There's a few of us who remember her on TV in the late 1960's,1970's and early 1980's. Why she stopped visiting the UK at a time when her voice was at its most beautiful is a mystery and a damned shame.

One of the highest selling recording artists of all time (without the help of the English speaking countries).

Decorated by France, Russia and Germany for services to her country, but as you say, virtually unknown here in the UK.

I loved listening to her in the late sixties even though everyone thought I was a bit bizarre. Most of my friends listened strictly to songs from the basic rock and roll bands like Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Canned Heart, Crosby, Still and Nash things like that. I Iliked that music too...but I LOVED listening to HER music, even though I couldn't understand one single word. I LOVED her spirit, her immense vocal quality...she swept me away. I speak no French so for 40+ years I thought the title of "Je ne suis rien sans toi" in English was "I'm Coming Home" since that was the English "translation" on the back of the '67 album. How that happened I don't have a clue but I know better now since I looked up a real translation after listening on Youtube. No matter. I'd still be enamored of that lady and her voice no matter what the title or words are. It is simply awe inspiring.

Thank you for your response. I looked her up in Google and I believe she is still singing. As for not having a personal life, perhaps she is private. My guess is that she lives to sing after having a difficult life before her debut as a singer. I can't blame her. After all she comes from a family of 14 children.

I saw that Tom Jones show too, I couldn't believe that huge voice was coming out of that cute, tiny little girl. I thought she would become a huge star but she never took off in the US. I guess she didn't fit into popular music's taste for crap. I just saw a video of her in Russia and she still has that huge voice and she looks great.

Agree - sad to admit, but the popular music taste in the US is pitiful to say the least. Enough to look at the 'music' scene right now. In order to gain fame no voice is necessary - enough to bare your flesh and sing and act lustfully with some sleasy lyrics. of course, people singing about pure feelings without disgusting physical innuendoes are not 'interesting' to them. Plus - most of the current 'stars' are the result of promotional activities of those who benefit from promoting them.
