  • at 6:17 i like how he gable grips the "small percentage of techniques" lol Even when he talks with his hands hes doing brazilan jiu jitsu.

  • The first time I saw this technique was when Royce Gracie was pinned to the ground by Dan Severn and suddenly the fight was stopped because Severn was tapping and I thought to myself, what just happened...

  • Excellent video, i just started and i've had trouble just understanding how I'm supposed to observe Jiu-Jitsu techniques. But now I think understand how to observe.

  • Once Helio was asked who his favorite nephew was, Ryron and Reylan were the only ones present, he looked at each of them a couple of times, smiled at us and pointed at Reylan, Ryron jumped up and chased him, and beat him up, end of story :)

  • @koolaidman417

You're an idiot if you think this technique is "EASY" to get out of. This is supposing you're opponent isn't a female that is 50lbs lighter than you.

  • This is easy to get out of

  • Triangle choke is a Japanese move. It was not created by the Gracies.

  • @ajahni The Gracies never claimed to invent the triangle or any other submission. They just have a particular way they like to do the triangle and they think it is effective in an actual street fight.

Also the triangle is also known in Catch Wresling as the figure-4 so it is not a move that is exclusive to just Japan.

  • this vid made me so horny i squirted dude nectar all over this laptop screen:)

  • the triangle choke came from japanese jiu jitsu, kano jj, and judo. but the gracies modified it.

  • Do they know that the triangle choke existed in judo before bjj? Because it doesn't sound like it.

  • Why do all their names start with R ?

  • @VitaNegern77 Carlos Gracie believed that the letters “R”, “K”, and “C” were “strong” letters, almost “magical.” Almost all of his 21 children (except for 3 daughters) names’ begin with those three letters. Many of his descendants continue the tradition.

Helio continued the tradition naming all 9 of his children with “R“ as the first letter. In fact, all of his grandchildren’s names, except for one begin with either “R” or “K.” Only Rorion’s daughter Segina's name doesn't start with "R" or "K."

  • i learned triangle choke but wasnt ever taught how to deal with opponents providing resistance. so it's a really good explanation and i am thoroughly appreciative of it.

  • i find in a lot of situations, my legs can't reach to each other to lock in the triangle. any tips?

  • @hermanator1989 when doing the triangle, put your hand on your ankle or shin and PULL IT DOWN. pull the ankle of the leg that is on top of your opponent's neck . pull it down towards towards the ground. after that, you can easily lock in the triangle. or just move to the side of your opponent and try the traingle there.

  • It didn't take long for me to realise that 6 people in the world are Judokas... however how anyone can dislike these guys is beyond me!

  • I love how the guy is explaining! He is really gifted to make you listen and remember!

  • thanks! I have been having trouble getting a full lock on my triangle chokes in judo and I had never thought to try this. I always tried to force them back and regrip, which usually resulted in them escaping the guard or standing back up, I will be sure to try this in my next randori.

  • THANK YOU!!! I have been having so much trouble rying to find someone who can actually show me an affevtive way to control the defender

  • BOMB *thumbs up*

  • hes so excited to narrate i love it lol

  • Guy has a good speaking voice.

  • hahaha won my 1st sparring yesterday using triangle.. hahahaha

  • Michini712 not everything on wickapeadia is true!

  • lol ... the gracies r soon gonna run out of names that starts with R due to their number !

  • judo is derivated from jiu jitsu so it s not a judo move and jiu jitsu is derivated from samurai fighting techniques and ....

  • This guy is getting too into it. Chill out you're just explaining a choke xD

  • awesome awesome video. thanks Gracies.

  • Rener looks a lot younger here.

  • what happens if your up against the cage and can walk out with your shoulders?

  • @stealth4343 you would have to push them away from you by using one of your knees on their hips to creat the space. with the other leg you would "bite" their neck and bring the leg you used to push, up and over your shin.

  • @stealth4343 Then you get your face destroyed, because your on your back against the cage, wich is one of the worst positions you can be in. You need to do your best to walk your back up the cage and get up.

