  • Album sales declined for everyone around this time because of internet downloads. It's what hurts the bands today but that can't be controled. I do agree about 1984 and and the debut album, but as far as Hagar goes, they put out more music, had more hits, FUCK, Don't tell me, Pleasure Dome, OU812, 5150, summer nights, poundcake, best of both worlds, dreams, the dream is over, top of the world, can't stop lov'n you, 7th seal, not enough, feelin' and more were top 10 hits, DLR didn't have this.

  • god, the writing sucks bad here. First :30 is so embarrassing.

  • I hope Roth has changed - seems like he has. He was a fucking imbecile in terms of personality.

  • gene simmons looks like paulie shore

  • wow. what an egotistical prick. but, I have to say that when he was in van halen they made some pretty bitchin music.

  • video freezes at 4:25 -.-

  • 4:11 Henry Rollins looks like a thumb with shoulders.

  • Looks like Sammy did a good job taking his place.. lol they made more hits with sammy then they did with Dave.. Millions more sold, and dave got crazy from the heat!. lol

  • @ebayisajoke Sammy who? .-)

  • @ebayisajoke Not true: VH's album sales steadily declined with Hagar, their best selling albums remain the debut and 1984 - both selling over 10million in the US alone. Also `Jump' was easily their best selling single US Billboard no.1 for 5 weeks. Hagar was a competent but bland rock shouter and turned VH into a power-ballad band - like the male version of Heart.

  • @Danazawa I actually left songs out, so here goes, Love walks in, cabo wabo, why can't this be love, runaround, right now, all these songs were played over and over on radio, they were all number 1 hits at one time, some may have stayed on the charts longer then others, but with Hagar they had more hits.

  • SO WHEN IS GREEDY JEW BOY SIMMONS GONNA RELEASE THE HALEN DEMOS?

  • @storminator1969 You can listen to a lot lot of the demo songs here on youtube.

  • HAGAR SUCKS

  • Love how Ronnie Wood is high off his face at 6:00 mark...lol

  • dave made part what made van halen, dave fans are the real van halen fans, love what dave mustaine said about dave and eddie, I'am van halen freak who also listen to death and black metal \m/

  • I think personally that sammy hagar was better in van halen than dave. 5150 album was amazing. Dave was a self righteous asshole. His ego was way too big.

  • and a footnote fair warning was thier best album!

  • when dave left van halen became crew cut football jock rock! i was a fan since i was 8 when i first heard that damn beautiful first album in 79 and when dave left i left van halen too and alot of other hardcore fans and to say daves solo stuff was lame have u even heard eat em and smile? it deserves high reguard!! when dave left the fun did leave!

  • @mrkrinkle72 And "Just Like Paradise" is awesome cuz it sounds just like Classic Van Halen!!

  • DLR was and is such a fuckin douchebag that it was nice to see him do absolutely NOTHING without Alex, Michael, and Eddie

  • it's nice to see that Dave's got his ego in check !..LOL !! he's the fucking best , and every word of it's true..Sammy looks like Bozo the clown and never had the stage presence and charisma that Dave' had...

  • I can't believe how fucked Ronnie Wood is in this.

  • The narrator is kind of obnoxious,... " like it or not " they became popular... Why word it like that ?

  • @squidface100

A lot of people seem to be this way nowadays. I don't understand it either. People like that make the world a piece of shit.

  • 3:37 funny how all these famous people are giving their retrospective input of VH in the year 2000. after all, nov 1999 was when cherone was ousted out of the band, and from there the media and press pretty much calculated the band's history was complete, and there was no future left for them.

  • thanks for posting these vids up, brother. totally awesome

  • Fuckin Wood... He's off his tits!

  • 8:48 Oh yes there is, and his name is Sammy Hagar.

  • Unfortunately, the 90's rolled around. Dave lost his hair and his voice. He went from stadium tours to shit clubs on the chitlin circuit, making $10,000 per night. He never made more than that until Sammy rescued him for the one joint tour.

As Van Halen is finished, I expect Dave's "career" is behind him.

  • Sorry narrator person, I didn't have the VH logo scrawled on any book but I *did* have the Roger Dean 'YES' logo on my notebook and a hand-sewn Led Zeppelin back patch on my jean jacket... Some of us are just too cool for Dave's school. :p

  • 8.48 what a pretentious asshole Dave Lee Roth is by making such a remark, a band is just that... a band, no one is indispensible and Dave Lee Roth being the an arrogant fool that he is went a spoiled the band in the end.

