at all.
Nice experiment, professionally performed but it is not an enhancement of Barbara and Bach.
My opinion: Barbara stay on the Hammond.
digiwillem 2 years ago
Gee, how DID Bach intend jazz and blues to sound? OH that's right, it hadn't been invented yet!
steamrocks 2 years ago
I'm amazed. That really did have a groove.
More classicaly trained musicians should learn about rhythm and the use of a metronome.
(Especially when playing classical music)
