I agree with all of the posters here about this performance ... and WHY isn't it out on DVD yet?? I hope it's not because the "powers that be" deem the "classic" version of the opera as hopelessly out of date and lame (News Flash: most of us opera lovers prefer it this way). Besides, Shicoff and Troyanos will never grow old.
If this performance was made available, it would sell thousands of copies, I'm sure. Hello ... anyone at the MET listening out there?
Metropolitan opera March 2, 1988. He also did the radio brdcst a couple of weeks before of it in an equally great performance, same cast, this one was done live and Brdcst on PBS TV.
My tape is still good and i remember watching it in 1988 I had the flu and a fever and was sweating even more then he was but I was blown away by how good the entire production was. Seems like only a month ago and it was 21 years ago!
I love this performance and also taped it and have waited 18 years for a DVD of it. But in 2003 at Saltzburg, Shicoff did the best Hoffmann I've ever seen. It did't have an upbeat end like this one; the ending was terrifying and terrific. Never made the commercial DVDs but I have a copy from the TV airing. He's an addict in it and dies onstage most realistically.
Absolutely agree! I have the recording and broke into goosebumps from the fist second of watching! Shicoff is a very dramatic Hoffmann, and the rest of the cast is fantastic, all of which creates a gripping performance.
@vilabreze I will pay for a copy of this even if it's only a computer file and not a real DVD... I have a tape but it's going to fall apart any second and this production of this opera have been my favorite since I was literally six years old. Please please please?
@WolfofSega I just found this page on youtube. Is there a DVD of this production? I lost my tape years ago (it got taped over) and I'd love to own it again.
the met nyc 1988 it was on PBS and was terrific all of them but Neil was on fire, really great and he can act a great show with even the camera work being exceptional, I taped it on VHS at the time and it never has been replayed sad-- troyanous fine is gone now, Morris also was very good here.

I had forgotten was a tremendous voice Troyanos had. As far as Shicoff is concerned, I don't think any tenor could have sung this role better.

Wow! Thank you for introducing me to Shicoff. This is powerful. I have loved Troyanose for many years, but never saw this before. Terrific.