  • Loved 8.15, great reaction from Eddie. DLR was a great singer and frontman until he dissappeared up his own ass. Sammy Hagar took VHF to a new higher level and that's not to say the DLR years were crap because they were definitive years that many bands copied. Sammy Hagar made some great material with the band but the return of DLR is embarrassing to say the least.

  • "Will anyone take my place in that band........no, but you're welcome to keep trying"

    -DLR

  • VAN HALEN SUCKS

  • @InfiniteRhombus What a statement ya nucklehead! .-)

  • @InfiniteRhombus not true at all what are u doing watching this then that doesnt make any sense

  • @liverpool1987nd sorry im into van HAGAR not van GAYLEN

  • @InfiniteRhombus hey iam not here to argue with you but dont you think with hagar there was far too many ballads

  • @liverpool1987nd im just joking van halen actually rules and hagar is a faggot.

  • David Lee Idiot, think he was either gay or bi-sexual and was limited in talent but over blessed with EGO! Sammy Hagar is and was a FAR better singer!

  • @HamstaJones dont think you could ever call dlr gay that guy is many things but gay he isnt and he was a very talented front man who added style and colour to van halen where as sammy yeah he was a good singer (but not better than dlr) and a decent guitarist but when he was around there where far too many ballads which is not what van halen was about having heard everything they have ever done

  • @liverpool1987nd dude, what did DLR do after he LEFT that band? Goofy pop ballads that lasted about a minute. Hagger is a ROCK man! get some info before posting dude, or I can send you Just a Gigilo ... haha

  • @HamstaJones yes iam aware of what he did post van halen so ive got all the info iam ever going to need thanks i dont mind hagar i like the fact he brought a good voice and he played guitar which give evh more freedom to be experimental with keyboards but to me the best van halen is with dlr and i have the albums 5150, ou812, F.U.C.K and balance with hagar and they are alright but they dont get the mix of hard rock and ballads right there are far to many ballads but i do respect ur opinion

  • @HamstaJones Goofy pop Ballads? are you deaf!?

the first 2 Roth solo LPs were Great! Stve Vai! & Billy sheehan ruled!

skyscraper in 88 was way better than ou812, how do i know when its love? thats Not a "Ballad"?

Yes 5150 was Great & so was F.u.c.k. people need to STOP aruing over who was better.

VH is finishing their new CD with Roth & im very excited about that & Hope it really ROCKS!

    but well wait & see.

  • @MetalHeart8787 The two Roth Lps you mention are great. But the crazy from the heat ep kinda sucks...you gotta admit.

  • fuck, try and find a vh1 documentary on rock n roll without henry rollins hes in every one.its like vh1 goes hey were making a rock doc, call up henry.and hes always down wtf

  • DAVID VAN HALEN

  • Comment removed

  • anddd it was goood hahaha...it was fucking phenomenal from then till now

  • Thank you for sharing this great footage,VAN HALEN KICKS ASS!!!!!!!

  • dave was the one that told ed they got to do top 40 hits too get gigs in the clubs

  • Jump was very gay...

  • @rocketssg LMAO. I kind of always thought that DLR acted gay anyways. His schtick, be-bop bullshit, and attitude made him a fucking douche. VH did some great stuff with DLR (my favorite is "Fair Warning") but I can imagine that putting up with that ego and the fact that he could never STFU probably got old in a hurry. I read that Ed wanted to leave VH around "Fair Warning" but Al talked him into staying.

  • @resqfireman Your right he was over the top...The ego got the best of him and he left. Some of their worse music done was on Diver Down ...According to Eddy way to many cover tunes and all Dave's idea.

It had some great tunes on it but it wasn't pure original EVH and DLR was dictating what they were going to play.

If you ask me it was the begining to the end 1984 & bye.

The absolute best music they did was on both Van Halen 2 and Fair Warning. Dave had limited control doing those.

  • Dave needs to get his ego deflated and fast.

  • Great Post

  • People need to stop saying shit like "Dave is awesome!" or "Sammy did hell of a better job than Roth", just shut up! Be happy we got to hear both, sure I love the Roth years more but it's their band and they can do whatever the hell they want, it all depends on the listener themselves, and be thankful things aren't as bad Guns N Roses

  • This is literally one of the most useless and pointless documentaries ever. All it does is repeat everything people already know about the band! If you want a good van halen documentary, look up 'van halen early days' on youtube. Only problem with that one is it only covers the beginning days and rise of the band.