Its almost hopeless if somebody has you against the cage when they are in your guard.

  • what happens if your up against the cage and can walk out with your shoulders?

  • no wonder i couldnt get that choke... good to know how to do it and counter it thxs

  • at 4:00, what do you do if you can't get the right arm over your opponent's neck. do you opt for a reverse triangle instead?

  • most in depth way to do this ive seen yet keep up the great work!

  • Rener has a unique gift of explaining the Jiu Jitsu techniques

  • a lot of times its hard to get one of your legs over their arm so you can pull the triangle off...anybody got any tips and tricks?

  • @ryujj143 simply dont keep going for it if its being difficult to do, there are other things you could try, and instead of trying to "make" something happen, instead of doing "this this that this and then apply the choke" use whatever is there. Let the opponent place themselves into position for an easier triangle. if you cant get that leg over but have the arm between your legs, drop trying to do that and go for an armbar.

  • mann... they should pput all the Gracie family (that does jiu jitsu) into a tournament within themselves and see which Gracie is the best. that would be cool

  • Y is he yelling lol

  • pretty funny! "whom are here to volontarily being choked out with this techique" ! :D

excuse me for the spelling ;P

  • lol awesome. He gets really exicited when they rotate, almost like its a read fight. I like the intensity :P

  • little dudes name is Halen? as in Van Halen? how cool is that! hahah Awsome video, wish I had a Gracie academy near me :(

  • @uohypnos

Actually, its "Reylan". All first "R's" in Portuguese sound like "H's". Rener, Ryron, Ralek, Reylan, Horian, Royler, etc. The grandmaster "Helio" was spelled with an "H" though. Pick up the "Combative" dvds and it will be just like you're at the academy, pretty much! =)

  • Thanks for the vid..It was very informative. Although, I train in MMA, I have learned a few things from this vid.

  • good stuff

  • don't forget that all their names starts with R's

  • He`s getting really excited at 3:00, like he´s utlizing the triangle himself at that very moment LoL

might not be the one with the best skills within the gracie family but in terms of language and integration he´s far beyond them other and will definately be more successfull from marketing point of view ;)

  • hahhahahhaha

  • make a gym in chicagoo!!!! plzzz

  • @devang88 There's an official Gracie school in Chicago. It's in Lincoln Square.

  • @typographik dude thanks! but thats kinda far from where i livee......... do u noe any other good mma or jiu jitsu gyms by chicago? maybi those gyms will b closerr

  • Thumbs up for chocking the little brother!!!

  • Both these dudes have some long legs, but they do both have some amazing skill

  • yeah this is bad ass. thats explained really well.... but how is that not allowed in sports?

  • wow this is explained really well. great teaching!

  • Great point that aint stupid what if someone bites your dick on the street. like i have never thought of that becouse i always wear a groin protector when I compete. Maybe going straight to an arm bar or oma palata from there but it takes like eight secounds so shit i dunno.

  • i thought the leg goes below the neck and the other leg goes above

  • this is cool n all, but like, im trying to think of how i can do it quick enough for the oppenent wont have enough time to respond.

  • this is too cool

  • What if the Opponent Bites your dick or your stomach?

  • That's not allowed in sports, and if it was a real fight ... let him bite, getting your tummy bitten won't kill you, but the triangle choke will kill the opponent.

  • when they stand up, transition to an armbar

  • Yes, standing up is a way to escape the triangle choke. But it's pretty hard to do in a full force sparring. When you are in the triangle, you can't see well, you will pass out in seconds, you're kind of balance because one of your arms are trapped.

Many times when the guy tries to stand up, he ends up falling and getting finished at the mount.Kind of a mounted triangle, which is way worse them the guard one, all his weight over you.

But a good fighter may be able to pull it out.

  • Great vid. perfect. but what happens if he stands up?

  • Try standing up when you have somebody's legs wrapped around your neck.

  • @Alio15 the only way I know of to get out of a triangle is to posture up and slip your head/arm out.

