A viola is lower pitched and slightly larger than a violin. A viola plays differently as well, generally just enough to make transitions between the two surprisingly difficult.

@Tansukanan the answer is: violas are better! JK! violas are larger than violins, so they have a darker, richer tones. They also have a different strings than violins, though there is A LOT of overlap (low to hi: [viola] CGDA vs GDAE [violin]). Violins are known for incredible, fancy, runs of piercing high notes. Violas cannot go as high without a bit more effort but they have a greater low note range than violins. In orchestras, violas often have parts that "glue" low and high voices together.
