Well, the dumb basket ball knows that Kermit is no ordinary frog.. That he's a green felt puppet. But of course neither the pink felt ball and the basketball are ordinary. And that felt balls can't bounce.
"Hi there,uh once again it is me the world's smartest frog to talk to you about another groovy word" lol,I love how Kermit tries to sound and act "cool" at the beginning of this sketch.
If I have any recall of this it's vague - and I'm a mid 70s kid.
Speaking of balls, that 'Mr. Basketball' is an anything Muppet also shown in a skit where Ernie plays a coach, involved in the choosing of baseball caps for his team - which just so happen to be those little pink ball guys.
This would be a swell upload, if anyone does indeed have it. Thank you!
This is fun; I remember it vaguely. If you have the old 70s Sesame Street "ROUND" segment with a montage of round things, that would be great to see, too!
The Packers were mentioned because this clip is from `69.. The Packers basically were the Champions for the entire decade. Bears indeed !!! Go COLTS !!
Wow.. I've never seen this one. And yeah I'm with you on the black background-- it looks really out of place. It was probably so that the muppeteers could wear black and operate the balls. (yeah I'm a genius, admit it!)
Kermit looks especially odd here. I never realized how different early Kermit was-- his eyes were more crossed and that right arm just NEVER MOVES. Thank goodness they fixed that in subsequent years.
Not that it really matters, but I wonder why The Green Bay Packers were mentioned instead of the NY Jets or Giants since SS has always come out of NY.
Now if SS was produced here in Chicago, the GB joke would of been more funny for obvious reasons.
I think "Green Bay Packers" just sounds funnier for some reason.
It's not the only time I've heard them mentioned in a funny non-sequitor. This little exchange in a student video I saw went like: "The relationship between footwear color and spleen color was first hypothesized in 1973 by the Green Bay Packers."
I recall one where Grover presents the letter "R." His final word was "Rocket" which caused the R to blast off. That was on a black background. "Doin' the Pigeon" was also done on a black background.
1:57 - 1:59 is a proud moment for us Cheeseheads-for anyone who would diss the Packers, try to see if your team was mentioned on Sesame Street!

GREAT classic muppets... in the days when muppets used "groovy" and other such cool words

Kermit certainly did a great job of explaining the word "ROUND" with the two talking balls.

Interesting things about this early version of Kermit: his skin has a brownish tint, he's got a potbelly, and he looks like he has a lazy eye.

he did look 'groovy' back then!

Anyone notice that whenever Kermit says "round" he kind of moves his head in a circle?

A form of subliminal messaging, albeit a very elemental form.

the ball sounds like bert

of course, good ol' Frank Oz did many voices, he rocked!
MeAndMyRC 4 years ago 2
Frank Oz could only do a few voices which is why the ball sounds like Bert (Fozzie's voice was also similar) and Yoda sounds like Grover.

"What's the matter? You'd rather hear 'Old McDonald Had a Farm?" LOL! That's the best part!!!

"My brother...was a big recording star...until a truck ran over him and squashed him out of shape."
Hmm, I guess that would have ruined his music career. He would have sounded a bit FLAT after that!
(Sorry, but you all knew SOMEONE wasn't going to be able to resist that one!)

One of Kermit's classic "demonstration" lectures! You gotta love the comic genius of Jim Henson and Frank Oz. They made a great team!

Yes, that was why the black background was used. This was the days before blue screen and computer animation and stuff.

LOL Groovy. The ball has Burt's voice.

I've almost never seen a BLACK background for the brick wall before. The only other time I can think of is when the Count counted flowers.
That first-season Kermit puppet needed some eye adjusting, methinks.
Even for first-year Sesame Street, this humor seemed unusually adult...
