I agree. I think the movie was more able to illustrate how average the characters are. Mark is an average filmmaker. His movie was like three minutes long, and yet he was working on it the entire musical. Roger is an average songwriter. He takes an entire year to write one song. Maureen is an average performer/protester. That's harder to project in a Broadway musical since even if you're in character, you can't perform on Broadway like she did in the movie.
I love the point she makes in this song. Its incredible.....BEST way to start a protest. I love the point she makes and I love the details and I love her voice. She's not only hilarious but wise in this performance. GO IDINA!!!!
Yeah. It's more of a spoken performance. You could probably pull it off with no background music at all. If you had a pianist to accompany you, they could probably figure out the chords. Wouldn't be that hard to do. Good luck though with whatever you do!
I didnt realize that she says "I awoke singing..." when i saw the movie... the line wasnt said very clearly so it sounded like "we sprang to a gallop, leaping, on a mortgage, to pay a loan, saving" which totally made sence! (Dont hurt me!!!)
this song is my least favorite in RENT but i still kind of like it. i just don't get the lyrics though. i don't get where the cow thing comes from. at all.
their basically saying using an example and saying that she cant do what she wants (produce milk) then at the end she drinks the milk because they are rebelling against benny. sorri if that no sense lol
NO..its just the most different song in the entire musical... in rent we are used to slow songs, fast songs, love songs..but nothing like this..thats why your thinking that this is d worst
not really, i just don't particularly care for it; i think rent has so many better songs and this is just a little too "raw" or "sharp" for my taste. but that's just my opinion, don't let me stop anyone else from enjoying it.
It is necessary, even if it is different and a little hard to understand if you don't pay attention and also know the times the musical takes place in. Namely, NYC pre-Juliani and pre-Disneyfication. She's singing about how everything "real" meaning art and independent thinking is disappearing and Benny is an ass for not caring about the people he is trampling on with his CyberStudio idea.
performance is what Maureen does. it's her way of expressing herself like Roger has music and Mark has film ect. AND it starts the riot which Mark records that gets him on Buzzline which is an important part of the story for Mark's character. So no, it's not just an "extra song".
i know....it was just a saying... (within the musical) is just "a song" i KNOW the meaning, and what it means to the musical...and personally i LOVE this song.... BUT, as explained in the RENT book....by Jonathan... he underlines, the musicals extra song in the authors notes..so basically..i didnt say it, Jonathan did :D.... RENTHEAD 4LIFE!
HA! That just reminded me of today at school. Our buses are named after different objects and when the cow bus came every one started mooing! LOL! BTW IDINA ROCKS!!!!
I mean if you notice there's very little music in this song and she sings a lot of the lycers without aid from the orchestra
it's kind of an orgineal way of doing a song in a musical i think but it probaly didn't help Idina's vocie sense usualy singers/actors in musicals would have orchestras playing in the backround
i like how they do it though the only other musicals i've seen it in is Les Miserables and Notre dame de Paris where Characters
Idina smokes or did? Really? That surprises me a lot because I have seen a few things where she talks about a strict regimen she has for her voice....

My guess would be no. It's not even in the songbook.
