This scene is brilliant. It is sufficiently surreal to be plausible as a dream, and its message captures the introspection that he must have experienced while in solitary confinement.
Sadly, this "wasted life" statement really speaks to a great number of idle people. Many alcoholics, the chronic welfare parasites, the educational dropouts, those who lack persistence, the "work-shy" lazy-asses, the driftless without goals, those who expect entitlements without self-sacrifice or without contributing to the maintenence of the safety net, and yes, the criminal element of society. Truly, a wasted life is a most apalling crime. This should be one of those timeless movie statements.
@mysongsend: There *ARE* people who *deserve* the remarks I stated. You may well feel that I was overly critical, but my ire is aimed at only a relatively small segment of the population whom for various reasons seem to revel in their ability to harm others, refuse to help themselves, parasite off of productive citizens and let irresponsibility and impulsiveness determine their pathway through life. It is certainly not my intent to target the handicapped or feeble-minded.
heavy i m fucking loving this movie you must watch it trust me its the best escape film ever big shot steve mcqueen you learn a valuble lesson in this movie
Friendo, I am with you, that is one of my most favorite script and most memorable movie quotes ever... I am still waiting for a movie with a cast and a soundtrack as powerful and as beautiful as Papillon. In fact, I think it was the best movie ever made. The new Soundtrack is out. It includes some additional great tracks (including this one "The Dream: that was not on the original album. I am ordering one... check out iTunes...
The music is Extraordinary, God bless Jerry for doing this. The Script and the feeling of the movie is really moving, impressing........ it's awesome :-)
I was 8 when I saw this movie for the first time. It is indeed one of the greatest advanture movies ever made. Long before The Shawshank Redemption, there was Papillon... Steve McQueen was "the essense of cool"; the best actor in his category ever.. Mel Gibson is the closest one today...
Mel Gibson similar to Steve McQueen?! You've got to be kidding! Steve was uber-cool: restrained, low-key, nonchallant. Gibson is just the opposite: lusty, maniacal, shouting, wild-eyed. I will say that they have one thing in common is that they are both regarded as totally macho -- but in such very different ways.
Maybe you're right but who would you pick as the next Steve mq? Or, will there ever be another one like him?... By the way, he never used a stunt in his movies.
1. He did use stuntman for the final motorcycle jump in "Great Escape" and for some of the driving in "Bullitt" -- not because he couldn't but because the insurance companies wouldn't let him. 2. Next Steve McQueen? Good question. Don't know.
Thanks for the info. Didn't he start his career as a stuntman? I don't think there will ever be another one like him... I agree Cresp, he is the best...
In answer to your earlier question, there actually is one actor who reminds me very much of Steve McQueen: David Caruso in the first season of NYPD Blue. Same low-key inner strength.
Please! Mel can't act his way out of a paper bag. His greatest performance was his phony apology. You have to get one of today's boring actors to keep his mouth shut before you can start making comparisons. Good luck!
one of the most underrated movies ever

That´s it. The message of this movie.
And the message of life. The worst crime
ever you can do is that you waste your life.
