whoa. I had no idea this movie was so beautifully animated. And I remember so many odd details from it when I was a kid, now that I watch this! This has motivated me to pick up the movie sometime so I can reacquaint myself with it. <3
I have to admit Sykes and his dog's deaths very pretty horrible coming back to it. Both the dogs got violently electrocuted to death on the subway tracks (You even see one of them get electrocuted by the tracks which is the worst part) And Sykes gets smashed to pieces by a train! I love this film but god that was a nasty way to go out.
Sykes rocks! i think he's an underrated villain for Disney just like Ratigan. He's a mobster type of person. I saw this movie 3 times back in 1988 when it came out at age 7 and had some merchandise including Happy Meal toys, then when i saw the theatrical re-issue in theaters at age 14 i noticed that Sykes looks like Clarence from Robocop. Who else thought the same thing?
Did you see this in theaters when you were a kid back in 88 and had some of the merchandise including the Mcdonalds stuff? i did when i was 7 3 times in theaters and had the merchandise especially the soundtrack. Too bad it never came out on video the next year or for 7 long years, i did saw the re-issue when i was 14 and bought it on video the first day after waiting, did replaced it with 2002's DVD like always on some tapes. Does Sykes look like Clarence from Robocop to you?
@Johnlindsey289 I was born in 1992 actually. I borrowed the video tape from my local library when I was like 7. I now own it on DVD. and yes Sykes does look like Clarence from Robocop. Did you know the guy who played Clarence also played Red from That 70's Show?
Did you see this in your country's cinema as a kid back in 89 when it hit your country in 89? it debuted here in the states and Canada in november/december 88. Do you think Sykes looks like Clarence Boddecker from Robocop?
I guess what meant to say was that it was a style that I preferred, and that there isn't as many animations that recycled as in some other Disney cartoons.
As for other great non-Disney animated films:
1. The Prince of Egypt
2. Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron
3. The Iron Giant
4. The Triplets of Belleville
5. Prince Vladimir
6. Persepolis
Disney just happened to dominate practically the entirety of the 20th Century.

In Sykes defense, those who procure money from a loan shark do have something coming to them.

Sykes is one badass! He doesn't mind hurting people when he doesn't get what he wants and he'll even kidnap little girls to get what he wants.

Of course, Kurtwood Smith but isn't that cool i saw this in theaters when it first debuted in 1988?

@Johnlindsey289 absolutely. Toy Story was the first movie I saw in theaters and i thought that was pretty cool.

This is one of the few Disney movie in which the animation is actually good.
RebellionLord 3 years ago
You're insane. Disney animation is always good. However, this is an under-appreciated Disney film, certainly.

I agree, I love Fagin (Dom Deluise), his voice over work as well as the animation / character design is perfect! So funny too! I love him :)

humor me though and give me the best animated movies that weren't created by Disney. We'll wait...

Good answer. :) Now if we could only get back to great animation these days.
