  • Ari's lyrics on this are brilliant, comparing bohemian junkies with housewives on Valium and TV addictions, everybody renders themselves numb somehow

  • "New Age" was at least 10 years later....?! Take a rest. RIP Ari Up - Punk Goddess

  • @djbethell I am not aware that what I posited would deny your statement. The punk ethos differs to some extent in that it does not take expertise, or rather lack of same, as an inhibiting factor in the pursuit of creative endeavours. Though The Slits may not sound 'Punk' to some ears, their approach was very much in the punk spirit. Punk had it's roots, and also has borne fruit - the ethos lives today, and it a beautiful thing. Have a nice day.

  • Rest in peace, Ari.

  • @djbethell - The Slits are an embodiment of the Punk ethic, not 'sound' - there the expression of freedom, expression of individuality, rejection of acknowledged forms, of DiY culture that necessarily allows for vast difference of sounds. Anyone trying to sound 'Punk' is just conforming to a formalised ideal of Punk, which ain't very Punk... I think it was the same in NY at the time; how do you account for Patti Smith, Talking Heads, NY Dolls and Ramones otherwise?

  • @ollyhoney Music was always been about experimentation - long before and after Punk.

  • R.I.P. Ari...

  • love that bassline.

    rest in peace Ari

  • R.I.P. Ari, such an inspiration

  • R.I.P Ari

  • @jnkyrdd0g

Hi, was surfing and wanted to remind myself how good the slits are, saw your comment and was dismayed, when did this happen?

  • @jezkerr

It was announced on John Lydon's (Ari's stepfather) website on the 20th. It simply said she died from a "serious illness".

  • @roddy76to86 The serious illness was reported as cancer. Ari Up was so smart, exuberant and beautiful...

  • @jezkerr ari up died of cancer on the 20th :/

  • @FloydTh3Barb3r

Ghoulish people like you want to make me puke. The family announced that Ari died of "a serious illness". Where did this "cancer" come from ? And why not ask what type of cancer ? Did she have chemotherapy ? how long was she ill for ? Was she in pain ?

Can't you just respect the family's wishes and settle for "serious illness" ?

  • @roddy76to86 erm thanks for the compliment, wikipedia said, and i didnt want to find out, out of nosiness, but because i heard she recently died and i wanted to hear her music, which i am glad i have done cause they were obviously talented

  • @FloydTh3Barb3r

Sorry, I was rather over the top.

But this happens when every pop star dies, ghoulishness takes over. The worst example is Ian Curtis getting his headstone stolen. As for John Lennon, that was a complete nightmare. And all too many other examples.

  • @roddy76to86 i am all for the punk/alternative/grunge scene, but just because i have come across a piece of information doesnt mean i am the person whole stole kurt cobains ashes or stole ian curtis' headstone, but i appreciate that you apologised :)

  • @FloydTh3Barb3r

Somebody stole Kurt Cobains ashes ? I didn't know that.

  • @roddy76to86 well courtney claimed it last year, but apparently she said it for publicity, i dunno... she's mentally disturbed either way

  • @roddy76to86 Overly sensitive much? The Independent as well as other sources have said the same thing.

  • @flimfan666

    Yeah, yeah, yeah...

  • RIP Ari... you were an inspiration.

  • R.I.P ARI

  • R.I.P. Ari.... so many people love you and forever will.. THANK YOU!

  • RIP, Ari.

You were great and original in your day. Loved your music.

  • RIP

  • R.I.P Ari Up

  • Mighty Fine To Me

  • They were the true feminists.

  • the Slits changed everything!

  • one of the greatest bands of all time. Thanks for posting this!

  • Joe Strummer went out of with the drummer, cool

  • The Slits dub tunes are brilliant. They def hack the balls off of any of the shitty frat boy roots revivalist bands that infest the West Coast these days

  • @livershot Love Earthbeat and Earthdub. And of course The New Age Steppers.

  • This is great stuff! Takes me right back to college days!

  • Well this band are an acquired taste !

Have a scan through my other uploads and you should find something you like.

  • The are actually punk, they were on the go at the same time as the Sex Pistols. But their music was heavily influenced by Jamaican "dub", which is what makes them sound so unique.

  • @roddy76to86 I saw them support the clash on the White Riot tour in 77

  • @roddy76to86 Being at the same time as Punk doesn't make them Punk. They were something completely of their own making.

  • @roddy76to86 - i think they were post punk actually. there were a lot of band experimenting with sound around this time.