  • no there are many ways to escape a triangle... other than posturing. you can drive your shoulder to the mat, step around his head, stack him, pick him up etc... not saying it's easy, but there are ways if you work them quick enough

  • I can, but i generally tap out as I'm not fit at the moment.!

  • @CannedKoolaid you go for an armbar.

  • if ure doing it corectlyyou should be angled if you are u grab on to a leg and they cant stand. or u can sweep. or if they do suceed in standing up switch your hips and do a standing arm bar. trust me triangle=golden

  • Is it just me, or do the Gracies multiply like rabbits?

  • Hahahahahaha totally!

  • @Alio15 They steal the wives of their losing opponents.

  • @Alio15 Yeah, there are a lot of them :) And they all look alike so you think there are new ones but they aren't.

  • @Alio15 yeah seriously...why the fuck are there so many god damn GRACIES?

  • @Alio15 They do it on purpose to spread the jiu-jitsu. It's almost a religion with them.

  • @Alio15 i love rabbits!

  • @Alio15 they dont they just adopt tons of children...

  • @Alio15 lol pretty funny

  • @Alio15 those Gracie's are all over the place haha

  • @Alio15 your ratio of success to get laid with chicks if you're well-versed in the 34 important techniques of gracie bjj

  • @Alio15 did you see the missionary vagina choke?

  • @Alio15 brazilians...

  • @Alio15 haha!

  • @Alio15 and they're ALL brothers, too…

  • @Alio15 Gracies have quantity of quality. lol

  • @Alio15 their fav sexual position is the triangle :) (ok i realise that wasnt that funny.., and didnt make much sense lol but it seemed right at the time!) :)

  • You guys rule. Great attitude and lifestyle.

I take Gracie Jiu Jitsu and love it.

  • I remember sparring with him when he was a little kid,I remember tell him why are you going easy on me at the time I was 195LBS

  • Nice

  • thanx 4 the advice man... its greatly appreciated and I shall try this

  • is it me or does it seem like anytime brazilian people or anyone affiliated with the gracies put way too much emphasis on pulling the arm across..its not even an important component to finishing the triangle..anyone who disagrees watch ryan hall explain the triangle, he gives much more practical details on how to finish the triangle, nd pulling the arm across is not a main priority as alot of people make it seem

  • Correction, my friend!!! BJJ did not invent any of these techniques instead it copied everything from Jujutsu (which later became Judo) and packaged it as it were Gracie's invention. Wrong!!!

One of the things the Gracie family needs to obtain is humility which is part of any traditional martial art path...but I guess the Gracie's do not seek to enhance their lifes through the practice of Martial arts but their pockets....I repeat Gracie Jujutsu is nothing less than a plagiarism of Nihon JJ.

  • I would probably have thought something along the same lines as you, too. When I met the Gracie family in real life, they seemed like very chill, humble people.

Another time, when I didn't have a ride home from their studio, a few of the Gracie clan offered to drop me off at my house on their way to another place. Even then, they seemed like pretty down-to-earth people, although I could be wrong as they were speaking Portuguese the entire time =)

  • @antulio you are very very very wrong. gracie jiu-jitsu came from judo (because of the maeda connection) but was called jiu-jitsu for a variety of political and language-related reasons. you are however right in that the gracie family did not invent this technique; it came from judo in the early 1900s.

  • This technique was introduced to bjj RELATIVELY not long ago. It was in the 70´s after rolls gracie began training judo and discovered new moves he then incorporated into bjj. In fact the old gracie jj video that was recorded in the 60´s(which you can find here, in youtube) shows nothing similar to any triangle and that´s strange taking into account that helio and others were showing the most important techniques at the time.

  • I feel bad for the chocked guy, he had to smell testicles for 5 minuts long non-stop.

  • To clarify, I should say Gracie did not invent this technique.

  • No, they didn't "invent" many techniques at all, but they modified almost all of them for efficiency. They came from Japan in the early 1900s and Carlos learned them in their raw format. Helio modified them because he couldn't execute the techniques because of his frail physique.

