It was dangerous because you had to drive pretty fast, usually 30+ MPH to get the tube in the air. At that speed and the height the tube could rise to hitting the water was causing injuries and some deaths. That is why they were recalled.

That's what happens when you let off like that when they first lift off the water. You're supposed to stay on the throttle when it lifts off. The faster you go, the more stability you have in the air. Once the person is up there about 30 feet you can just throw it in neutral and they will softly drop to the water. I did anyway...I got up over 40 feet for about five minutes at over 40 mph. Most fun I've ever had =) I wish I had it on video though.
@IrishChris1979 There are just so many variables with the Kite Tube, one reason it was so inconsistent. Wind was always a huge factor. I remember one time we went out and it was pure glass. We had the Malibu topped out and could only get the tube about 10 feet in the air, but the rider was able to slalom it back and forth and control the tube...it was pretty sweet.

You don't...they are illegal now because many drivers don't know how to drive with them correctly. Many deaths have happened from these because the driver has gotten spooked from the spotters and then they cut the throttle quickly, making the tube smash down in the water and hurting the tuber badly...and as I said before, sometimes to death.

You don't...they are illegal now because many drivers don't know how to drive with them correctly. Many deaths have happened from these because the driver has gotten spooked from the spotters and then they cut the throttle quickly, making the tube smash down in the water and hurting the tuber badly...and as I said before, sometimes to death.
