So Portland is the friendliest city in the USA for cyclists? Portland? Davis is far more friendly than Portland. Why are the cycling painted strips "white"? They should be another color like "reflective orange " something the motorists can see and with a gritty surface for inclement weather.....hello you designers need to spend some time in Europe like a decade or too.................=) USA is so far behind
I use this quite a bit and it's quite nice, but Portland has lost it's rep of being bike friendly. I've had some close calls with drivers pushing us off the road and swear at us.
That is amazing. Portland seems to have good alternative ways of transportation, like bike signals and the street car. That is really important to encourage people to leave their cars at home (at least once in a while).
Damn I love my city and my state. Innovation is the key to survival. Every city should build its infrastructure to facilitate bike/public transportation travel.
Rex Burkholder lost his election bid in my opinion because he pandered to the urbanite vote and ignored the majority of metro voters. This may be more evidence that most Oregonians do not care for portland urbanites.
Rex might want to be more sensitive to equal rights. He appears to be promoting cyclists' rights and convenience over pedestrians. I walk often and I may have to file a descrimination suit against Rex and Metro for this.
How is this hight tech? Most all intersections have traffic detecting loops for cars. Is it really innovative to tune them for a bicycle? If a cave man copied the wheel in a smaller version is he now somehow high tech?
Is Rex saying cyclist are less intelligent than pedestrians? Pedestrians seem to do fine crossing an intersection of cross walks.
Is Rex simply pandering to a special interest group here in the form of cyclists? Pehapns he is a typical politician after all.
@BBdaWolfy I think what is more innovative than anything else here mate, is the way in which the bicycles cross the street, if you think about it it's quite alot quicker for the biker, and traffic as the cyclist will not have to cross twice to get the the oposing corner. I think innovative for the Detection loops is the wrong word, I think taking action and using them in a practical application is a great thing, just another step in promoting better traffic flow of all kinds. Cheers, IC.
I am moving to Porland because of the biking and eco friendliness, I have never seen anything like this auto bike signal. I live in south florida and well I am risking my life everyday venturing on my bike. I am so excited.

OMG i feel so much safer now, wow a button signal that replaces common sense, Luckily oregon is one of the only states where they actually need this since the people there lack common sense. Have you ever seen them drive, let alone ride a bike. Luckily We dont have that problem in CA so there prob not going to waste there time installing these. If your stupid enough not to pay attention, care for your own life and pretend that your a car when you ride your bike then you deserve to be run over.

Lame. Way lame.
This only promotes bad bike safety in traffic. Traffic signals should encourage cyclists to use proper lanes and sides of the road instead of just stopping traffic for them.
?? Every cyclist who is pictured in the video is wearing a helmet. You're not talking about the narrator, are you? That would be excessive, don't you think?
the intersection works well and more importantly its a statement that things can be done differently. new approaches are possible and its a positive testament to PDOT and the BTA that this was implemented.
I wish bicycles were accomodated so well everywhere. The cycle routes in my city seem to get cyclists out of the way so cars get priority and the cyclist has to wait longer or contend with cars illegally stopping on cycle lanes.
No kidding. I love it when some motorist shouts "get you stupid bike out of my way." I think to myself "stupid? Carbon fiber, air craft aluminum, titanium, and choromoly steel, assembled with love in America. Where is the stupid in my bike?"

Unnecessary. The only advantage is in places where car drivers have a bad record for colliding with cyclists.

It would be even more effective if the fellow in the video wore a helmet. He's a bad example to the rest of PDX, especially in his visible position.
bluehole 4 years ago
Bicycle helmets are a red herring, and have very little effect on your safety. Go read cyclehelmets dot org if you'd like to know more.
lsmike 4 years ago 4
really? I had a nasty accident a few months ago and smashed the side of my helmet in, glad I was wearing it then
mickythehippo 4 years ago
It depends on the helmet... I use a motorcycle helmet but Iam a roadie and doubt an ordinary bike helmet will give protection above 20kmh
