Herz has truly made some great movies (check out Spalovač mrtvol/The Cremator, that is my personal favourite). And the music in this film - wonderful.
About the animal comments - this "animal slaughter" is unfortunatelly part of (not only) Czech culture. I don't understand why some of you find it that disturbing, animals have to be killed in order to be eaten - what's the problem then (it's not like we are shown the actual slaughter). I believe it's called 'pig-sticking' in English? Not sure..
@Sara915414 thank you! i don't understand people's discomfort; i dont like animal cruelty either, but our diets require lots of protein, and we're built for eating meats. unless these complaining people prefer our lovely slaughterhouse method to claim the film...
@ilovetopostcomments Right? :) It is of course a bit hypocratic. People eat meat on a daily basis and yet they complain when they see how the meal's done .)) This is typical especially for USA these days. In my eyes it's unfortunatelly the most hypocratic country of all...
@Sara915414 I agree with you. In the US, there are tons of people that complain about how the meat farms and factories are cruel to the animals but in reality we eat so much meat that ranches have to industrialize to keep up with the growing demands.
@TheAndreaStanley Sounds like you've spent too much time in a film critique or English class. That's just how people in villages in the old days lived. Next you'll say the beast having a bird face also represents the masks we wear in our societies and other typical "insightful" perspectives people take on films. Annoying! :P
I guess they got to feed the cast and filming it all being prepared would completely tie in with the times. Plus, I doubt there was as much controversy about that sort of thing in the 70s,
@PlusSizeAngel Hm, well they didn't really show any of the animals actually being killed, and besides, it sets up the movie very nicely by showing how people usually treat beasts.
I hope everyone here has watched the 1946 version by Jean Cocteau before seeing this one. It's good to have a point of comparison.

Perhaps by showing the villagers slaughtering and cutting up animals, it shows that they really are beasts themselves?

You're right about this being a more gloomy version. It looks like it was directed by either Tim Burton or Steven King.

Ah, Czech films, beautiful and bizarre, in their own way. Check out the Czech version of the poster for "Weekend at Bernies", it's hilarious.

Otherwise great beginning but... I know that killing and eating animals is way of life, but should it be shown in a movie?!