  • @used003 So much got quickly labled at this time as Punk or New Age. It made it easy for people to pigeon-hole. I remember the same happened for a lot of electronic bands being labled New Romantics when they weren't and didn't want to be seen that way

The mid 70s - mid 80's were a powerhouse of sounds and experimentation on full throttle; no limits! The labelling machine couldn't keep up with it, but it sadly tried.

  • @djbethell that was new wave not new age

  • @JohnnyLovely2 I was listening to the New Age Steppers when I wrote the comment, but thanks for pointing out the obvious.

  • never herd anything like this band incredible. ♥

  • This is know as originality, something non-existent in music now.

    This was recorded in 1979...

  • first i hearing this band i fucking love the shit out of it it rocked new fav girl band

  • the "cut" album is excellent. I have a live/ album which is good

  • Bluddy hell - I reckon Bjork must have been a fan of these!

  • Quite possibly !

  • @Mrsjessywessybessy So would Gwen Stefani and Lily Allen.

  • i love the high note she hits at the end of this song

  • So do I. I have often wondered how she managed this !

  • do upload few more tracks ,come on !

  • UMG have been getting really heavy with their copyright lately. If I try uploading more, they may remove what's already there. They're the Copyright Gestapo !

I've just looked, Amazon are selling "The Cut" for £6, and the mp3 download for £5, if your desperate for the rest of the album, "The Cut". Amazon are consistently cheaper than shops.

  • What the hell happened to their other music videos?!? And, YES, this is a fave of mine.

  • I'm not sure what you mean ? That I should upload the rest of their stuff ? If so, then I'm afraid that's just not the way I work, I upload things on impulse, just what I'm "into" at that moment. Agreed, not very systematic, but it does lead to variety. If you mean their visual material from the past, I entirely agree, the only half-decent "video" of them is "Typical Girls", and the rest is just bits and pieces.

  • I was just asking of anyone who may be in the know as to what happened to their other videos. They disappeared. It sure would be unusual if an enthusiast of a subject or topic didn't ask of the poster to post up this or that, speaking of myself, imposing upon another has never been my way. Nearly every type of visual recording is being posted up here on Youtube but why a few of the slits have disappeared is a mystery to me.

  • No problem, it's just I do occasionally get people asking WHERE'S THE REST OF THEIR ALBUM THEN...?!

As for the Slits, I own a CD of the Cut, but UMG group have claimed copyright on the two tracks I've posted ,which is unusual, but they've not actually stopped me. But they've reserved the right to insert advertisments, which as you can see they have done. I'm speculating here, but unless UMG are holding onto the visual material - some of it was pretty wild !

  • I don't mind it when people make a polite request though, which has happened, and sometimes I've been able and/or willing to oblige.

  • Cool, man. cool. Oh,seems I reached 1997 limits on favoring videos. idk that.

  • wow. Never heard of them before, found them by accident lol, they're really good

  • Yes, one of the most original bands from the punk era.

  • would you happen to know any other good songs from this group or from similar talented bands of this unique style?

  • I think you could say the Slits were a one off ! Their first album the "Cut" is nowadays considered a classic. There were some great punk era bands with girl singers, Siouxsie And The Banshees being the most famous ("The Scream", their first album is my favourite), X-Ray Spex, Penetration. And a bit later on, Altered Images, the Au Pairs, Girls At Our Best...and others ! Try my rather chaotic collection and favourites, and surf the "related videos" bit at the side.

    Happy hunting !

  • And how could I forget about Xmal Deutschland, brilliant (nearly) all girl German band from the early 80s !

  • Hey thanks. I really appreciate that. I'll look them up

  • I have been listening to the album "Cut" by The Slits. It actually sounds pretty good.

  • Well they were a very unusual band, even for punk. They just did their own thing and came out with their completely own musical style, with a bit of help from what they call "dub". But when they started, they didn't know how to play their instruments, and there's a famous episode of their first radio session (John Peel of course), and the technicians had to tune their instruments for them ! But "Cut" is now regarded as a classic.

  • They are a very unusual band and don't sound as punk as other bands, but some of their songs sound great and very original.

  • i aint ever heard anything like this before..

    i <3 it!

  • Everybody i know hates this band but i love em. The cut is one of my favourite albums. Cheers roddy!

  • Well it took me a little while to get into them, but now they are one of my favorite bands :)

  • I think that about sums this band up !

  • Yeah, more photos of them that I've never seen before!! : )

  • Just got another 5!

  • That'll do nicely !!

  • Very Curious!

  • Yes, a hugely original band ! They were on the go a with all the punk thing in the 70s.

  • This is the shit, thanks for posting it

  • My pleasure. It's the dog's bollocks, as we say in Scotland !