  • The greatest measure of a legendary band is how much they influence other bands.......and Roth-era Van Halen literally influenced HUNDREDS of rock bands in the 80's and 90's......but not a single band has ever cited Van Hagar as an influence.......thats all that needs to be said.

  • NO,ITS WRONG!!!

ON Feb 10 1978 the first album came out!

  • what the hell is Chuck D doing here- theres NOTHING related to VH with that clown!

  • In my opinion, David Lee Roth, as cocky a SOB as he was, could back that shit up in every way. He was a very charasmatic, energetic, sexy front man and one of the top front men of any rock and roll band in the last 30 years. Van Halen peaked in the mid 80s to early 90s.....even after Dave left. Sammy Hagar was good for Van Halen as far as ballads go and a few other faster rock hits, but to me Diamond Dave was the best of any front man they ever had.

  • look at Gene Simmons hair on this video! this guy was going bald 10 years ago! You'd think a guy who's had as much plastic surgury as he has wouldnt be above getting a hair transplant.

  • Although I can proudly say that there were more than 20 people there that night. Actually they were lined up around the block to see us play. I think we set an attendance record that night as I recall.

  • So why couldn't Gene Simmons have been in the audience at The Starwood when I played there in 1981? Talk about 'luck o' the draw'...

  • Ron Wood is shitfaced at 6:00

  • @MsEUPHER no! not Ronnie! I dont think he touches the stuff ;)

  • I'm guessing the one person to give this the thumbs-down was Gary Cherone.

  • yeah LSD lead singers disease ..... that analogy, was used years ago by bobby blotzer to describe stephen pearcy (us in case someone trying to claim it for `emselves, know wit i mean ??) haha

  • Fuckin Henry Rollins! has to be in everything ! hahaha

  • i'll have a bottle of anything and a glazed donut to go.

  • Gene Simons had NOTHING to do with VH getting signed!! He tried getting them signed to his record label and they turned VH down, The only thing they got from Gene was a demo tape and the IT!! So Gene has to get over himself!!

  • i still love the music but I've been disenchanted with vanhalen for about 10 years. Eddie has really turned out to be a real douche nozzle.

  • @mindeloman Eddie's alcohol addiction ruined a lot within the band just like drugs/booze affected all the band members of Motley Crue (Vince is still drinking) and Warrant fired Jani Lane twice due to his alcohol addiction. Some people are late learners and some simply never learn.

  • They don't even mention Mike joining. Fuckin' stupid.

  • I was at there 1st concert tour with Black Sabbath in Philly in 1978, and have since been to over 6 more of their concerts, also Dave by himself Sammy by himself , they are awesome

  • ma gusta le documental es super.......

  • Comment removed

  • @kenroy916

    Mmm, not really.....

  • Ron Wood is D-R-U-N-K and so is EVH in the beginning of that interview. Wow, this guys were marinated, and I guess Ron Wood still is.

  • Chuck D has the best quote I'd say.

  • I thought they were both great singers but with roth I fell in love with every song with him

  • David Lee Roth was the driving force behind Van Halen.......he brought all the fun and swagger to VH........his charismatic leadership was pivotal in Halen's quick rise to the top of the rock heap.

  • Roth was a dork.

  • David Lee Roth HAS to be the biggest dork this world has ever seen ! ! !

Thank God they got a REAL singer after that geezer left.

    \m/

  • @robonez I agree, but I always get blasted by Roth fans on youtube. I still say Hagar is the better singer and I like many more of the Van Halen songs from the Hagar era vs. the Roth era myself. Also, without Michael Anthony, the band is not the Van Halen I once loved.

  • @robonez You better be kidding.

And even if you are... FUCK OFF AND DIE

  • @anthraxmikeydoolin

    LOL!!! Angry tough guy? :D

  • ok obviously this halenfanatic ain't really a "halen fanatic". face it dude your a DLR fan which is fine but to say that DLR wrote the songs......sorry dude but Eddie and Alex wrote everything. The only thing DLR wrote were the lyrics....both are difficult to do but Dave didn't write the "music".

  • if dave never started with van halen then he would never be heard of.....the band themselves would have made it though. van halen made david lee roth. it was the musicians who were talented.

  • Comment removed

  • I never liked sammy hagar....there songs started to go flat.

DLR's showmanship even in the studio versions of their songs, had so much energy.

  • Gene Simmons really needs to get with Eddie to discuss the possibility of releasing that demo session on cd. What a goldmine that would be.

  • dlr made vh!