  • The triangle choke is not a Gracie technique, it was around way before BJJ. It is called Sankaku-jime in Judo, from which BJJ is derived.

  • For real??

  • @Michini712 hoo gives a crap

  • @Michini712 yes! but i do belivie it came from the jiu jutsu before judo! Notice that i don't mean braziljan jiu jutsu! i mean Jiu jutsu!

  • @Michini712 STFU. U given teh secrets fool.

  • @Michini712 it was perfected by jiujitsu, both its application and setup were perfected by jiujitsu

  • @Michini712 Unlike common belief, BJJ originated in India, not Japan, so I don't see how it could have derived from Judo. Also, if BJJ indeed derived from Judo, there would be a substantial similarity between the two styles, which is not the case.

  • @ggevor1

no sir, Jujutsu evolved among samurai as a method for defeating an armed and armored opponent in which one uses no weapon. -Japan

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, which was derived from earlier versions of Kodokan judo. BJJ was formed after Mitsuyo Maeda brought judo to Brazil. The stand-up techniques in Gracie Jiu Jitsu are largely from Japanese Jujutsu (knife defence, gun defence, throws, etc.)

  • @Michini712 herosy

  • @Michini712 they use it in gracie jiujitsu however, that might be what he's talking about

  • @Michini712

    It doesnt matter.

GJJ/BJJ is an evolved form of judo so of course its a BJJ technique.

Its like saying a left straight punch isnt a JKD technique because it came from boxing.

  • @Michini712 Well said! Thank you.

  • Hey people ive just been wanting some friendly advice.Story is im a wrestler of 3 years and excelled at it. But coming in2 BJJ ive been tearin through people but been lackin technique. So whats some good advice on makin a succesful transfer from wrestling to BJJ? Cuz even tho I was awesome at wrestlinmg I know BJJ is a clear different art and any help, comments or suggestions to this matter would be much appreciated

  • Do both shoulder walk AND angle. Shoulder walk= easy lockup, Angle= Easy finish.

  • i actually got a flying triangle by accident when i got taken down by folding my right knee as i was falin, caching him in a half guard with my left, and then extendin my right leg infront of em which put it perfectly round his neck. effectivley makin me look alot better than i realy am at tapout matcches, hahaha

  • lmao nice.

  • i like pushing the outside arm to their chest and scooting that shin around thanks for the vid

  • i am going to learn this move in the next class in HoLLYWOOD

  • how hard am i suppose to squeeze my thighs together?

  • Not hard. I just tried it on someone, and almost no force was required.

The pushing up the hips/pulling down his head does 80% of the work

  • It's only gay if you make eye contact.

  • You are the levelsquee999?

  • I didnt say I wanted to kill someone, I was just wondering if you held this choke how long it would take to kills someone.

  • really nice video

  • how long does it take from someone to pass out in this choke, and then how long does it take for them to actually die?

  • With a solid triangle choke, things go dark after about two seconds, and its only a few seconds more before you are knocked out. The triangle choke doesn't just block your airway, it restricts blood flow from the carotid artery, which makes it very dangerous to hold if held for even a short time after the person passes out. Also, the more force you apply with the choke, the quicker it all happens because there is even less blood flow to the brain.

  • how long does it take to kill someone with this?

  • simmer down, creepy troll

  • Dude it's a simple question. I'm just wondering, it's not like I'm going to try and kill someone with it.

  • in the hands of an expert you can put someone unconsoncious in at the least 4 seconds if you held it any longer than after they are unconcious they will probably die because this choke blocks off circulation of blood to the head

  • the best way to get a triangle choke is with rubber guard. more specifically the meat hook which was created by eddie bravo who defeated royler gracie and could do it again easily to any gracie.

  • I, Wesley Heckendorn, enjoy Brazilian Jui-Jitsu.

