With the loving comments posted, I don't think some people realize not just the message in the words but how Luther & this song can reach your soul from just its pure beautyt. Richard Marx, the co-writer of this song also does a nice version.

The reason I don't think people realize how deeply this song effects anyone is because I was physically abused by my father(5 broken bones by the age of 6 & it just continued). Yet I find the tears welling up when I hear a soulful rendition of this song.

Tamyra Gray is my favorite contestant of her season. She should have made the top 3 instead of my all-time least favorite Nikki McKibbin. As of 2010, she is my no. 18 American Idol finalist ever. I am a big fan of Luther Vandross. I was 25 years old when he passed away. Back in the early 1980s, he started his career as a member of the band called Change. May he rest in peace.

I am a person who rarely cries but this song really gets to me. The lyrics are so beautiful and genuine. I am 18 years old and my father died when I was 3. This song reminds me of the person, relationship, and love that I missed out on. This song depresses me, but it also reminds me that I was lucky enough to have a father who cared about me and loved me unconditionally for 3 years, which is more than many people can say.
