I think his advice about parents not pushing you mostly applies to artistic things, although there are exceptions. Art is not like medical school, or any other practical job that is all about knowing the rules; as long as you do as well as the guy next to you, you are doing a good job. However, for art, you need heart and individuality and persistence, as it is actually a very vulnerable job that needs fresh spirit and energy each day. If it starts becoming routine... it is not art anymore.