  • Was that Ronnie Wood at the first MTV Video Awards? Of course, this was before MTV took a shit!

  • i dont think Van Halen knows what he wants...of course Roth wanted some recognition...yes Hagar is a kida one man show....but does Van Halen want a guy who pours out his soul onstage just to be dissed into the shadows of backstage at an awards cewremony....rvey BIG artist has gotta face it some time.........my lead man,the one bringin in the major bucks,,,,,,is gonna bail SOMETIME....be it due to fatigue, riches, boredom, ego,or better, personal stuff.;.........

  • LSD= Lead Singers Disease. But I like DLR, Sebastian Bach, & Axl Rose. But they are (were) better when they were in the bands that made them who they are. But that's my opinion.

  • fucking agree.

  • DLR kicks Rose and Bach's ass! They arent even comparable. Rose is a bitch, I never seen such an overrated, egotistical dick. And Bach is a goon, lol, he is funny though.

  • @BlistardPussy

    You forgot Don Dokken

  • @BlistardPussy Yep, & the same with Vince Neil. Vince would likely be singing in local bars/lounge's only if it weren't for Motley Crue. I like your analogy of LSD & lead singers disease. Their egos grow to mammoth sizes and they forget who or how they got famous to begin with.

  • @BlistardPussy i can see what your saying. My opinion is that DLR, Axl and Bach gelled with there bands and were so good in that enviroment that taking them away from that doesnt have half the appeal. Roth was a huge part of Van Halens early success. it still works today. Dave is a magician when hes onstage with Van Halen in a massive arena. when he is doing his solo shows he looks like a las vegas comedy act. some guys are made for there bands,

  • love this stuff!

  • He could jump high up in the air!

He could do all these weird little ballet-like moves!

He could shake his ass and shoulders, but unless other ass&shoulder-shakers like...say...Paul Stanley...Roth was a lousy singer from the start right up until present time!

But even as lame and as dorky as he was/is....

What the hell was he thinking doing that lame-ass beach boys-thang????

Man oh man, the lameness of it all...

  • one of my favourite bands.. great vid!

  • ego

  • wow; i never realized how big of a self-indulgent prick dlr was until i heard him say that

"im the front in van halen, always will be the front in van halen, and i am, in terms of even thinking that somebody else might actually be able to take the place there; well you're welcome to keep trying."

i never preferred one singer over the other; i like sammy as much as dave and vice versa, but dave just went down a peg or two for me.

  • he didn't say he was the front in van halen. he said he was the FUN in van halen. and thats kinda true, sammy wasn't as flamboiant as DLR. and the amount of sexuality went down. so van halen was a little more serious when sammy joined.

  • hmm i guess you're right, he did say fun lol

    my mistake.

  • David Lee is simply A SHOWMAN.... A CLOWN ... the band was at its best with A REAL MUSICIAN at front, Haggar was a MUSICIAN, not a CLOWN, people who defend Lee Roth only do it because they relate it to the images and the classic videos but take that out and the "MUSIC" was better with a real musician in the mic, Lee Roth is not even HALF the music talent Haggar was and you all know that!!

  • DAVE has way more style than Hagar, and is a natural born singer and rockstar with awesome voice, DAVE is Van Halen and always will be the NR 1, it's like AC/DC Brian Johnson is not bad but Bon Scott was about 100 times better.

  • Agree mate 100%

  • DLR is one of the most insufferable, obnoxious individuals ever known to rock music...and is the only guy with ego enough to front the world's greatest rock band. Dave rocks...

  • Oh. Didn't notice that. Thanks for the info!

  • "And, it was good." Can you not come up with anything better than that?

  • The entire opening, including the "and it was good," is a play on the Holy Bible.

  • @NSXGMS is evryone in your family a genius or just you?? Its been done over and over and over ,and it wasnt good.

  • @NSXGMS Genesis to be exact

  • @NSXGMS Which bible?

  • @RHMETAL its more like "And, it was amazing"

  • Diamond Dave may have been a cocky s.o.b, but he was right - they couldn't replace him. True, there's been many better singers in the rock world, but there has only been one Diamond Dave :)

  • excuse us..for the typo.

  • The brothers van Halen where born in Eurpe: in south of The Netherlands... as a matter of fact. Ed still speaks Dutch. He lift there until 6 years old.

  • in Nejimim or however u spell it

  • cant replace eddie. i dont think anyone should have been replaced

  • I second that. First four albums are thee shit!!!!!

  • as it turns out there was no replacing edward, how about it dave?
