She found a way to fight one of her symptoms AND chose how her skin would look rather than leaving it up to the disease to destroy her appearance. If I had the disease, I would probably just get skin colored ink or no ink IF all that was needed was the skin to be pierced by the needles, but she chose something different. Think of it as a cartoon band-aid if you must.
