Goju looks like a great art. Is there an age limit on when you can start? I've seen clips of masters practicing in their 70's but I assume they have been doing that for decades. Can a guy start this in his 40's, and if so will he have enough time to actually become proficient in it? Thanks.
I am a passionate goju man but if i am honest Sensei Taira,s Bunkai in this clip as with all of his other interpretations just look like a mish mash of arms flailing.....where anywhere does it resemble the kata...in this case Gekasai dai ichi
@7459ful, I am sorry that you can't 'see' the kata in there, but trust me, the drill not only follows the kata, but follows it in sequence from start to finish... The drill isn't supposed to 'resemble' the kata; the kata is a template for the combative practice. Actual physical confrontation doesn't resemble kata either, I'm afraid. The bunkai drills are a step between the template and 'free' combat... I'm happy to elaborate further if required...
@7459ful It's true, the bunkai is difficult to see (especially at this speed). It's the principles and concepts that make his approach unique. The majority of bunkai you see is in response to one set attack with the attacker then freezing in chamber, this has it's uses but it is wise to move on quickly. Taira's approach considers the response and then deals with it that's why you see a "mishmash". Check out this video to see moves broken down: Taira Bunkai 2011, New Jersey, USA

Taira Sensei always shows why, in Karate, the Kata is the focus. Great respect!

I'd be happy for the person who 'disliked' this clip to make a comment, rather than snipe anonymously...