  • I said it before and I'll say it again: I love the way this guy talks

4:44 "which in turn positions the bad guy much lower"

    haha, "bad guy" lolol

  • I tried this move on my friend and he got knock the FUCK OUT its in my vidss

  • I've had a hard time with rolling. the person im rolling with turns there head away from the biteing leg so the biteing leg is on the back of the neck instad of the side. and pooling down on the back of the neck they can still turn there chin away so how can i stop them from turning there chin sorry for the bad spelling.

  • make sure that u secure the arm and the biteing leg is tight against the neck...also after shoulder walking u can still twist to the side to get that angle

  • You are not Pulling there head in,You arent harnessing the 3 Points of pressure. Ask your instructor, because your doing it wrong.

  • I never knew you push up with the hips!. Use this next tim in class,I must have dozed off or some thing

  • i just started jiu jitsu and i wanna know on the triangle choke, does it matter where ur legs lock either on the opponents right or left side?

  • no it doesn't, but u have the change which hand u isolate for the chock.

  • It is a blood choke. The opponents arm that is stuck in the guard puts pressure on one carotid and your leg must put pressure on the other. Use the opposite leg of whatever arm you trap.

Train Hard or Not At All

  • whatever arm is inside the opposite leg goes on his neck. Remember good BJJ is always simple. Just remember you make a right triangle like geometry class and you want the right angle on his neck.

  • Excellent!

  • unfortunately the triangle doesnt work for all

my legs are too thick and short and my opponents are too big

  • i love how excited he got for like 15 seconds when he was explaining walking back on you r shoulders hah

  • what if the attacker bites you in the leg or in the balls? lol

  • 1. he can't because the arm will across the next

    2. You can put him out way before he even bites down if he decides to

  • he bites you and you put him out. who wins?

  • wouldnt Bite anyways

  • man, he walks you through the technique perfectly. sounds like hes been teaching it for 30 years

  • nice vidieo guys well explained

  • thats sick

triangle choke is my favorite submission,

    good job guys nice video

  • I really love his passion in explaining things. That was very clear and gave me a nice tip to use with my triangle choke

  • very well explained

  • Rener Gracie is may not be recognised as the most skillful of the gracie but I believe he is by far the most articulate speaker and may be the best up and coming teacher of the techniques

  • I never heard a BJJ technique explained so articulately. Flawless teacher; keep it up.

  • it was a judo technique before them and a japanese jujitsu one before that.

  • My all time favorite submission.

  • why does almost every gracie have a name that starts with an "R"?

  • its a tradition of the gracie family

but not all begins with r

    it begins with: R K C

  • ever thought about rotating and looking through the persons ear by wraping about the right leg for power?

  • I'm always interested in this stuff but aren't you risking killing someone? How do you know when you're just putting someone to sleep and when you're choking them to death?

  • Choking someone doesn't make them pass out from lack of oxygen, that can take minutes, it deprives the brain of blood. So when they go limp, you let go, the blood starts flowing again and they'll come too. The opponent would be much better suited to tap.

  • but the blood contains the oxygen

  • My point is it's much different than holding your breath. Many people can dive underwater and hold their breath for 5+ minutes. You can't get choked for 5 minutes and live.

  • true

  • choking results from lack of oxygen to the brain what do you think is carried by the blood, thats right genius, OXYGEN.I believe you are referring to the difference between choking and strangling.

  • I'm talking about the difference between holding your breath (oxygen) and choking someone (blood).

  • I'm usually successful going to triangle mount when they stack me by hooking his leg, but this is so much more efficient.

  • The Gracis are the toughest family on da planet!

  • we'll see about that *Cock gun*

  • omg i love jiu jistsu i just recently grappled with my friend who is a lot stronger than me and i chocked him out when he was in my guard. He was absoultly clueless.

  • It gets hard though my friends when your a big person against a big person seem even crossing my legs anymore is not the most easy thing. As I watched I will try the scoot or shimp out front a little more

  • I agree it's harder especially when you're a shorter person that's larger. Closed guard is even hard and sometimes impossible.
